Some feel Mallet was a better QB prospect than the guys in this class, just needed to mature.

Supposedly we can sign him to a shorter extension.

He knows this offense, knows the terminology which is a difficult transition.

He has seen how Tom Brady works/prepares to be a great NFL QB and can model that process for the QB room. He's also seen their problem solving process... what do you do when your offense is getting stoned. What adjustments do you make?

Huh? Mallett fell due to off field stuff which has not recurred since he was drafted. He gave a great very high football IQ interview with Gruden.

Ryan Mallett is not just the most intriguing player in this year's NFL draft. In so many ways, he is the draft -- everything we love and hate about it. He is a tantalizing talent, a worrisome character, a walking rumor mill, a marvel on film, a statistical freak, a top-five talent who could easily slip to the second round, a guy you might love if you met him and one you might hate if you never do.

He was a great quarterback at Arkansas, but some people question whether his skills will translate to the next level. Everybody has an opinion on Mallett. He could be a franchise player for 15 years or flame out in three. This is why we watch the draft.

STRENGTHS
Mallett possesses prototypical size. Has elite arm strength and can make all the throws. Displays smooth mechanics. Fluid, over-the-top delivery. Will fit the ball into tight spots and shows good overall accuracy. Has experience in the pro-style passing game. Good pocket mobility, can buy second chances and keeps his head down field. Fierce competitor and can command the huddle.

WEAKNESSES
Flashes the ability to run through progressions but has lapses in judgment and can force throws when pressured. Accuracy is solid but needs to become more consistent. Ball will sail when footwork gets sloppy. Does not have the athleticism to pick up much yardage with his feet at the next level. Potential maturity/character issues.

One month ago, we passed along a report from NFL Network’s Albert Breer stating that Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett’s draft stock would be adversely affected by “off-field issues.”

Caplan wrote on Twitter Tuesday night that Mallett is “almost certain” to drop out of the first round of April’s draft, even going so far as to say it “wouldn’t shock (Caplan) to see Mallett fall to the third (round).” Similar to Breer, Caplan cites “baggage, and not the kind you carry” as the main reason for Mallett’s projected draft-day slip.

They're not trash, but at this point, the remaining QBs don't seem like the type to ever become franchise-level QBs. We are already stocked up on backup-level/game-manager/get-job-done-but-nothing-more QBs, and so drafting another one isn't going to help. I'm fine if they totally skip QB for the rest of the day. Don't want Mallett, either...

Sure there's the chance of getting incredibly lucky and drafting a Brady-type in the 6th round, but I'd rather spend these late round picks (which are never top-level players) on areas where we need depth. I haven't seen every QB left, but two of the higher rated ones (McCarron and Metzenburger) I have, and I'm not at all impressed with either.

I also wouldn't mind seeing us package up some of the later picks and try to get back into the 5th round if there's someone that looks good who is sticking around. We have 2 6s and 1 7 that we could use to get up to early-mid 5th round. I'd rather see us get one good starter prospect (if one is around) than 2 or 3 backups-at-best types (which we will probably be looking at with those late picks).

Read your own link. "Ball will sail when footwork gets sloppy." Did you watch him in college? His throws sailed quite often, even on easy, short crossing throws. He really was never a great QB prospect, I'm not sure why he is seen as a good one now.

Gotta admit I didn't know much about Ellington but damn seeing him play really hurts to know we didn't take him. I love football players that are good basketball players. Dude is smooth and and really good body control. Damn.

I continue to go back and forth between Smallwood and Skov. The former more athletic and could play OLB. Love to get both.

i was big on Skov last year. He just started off so slow this year I lost interest. He did get better as the year went along. If he can return to 2012 form I would love him. I love Smallwoods hustle. Talk about a guy that plays with his hair on fire. We need a couple of more guys like that on our defense.
