With the 28th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots select...
Derek Sherrod - OT, Mississippi St
Matt Light is unlikely to return to New England next season. And even in the event that he does, he will be 33 by the start of the season and it would be wise for the Patriots to begin looking for a replacement to groom. With Sebastian Vollmer firmly entrenched at RT, New England takes the top available LT prospect.
Sherrod, at 6'5? and 320 pounds, is as big as a tank. His 35 ½ inch arms, incredible lateral quickness, and solid athleticism make him a perfect candidate as a NFL left tackle. He was a team captain and three year starter in the toughest conference in college football.
Sherrod doesn't have overwhelming potential but he has a low bust value. He could come in and start at LT day one. Doesn't project to be a perennial Pro Bowler but can be a solid anchor at LT for many years.
