2014 Texans Talk Mock Draft SELECTION

With 203rd pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts select: Prince Shembo, ILB, 6031, 253, Notre Dame.

Good pick. I was eyeing him with 7.01. I really like him, and think he can provide solid LB depth (which the Texans dang sure could use), but more importantly I think he can be a solid STs contributor on day one while he works on getting his game to the NFL level.

That's a damn good pick. I had him marked off on my board or he would not have been there. I like his size and he is a solid athlete at this point in the draft . I hope Rick Smith doesn't draft while studying for a linear equations test these kinds of mistakes are unacceptable.

He wasn't going to make it to you. He was the top of my list for the 205th pick with the Jags.

Bastid.

You stole the Jaguar's pick.

Thanks. Pick made using the Jimmy Johnson draft philosophy of taking the more athletic players available late in the draft.

Oh...he would have made it. I would have made sure that Thomas Jefferson had something to say about that.

That's a $2 bill if what I said didn't make sense.

I'm traveling for work this week, so I might not be around for my last pick. I also don't have my board with me :(

Anyways, I'll check in periodically on my phone and try to send a list in when it gets closer to the browns next pick. Blake and steelb will need to update the results thread until Friday.

Will do just didn't want to overstep my bounds.

I will be out starting at noon for about 4 hrs.

The Jets probably wont be on the clock until then?

With 204th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers select:

Marcel Jensen - TE, Fresno St, 6-6 259

Marcel+Jensen+Fresno+State+v+Idaho+03FJIy37flwl.jpg

With the 205th pick, the Jaguars select:

Josh Huff - WR - Oregon - PAC 12

At this point, I'm no longer looking at needs. I'm just taking whoever's high on my board. However, the Jags need some WR depth and this guy could develop into something really good for them.

Top guy left on my board.

Top guy left on my board.

Yeah, I'm a little surprised he fell this far but this is a deep, deep WR draft.

Walter Football had him in the 2-4th round range, CBS Sports had him in the 3-4th round range, and NFL.Com had him somewhere in the 5th round.

Getting him this late in the 6th seems to be a good value pick.

The New England Patriots select...

Gator Hoskins - FB/TE - Marshall - Conference USA

940x.jpg

The Pats already addressed the TE position earlier by taking Crockett Gillmore in the 4th round. However they still need to address the H-Back/"move TE" position, which has not produced at all since the Aaron Hernandez incident.

Hoskins has a strong frame at 6'2, 244 lbs and ran a 4.73 at his Pro Day. He was used as both a TE and a WR at the Senior Bowl and played FB, TE, and WR at Marshall. He caught 25 TD's in his 2 years as a starting TE and led the nation in TD receptions by a TE this year after finishing 2nd in the country last year. The only player in Thundering Herd history to top Hoskins' 28.3% TD-catches ratio is Randy Moss (31.5%). I envision him as a starting FB and TE in the Pats spread offense and consider him a steal at this point in the draft.

steelb has back to back picks so I'm going to extend his deadline by an hour. If he hasn't picked by the time I'm done with dinner then I will proxy for him.

Proxy pick for steelbtexan.

With the 209th pick the New York Jets select...

Shamar Stephen - DE - UConn

With the 210th pick the New York Jets select...

Matt Patchan - OT - Boston College

The Ravens are done, seemingly.

1.17 - Eric Ebron, TE
2.16 - Jack Mewhort, OG
3.15 - Marcus Martin, C
3.35 - Jeremy Hill, RB
4.34 - Ahmad Dixon, SS
4.38 - Mike Davis, WR
5.35 - Nevin Lawson, CB
6.18 - Ed Stinson, DE

Not a bad haul, I think. The first four picks might be starters, Dixon should get a lot of snaps, Davis should work his way into a WR corps over time, Stinson should be rotational DE, and Lawson can provide depth at CB.

Sorry guys, I will be back in H-Town tomorrow evening. Vacation over

With the 210 pick in the TT mock draft the NY Jets select Matt Patchan OT Boston College.

One of the best OL in this draft. Long injury history. Stayed healthy last yr and helped pave the way for Andre Williams huge season.

OK, so I think SteelB is replacing Avery Williamson with Matt Patchan. I have no issue with this.

Good pick SteelB very good value this late.

With that said the Texans need some depth on our busted up OLine and I think this guy has not only the ability to supply that much needed depth, but maybe in 2 years can supplant and replace a couple guys. With pick #211 in the 2014 draft the Houston Texans select...

Kadeem (Not Kareem - Walter F) Edwards - OG - Tennessee State - Ohio Valley (FCS)

Right now I'm kind of fixated on this OurLads depth chart: http://www.ourlads.com/nfldepthcharts/depthchart/HOU

And I know this likely won't look this way after camp and am really hoping that QBerry can supplant Kupper, if he can't we are in as much trouble on that OLine as we were last year, and last year was bad...

