2009 Texans Talk Member Mock Draft

Exactly. The mods (If they wanna help *wink wink*) and I will take your pick form this thread and post it in the draft selection thread to keep it clean.

Format-wise for the selections do we wanna try something like this?

1.
texans.gif
- Houston Texans

Mario Williams, DE, North Carolina St. - Jr. - 6'7 295lbs
2005 stats: 24 tackles for loss, 14.5 sacks, 1 safety, 1 blocked kick

10290.jpg

Explanation: This selection basically came down to 4 players (Mario Williams, Reggie Bush, Vince Young or D'Brickashaw Ferguson) or a trade down. There was not believed to be value in any trade down scenario presented. Vince Young was not chosen as we just gave David Carr a roster bonus and extended his contract 3 more years. I believe if Carr does not work out, we can trade for a guy like Matt Schaub who is stuck behind Vick. Ferguson was not rated as high as the other two players, plus we can probably get a guy in a few years like Duane Brown at the end of the 1st rd that could end up being better. Bush was passed up because he will not be a feature back that will be able to run between the tackles in the NFL and does not warrant the #1 overall pick. In another couple years, a guy I really like will be coming out: Steve Slaton. His size may drop him into a later round but make no mistake about it, this guy will come in as a rookie and play like a seasoned vet, we'll be talking about the possibility of him making the pro bowl too. This leaves us with Mario Williams. Many don't think he's the #1 prospect but he is, hands down. Mario has the potential to be the best DE in the entire league in only a couple years. He'll be the foundation and building block of our Defense for years. He will be a perennial pro bowler and we'll get to laugh at the rest of the league saying "we were right"... we'll just have to take their ignorant uneducated rants in the meantime.

edit: my explanation my seem outlandish right now but they're just some prospects I think the Texans should look at in the future. ;)

On second thought, that format may be better after the combine and closer to the draft when we all have a better grasp on things.

With the 1st pick in the 09 NFL draft the Lions select:

85711479.7mIbrHLq.AaronCurryvsClemson.jpg

Aaron Curry, OLB Wake Forest

Explanation: The culture of Detroit needs a change. With a defensive minded coach moving in, it is only right that the Lions select the best player avaliable.

2.
2X3FTBANNER-RAMS.jpg
- St. Louis Rams

Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech - So. - 6'3 214lbs
Career Stats: 231 Receptions, 3,217 Yards Receiving, 41 TDs

michael-crabtree-2.jpg

Explanation: The Rams have a lot of needs on both sides of the ball. They were near the bottom in a lot of different categories. On the Defensive side of the ball there aren't many players that warrant such a high pick and selecting Defense the past three years they need a change of pace. I was planning on taking Curry but he is off the board. The Rams still have Orlando Pace on contract for one more year and have a number of lineman that with better coaching can be a solid unit. And there is no clear number 1 tackle out there for the taking, so it is possible one may fall. The Rams need a franchise player and with Crabtree playing on a fast surface as he did in College he will put up numbers and become that type of player and eventually replace Torry Holt. This gives the original "Greatest Show on Turf" another option to spread the field and gives Bulger another option which to be honest he didn't have many this past year. Look for the Rams to pick up OL and any Defensive talent in the next round.

Crank that Crabtree....

This is YTF's big boards top 8 .

Who will he pick for the Chiefs ?

1. Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
2. Michael Oher, OT, Mississippi
3. Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
4. Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest
5. Mark Sanchez, QB, USC
6. Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia
7. Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia
8. Malcom Jenkins, CB, Ohio State

Wow. That is a very unusual start.

Well, with Scott Pioli coming over from NE to be the GM of the Chiefs, I am going to use some of his perceived reasoning in helping build that team. I feel that he is comfortable enough with a young QB like Thigpin. He has shown enough ability, and I think they have enough hope/faith that he will continue to develop in somewhat of a pattern that Brady and Kassel have taken. I don't think the Chiefs will go with one of the QBs in the first round this year. I was looking to take Curry potentially. I still feel that Brandon Albert is best suited for OG, but I think the Chiefs might want some options. With this 3rd overall pick, I am going taking a player who can play LT or could very easily slide inside.

Kansas City selects - Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia

Monroe is extremely athletic and has all of the ability to play LT in the NFL. He forced Albert to LG at Virginia. They have good experience working well together in the past, and either player is capable of playing inside, more so with Albert. I also think Monroe can play on the right side to give them "bookends".

With the 4th overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft, the Seattle Seahawks select...

Malcolm Jenkins - Cornerback, Ohio State

1230_osu_jenkins_sp_12-30-07_C1_9D8TS66.jpg

Explanation - With Michael Crabtree off the board, who they were hoping would still be available, the Seahawks went with another serious position need in cornerback. Marcus Trufant is solid, but he has nobody opposite of him at all. Offensive lineman is definitely a possibility here, but the Seahawks are deciding not to pass up on a sure threat at corner, even if it is a bit of a reach nabbing him 4th overall.

That's what I would have done so ... your screwed ... JK . In two years you'll have the best OTs in football .

