2009 NFL Draft Thread

There are still a couple of defensive players out there that I like. Courtney Greene is solid SS prospect. And Chris Baker is a big DT with quickness. He may have too much baggage for the Texans, though.

Obviously, as others have said, the Texans never saw a RB they had as a good value at a time when they picked. It would have been more crazy to grab an RB just because you wanted to check off the "RB" box in your needs card, especially given the crap shoot of getting a RB in the draft. There is plenty of time left to look at Free Agency.

Is that really your argument for Moats? He ran a 2 yard TD with GREAT blocking. He did not even get touched. Watch the video of it again.

Moats looking "really good" was not something I saw last year, not even close.

I'm not upset that we didn't pick up a specific RB, I would just like to see us add a talented body in here. A guy like Peerman, Davis, or Ogbonnaya would have been nice in the 6th round, not a project CB when we just drafted a project CB last year, and look to have drafted one earlier in this draft (unless he plays FS).

It just seems to me that you fill in some needs in the 6th and 7th if you haven't yet, and we haven't Backup RB is a big-time need for us IMO.

Wait till Slaton gets injured and Moats is the starter if we don't address this need. You'll be changing your tune real quick.

You think I'm basing Moat's play off of one two yard run?

You really think so little of my opinion?

They pulled Slaton out of the game because he was playing very poorly. Our offense was stalled. They put Moats in there. All he did was make the blocks he was supposed to make and run hard. Not for a play. But for a couple of series. And they scored on both of those series. THEN Slaton was put back into the lineup with his head straight.

Yeah. Moats looked really good in those two series.

Prior to that game, he gave us some good minutes spelling Slaton. Not a lot, but some.

Moats as our 2nd string RB is even worse. 26 carries last year for 94 yards and a TD last year.

You give me a back that gives me 26 carries for 94 yards and a TD in one game, and that's a solid back. I know these stats were spread out over a few games, but he's a BACKUP.

Besides, you people worry too much. You'll be surprised at some of the talent that starts getting cut after the draft and during preseason. A backup and/or complement will be relatively easy to find.

Our number one priority is to shore up the defense. This draft addressed that. Number two is increase scoring in the red zone. The red zone is from the 20 to the goal line, not the 2 to the goal line. A power back ain't gonna get you 19 yards, but a versatile TE/RB/H-Back/receiver damn sure could.

Correct me i'm wrong but is Greg Isander and Trevor Canfield available, if so I hope the Texans pick one of them up. Derek Pegus and Jonathan Casilas along with Darry Beckwith and Frantz Joseph are still on the board.

I actually always like your opinions, I just can't get on board with this notion that Moats looked really good, or even above average to be honest with you. 12 carries 38 yards (3.2 avg, long of 8 yards) 1 TD in that game. I can't remember if his blocking was good or not from that game, but I will take your word that it was good. Even still, Moats is not a good backup RB IMO. It's nice to have a serviceable guy, but as your #2? I dunno about that.

I like your idea about waiting on Denver, or even taking a shot at Edge, but that stuff isn't guaranteed you know? You may not sign any of those guys, even though you wanted to. With the draft you get the option to sign the guy once you take him.

isdaner is def gone. not sure bout canfield

If I wasn't so worried about a RB I would say take Graham Gano or Derry Beckwith. It'd be nice to get a backup for DeMeco, or a replacement for Turk, possibly even Kris Brown when he's done.

Man still some talent available, hoepfully we can grab my two favorites in FAs if possible.

Thanks msusop!

We're almost up. The Colts won't take Jennings. We may still get a change to draft/pass up on the guy.

which will it be?

I cant beleive some of these guys are going to be UFA's. Sure hope we get some of them.

we had 2 rashad's fall to us in good spots and passe don both :(

I wanted Johnson and Jennings, and got neither. Who is this Nolan S?

Positives: Good size. ... Standout player both years of Pac-10 competition. ... Ball hawk at free safety. ... Willing to bait quarterbacks and can make the big play. ... Reads the quarterback's eyes and gets a good break on the ball. ... Better field speed than timed speed in coverage. ... Can time his leaps. ... Good hands for the interception. ... Good agility to avoid blocks and come up to support the run. ... Heavy hitter willing to throw his body into the pile.

Negatives: Has to prove the straight-line speed to be effective as a free safety in the NFL. ... Despite size, ducks his head too often when taking on blocks and can lose track of the ball. ... Overaggressive. ... Can put his defense in a tough position by overrunning the action. ... Takes questionable angles to the ball. ... Medical check on 2006 knee injury.

Well.. still some decent RBs that are probably going to end up being UDFA.. hopefully we can bring some in and see if they fit what we're doing here.

Well maybe he turns into the ball hawk free safety we all want in a few years!!

Who are these secondary guys we keep picking and why do we keep wasting late picks on them?

BIOGRAPHY: Junior-college transfer who started at Arizona State the past two seasons, winning all-Conference honors after each campaign. Senior totals included 64/4/6 after 64/6/7 as a junior.

POSITIVES: Hard-hitting safety with good size best facing the action. Strong at the point, squares into ball carriers and wraps up tackling. Displays a good burst to the play, physical, and works hard to defend passes. Aggressive in all aspects of the game, and shows himself to be a good open-field tackler. Opportunistic and makes plays on the ball when they're thrown in his vicinity.

NEGATIVES: Inefficient and gets caught out of position. Struggles making plays with his back to the ball. Lacks top sideline-to-sideline range, displaying poor speed to the flanks.

ANALYSIS: Nolan is a nice-sized athlete who could be used as a traditional strong safety or in a zone system facing the action. He has athletic limitations, yet he does show potential as a special teams player.

PROJECTION: Free Agent

Looks like they have brought in some DBs this year who are more ballhawks than extra LBs which might be an interesting change of direction for us under Bush.