With the 90th pick in the 2014 NFL draft the Indianapolis Colts select:

James Gayle, OLB, Va Tech; 6037, 259, 4.68, 26 reps, 37" vertical, Broad 10'2" = "73".

coon has been PM'd.

Proxy pick for bah007 via PM.

The Carolina Panthers select...

Lamin Barrow - OLB - LSU - SEC

These 2 picks were just kind of glossed over, but what do yall think of either of them in regards to a fit for the Texans?

Could one of them be the multi-tool guy that could possibly push Brooks Reed to ILB?

The Bengals select Tom Savage, QB, Pittsburgh.

It appears clear that Dalton, at best, will not prevent this team from getting to a Superbowl. But he needs an amazing supporting cast. The Bengals were targeting Murray earlier, but he was gone. So the BPA and other needs took over. Here seems like a good spot for Savage, who has the potential to be a great QB. He doesn't have to be thrown into the fire and can spend a year developing.

steelbtexan PM'ed me a list for this next pick, but all the players on it have already been selected. Since that is the case I revert back to my previous proxy pick.

With the 213th pick the New York Jets select...

Avery Williamson - ILB - Kentucky - SEC

39 (215) Pittsburgh Steelers (Rock N Randy) ON THE CLOCK: 10:15am - 2:15pm
1 ( 216 ) Houston Texans ( TexansFTW )
2 ( 217 ) Washington Redskins ( kiwitexansfan )
3 ( 218 ) Cleveland Browns ( Dutchrudder )
4 ( 219 ) Oakland Raiders ( Rock N Randy )
5 ( 220 ) Atlanta Falcons ( JCTexan )

Been waiting 2 Days -_-

Pittsburgh Selects .... Logan Thomas, QB, Virgina Tech Thomas is very Raw and very inconsistent but his measurables and size at the position are a rarity

He is bigger then Big Ben and has a lot of similarities in his game

He needs multiple years in a nurturing system to grow and possibly reach his full potential

He needs lots of work on mechanics and progressions

He is a big dude with a cannon arm that needs lots of coaching and time but with the steelers he will have both of those things and Big Ben as a knowledgable veteran who is one of the best in the game to learn from.

1 ( 216 ) Houston Texans ( TexansFTW ) ON THE CLOCK: 10:30am - 2:30pm
2 ( 217 ) Washington Redskins ( kiwitexansfan )
3 ( 218 ) Cleveland Browns ( Dutchrudder )
4 ( 219 ) Oakland Raiders ( Rock N Randy )
5 ( 220 ) Atlanta Falcons ( JCTexan )

So late in the draft I'm a firm believer that most of these guys won't do much besides STs. Sometimes you can find that day 1 contributor but more often than not, you won't.

With that said I want a Strong and fast guy with decent size that can tear down the field and deliver a hard pop to anyone not fair catching that football. With the 216th pick in the 2014 NFL draft the Houston Texans select...

Storm Johnson - RB - UCF - AAC

Now after it sounds like I am dogging Storm, let it be down that I am actually a true believer in this guy's game. I think he can play football in the NFL. I think he can be the guy that spells Arian Foster and gives him much needed rest while being effective on the football field.

I've watched this guys game over the years and rarely did I find myself finding fault. Did I mention, this guy has the coolest name remaining in the NFL draft pool? Get ready Houston.... a Storm is coming...

Side bar... anyone have any opinions on the question I asked about 6 posts up about the OLBs?

Good pick at this round.

I would like Lamin Barrow in the 4th for the Texans. I think this is a fairly weak class for inside line backers and Barrow strikes me as more of a run thumper than anything else, but he could develop into a nice #2 next to Cushing.

I haz a sad :(

Wanted to take him to pair with Bortles and Carlos Hyde. Together, Hyde and Johnson would have been Thunder and Lightning! It would have been perfect! But you had to ruin it. Dick.

Anyways, this is a good spot for him, and great value.

First off, the Kadeem Edwards and Storm Johnson picks are both excellent picks so late in the draft. I have Edward graded 4th-5th round so that was excellent value. I also like double dipping at RB because we really need help there.

As for your question, Gayle would play OLB for us and Barrow would play ILB. Barrow is a classic WILB except that he needs to get better in coverage. Put him next to Cushing and let him clean up what Cush doesn't. Gayle's skill set is more suited to WOLB because of his pass rush ability, but he has the athleticism required to play SOLB and cover TE's.

Excellent pick. I think OB is going to look for a 3rd down back like this.