Agreed. They needed linebackers and corners but with Curry and Malcolm off the board I went with one of the BPA's left and got a player where they could still use an upgrade to replace Shaffer. He has the size to play RT and will maul people giving the browns a running game no matter who they have toting the rock.

I like your pick.

Bengals and imatexan are next.

Aaron Curry, Michael Crabtree, Eugene Monroe, and Andre Smith all off the board.

I really like this pick a lot. I love the thought of having Monroe and Albert next to each other. I started on a mock and have the Chiefs taking Monroe as well.

They would definitely be familiar with each other after playing together for a few years at Virginia. I thought they drafted Albert to ultimately move to LT anyway but maybe they think he would be a better RT and then draft Monroe as their LT prospect. Having bookends at OT for the next decade may sound really appealing to the Chiefs right about now. They need to get back to quality Chiefs football and that means running the football behind a quality and dominant offensive line.

The funny thing is that in the AFC West, its so damn pathetic, that just about any team in the NFL could conceivably come in and vie for that division title. Hopefully the circle of life will his the AFC South one day so were not so damn competitive and brutal. Maybe once Peyton retires, we can make some sense of it all.

imatexan is on the clock. If he doesnt pick by this afternoon I will pick for him. Any suggestions you can post or PM.

I'd go Jason Smith or Michael Oher. I'm not familiar with the Bengals too much, not sure on Carson Palmer's recovery, etc.

LT- Smith- better pass blocker
LT- Oher- better run blocker

I agree. I would take Smith, but you never know what mentality they want to go with.

Super Mario, did you PM imatexan? He may think it didn't start until after the SuperBowl, and the picks have gone by pretty quickly. Probably just away from the Computer over the weekend. I've often forgotten about something and PMs have saved me.

I PM'ed him this morning, and am giving him all Monday to make a pick. Everyone needs to check this at LEAST once a day to make sure they are not up.

Or if you know you might not be around, send me a top 5 list or something.

Don't understand the pick considering they wanted Jake Long last year. Pace won't be there much longer and Barron, while not a bust, hasn't lived up to his pick. Considering with their second pick of Donnie Avery last year this pick almost seems like a waste. Great WR trio too bad Bulger probably won't be upright to throw it to any of them.

Agreed. Hopefully this doesn't turn into a draft where people just draft who they like instead of what a team really needs. I could see why the Rams would take Crabree, but with a new coach I see no way they don't go with Curry or an O-Lineman.

Hopefully everybody will really participate and really try to make this realistic and fun because that's why most of us are doing this.

For example, I'm drafting for the Cardinals so I am researching the team and it's needs so that I can make a realistic mock for them instead of just drafting my favorite players.

Take a look at FS. Fransisco pissed me off more than once yesterday.

I agree about the Rams too. They need heavy Oline and defense.

My .02

Yeah, I'm doing it like that too. The Chargers biggest needs are DE & OT per http://www.drafttek.com/teamneeds2009.html. It also has ILB, CB & OG as needs. I've already got a top ten of the players not selected.

I might take a FS since Antrel Rolle should be cut for being a dumb*$$. Did anybody else see what he did during Harrisons' int return in the 2nd qtr? He was standing out on the sideline during the return and Fitzgerald ran into him while chasing down Harrison. Fitz finally caught up to him at the 5 and tackled him into the endzone for a touchdown, but imagine if Rolle is paying attention and gets out of his way. Fitz probably makes the tackle at the 5 and the clock runs out. Game goes to the half 10-7.

I dont see any way the Lions pass on Curry. BPA for an awful team.

I would be very happy with Moreno.

I think he is a top 10 pick.

I think Diehard's point was that RB really shouldn't be considered in the first round or two for the Texans. There are other positions that should be considered before even thinking RB.

While I agree with that, if Moreno is on the board I would take him simply because he is BPA, if he was BPA at the time. The way my board is set up he would be BPA unless someone fell big time.

Moreno fits what we do on offense exactly.

Yeah, if you look at that site's draft needs, it shows us as having our primary needs as DE. Then our secondary needs are RB(f), OG, OLB, and FS. Because of that, the highest rated player that fell to us was an RB(f), so their program had us take it.

However, I disagree with their ratings. I think that DE, FS, and possibly OLB, should be set as our primary need with RB(f) and OG as secondary.

I think it's interesting that they show us as having no pressing needs.

I don't think there's a chance in heck we take a RB in the 1st. We passed on Mendenhall last draft and I would expect the same this draft if a similar situation were to occur.

Agreed. Personally, I'd put OLB as a higher priority than the S positions in the 1st. If a DE or an outstanding DT is not there at 15 I'd look at OLB then the S positions.

What time is someone going to make the pick if imatexan doesn't show up?

That mock has the Texans taking Knowshon Moreno, RB! How much credibility can they have?

I didn't check deep into that site. There is no chance the Texans take a RB in the first. We finally have a good RB and we decide to finally take one in the first round of a draft? Makes no sense.