He reminds me a little of Steve Slaton and I think OB's approach to offense will get a lot more out of a back like that than Kubiak's.

After watching game tape on Bortles the other night, I was more excited about Storm Johnson than I was Bortles.

Good pick up.

With the 2nd pick of the 7th round the DC Indigenous Americans select............

hi-res-a57f78d5e57b1c6b8cb0bafc3df8cee3_crop_north.jpg

Devon Kennard - OLB - USC = PAC12

This guy has a late 4th round grade for me so can't resist taking him here.

I think he is a very versatile piece with good instincts. Good leader and decent athlete.

Could see him being able to play inside and outside.

The Cleveland Browns select:

J.C. Copeland - FB - LSU - Need a meathead who will run through walls like The Juggernaut. This guy fits the bill, he's built like a brick house. He's mighty mighty just lettin' it all hang out. The fullback's stacked and that's a fact, ain't holding nothing back.

8 ( 223 ) Minnesota Vikings ( NCTexan )
9 ( 224 ) Buffalo Bills ( Blake )
10 ( 225 ) Carolina Panthers ( Bah007 )

I wanted Duvernay-Tardif here for Oakland but he went to Cincinnati in the last round
So give me one second to look at my board and needs

Oakland Raiders select ... Larry Webster III, DE, Bloomsburg

What's not to like about this raw former basketball player!
6'6 255lbs DE only played one year at Bloomsburg and had an outstanding season

His father was drafted and a NFL journeyman

Webster is stiff and has a lot to learn about the game of football and that will come with time and coaching
This guy has rare size and speed and athletic ability for the position
4.58 40, 36".5" vert, and a 10'.3" broad jump, 7.29 3 cone drill with 17 reps!
Just in case y'all were wondering and food for thought ...

Clowney's measurables&stats are 6'5 266lbs with a 4.53 40, 37".5" vert, 10'.4" broad jump, 7.27 3 cone drill, 21reps

Webster is not Clowney but I just wanted to compare the stats to show you why I'm taking Webster here and drafting the unknown product out of Bloomsburg

STRENGTHS: Looks the part with a tall, long frame and the growth potential to get stronger. Has good first step quickness to burst and change directions quickly with flexible ankles. Uses his long arms to make wrap tackles and finish. Has the athleticism and range to cover a large area and make plays in pursuit. Was very productive in his one season of football at the college level and impressed coaches with the way he quickly adapted to the game despite being away from the field for so long. He has a good work ethic and puts in the time to prepare and get better. As the father of an 11-year NFL veteran, he has athletic bloodlines and knows about the NFL process.

WEAKNESSES: Needs to commit himself to the weight room and add bulk to his body. Needs to develop football strength as well, to hold up in the trenches and match up at the next level. His hip movements are a little stiff and he needs to do a better job breaking down in space. Needs to continue to develop his pass rush moves and learn how to better use his hands to protect his body and shed blocks. Will play too tall at times and needs to learn to use better leverage off the snap. Has only one full season of football experience under his belt since high school and lacks ideal experience, doing his damage at the Division II level.

NFL Comparison: Michael Johnson, DE, Cincinnati Bengals - Although he's not there yet, Webster has the frame and athleticism to develop into a similar pass rusher at the NFL level.

With the 220th pick the Atlanta Falcons select..

Ryan Grant - WR - Tulane - AAC

Quick hands, smooth coordination and wins with timing and precision in his routes to create just enough room to work. Grant showed surprising burst at the Senior Bowl, as well as the agility as a route-runner and reliable hands to out-play several more highly-touted receivers.

Just realised that I am done with this draft.

Here are the final drafts for my two teams:

Washington

(34) Lamarcus Joyner - S - Florida State
(66) Billy Turner - OT - North Dakota State
(102) Telvin Smith - OLB - Florida State
(142) Terrence Mitchell - CB - Oregon
(178) Bruce Ellington - WR - South Carolina
(217) Devon Kennard - OLB - USC

Arizona

(20) Kyle Van Noy - LB - BYU
(52) Jimmie Ward - S - Northern Illinois
(84) Ed Reynolds - FS - Stanford
(120) Aaron Murray - QB - Georgia
(160) John Halapio - Guard - Florida
(196) Joe Don Duncan - TE - Dixie State

Pretty happy with those drafts.

The player that sticks out most is Telvin Smith. I love his talents but I think I misdrafted him to Washington.

Tampa Bay selects...

Tajh Boyd - QB - Clemson - ACC

lol, the forgotten QB.

That's straight value getting him in the 7th though. You're a team with serious ?'s at the QB position (Josh McCown, despite what Lovie Smith wants to believe, is a loser) and so you have snagged a guy in the 7th round that can compete with Sticks for the starting QB job at game #8 of the regular season.
