2009 NFL Draft Thread

When someone came up with that phrase, "consummate team player," Barwin was the type of athlete they had in mind. He has done everything he could to stay on the field, excelling as a pass rusher, pass catcher and kick blocker for the defense, offense and special team units. Barwin has also played for the Bearcats' basketball team at the conclusion of the football season the last two seasons.

On the football season, he has excelled as a wedge buster on the kickoff return unit, as a gunner on the punt coverage squad, as a kick blocker and a terrific hitter who has delivered bone-jarring tackles on opposing returners. In addition, Barwin proved to be a clutch receiver at the tight end and H-back positions.


Changes came on several fronts for the former tight end in 2008. Barwin switched to jersey No. 5 from No. 89, also moving to the other side of the ball as the team's starting right defensive end. The defensive end registered 53 tackles (27 solos) as he led the Big East Conference and ranked seventh in the nation with 12.0 sacks, breaking the NCAA major college single-season record for most sacks by a player in his first season on defense. He paced the team and ranked second in the league with 17.0 stops for losses, led the Bearcats and Big East with 20 quarterback pressures and blocked three kicks while also catching one pass for a 1-yard score.

I was surprised to see the Patriots pass on Barwin with their 2 picks earlier. He looks like a natural fit to replace Vrable.

These are easily a couple struggable picks, but not for me. I'm really excited. I wanted Cushing and Barwin looks very interesting. I wonder what the coaches have in store for him, because I don't think he's drafted by us, with not needing another DE, unless they see something extremely special or think moving him might be a good risk.

As I wipe the tears away from my eyes I agree.

We should of traded down with both picks so far. Both players we selected or comparible players could of been had later than were they were picked. Im a little dissapointed but not suicidal so I guess it could of been worse.

It's not just you.

I need to stop getting worked up for the draft - I keep coming away disappointed. Last year Adibi was the only high point for me (obviously, I should have been more excited about Slaton). This year, neither of these picks has me excited.
 
Oh well calling it a day...wife is about to shoot me...six hours of sports..Spurs lost...Jenkins not a Texan. Dang bad sports day. I feel Cushing is a good player but second choice. Connor Barwin took wind out of sails and I am puzzled.

Well at least my son went 2 for two in tee ball (each on first swing) I BBQd some good food (dang good salsa) and dang good kiolbasa and pork tenderloin..... This draft has left me feelin "ehhhhh..just ehhhhhh"
 
Well we got Cushing to be our starting Sam which moves Diles to back up MLB/SLB and Bentley is back up SLB/MLB. Adibi/June battle out for WLB

I see Barwin as our situational pass rusher when Smith moves inside. I also have high expectations for Tim Bulman to come in to. We'll see who makes the most of it.

I agree with this. This is what is so frustrating at this time of year. We have many fans who know more than the Texans staff. Look at it a year later and gee, it looks like the Texans staff knew more than the fans...

I disagree with the picks many times, but we will not know if the picks were right until they step on the field.

It is always fun to talk about, though...
 
Most every board out there has Barwin listed as a prospect somewhere in the 40 to 50 range. He is not a reach. We'll get secondary in the third round.

I think that if you are disappointed its mainly due to him being a project with limited snaps. There were a lot of guys out there that weren't near the project this guy looks to be.

Agreed. I think we have been getting shocked with the news of Mario Williams being signed the night before the draft, the news of us trading back for Duane Brown for the past 2 years. Now we have a really good idea that we are taking Cush or Matthews for the past 2 months and its like, "yeah whats new."

I'm really liking this draft.

Cushing is a pretty safe pick. He immediately upgrades our SAM and brings some attitude to our defense.

I know that TTP has been on the Connor Barwin Bandwagon since day one and after reading about him, so was I. I expected him to go earlier than this. This kid has tremendous upside. He's probably just going to be a situational pass rusher (at least at first) but he could become either a WILL or a full time DE with some work. But at the start, this guy is going to increase our number of sacks.

Wow I hadnt realized how good our LB crew is looking. We even have solid depth at all thre spots.
 
At least the Texans are getting there guys and upgrading there defense. Sucks for Raider and Broncos fans because neither team has the faintest clue...you take Michael Mitchell in the 2nd and DHB over Crabtree...are you high on something Al because this is not 1970s football...and McDaniels your defense sucks and you take a RB and then a DE who doesn't fit IMO the DE spot in your 3-4.

It seemed very realistic that Orakpo or Crabtree would be there at 15. After they went just shy of us, Cush kind of became "That Guy"

I'm a USC fan, seen Cush play his wole career. He will be a solid guy. Not exceptional but he will be a stalwart. I would have rather had Maclin myself.

He will be better than Clay, no question, but he won't be confused with Patrick Willis either

He is a uber athletic DEFENSIVE END who will play DE when Smith is inside or out of the game for whatever reason. We have no depth at DE and we need guys who can get pressure on the QB.
 
I'd kind of stopped paying attention, but Michael Johnson seems to be dropping pretty far now. I think most had him as an early 2nd pick. I remember seeing several of the mocks right around the start of the year saying we should take him in the first round. With Barwin, I think we have no interest in Johnson any more, but I'm surprised he's fallen this far.

From what I've seen of him and expect from him, he will prob serve several roles:

1. Immediate impact situational pass-rusher
2. 3rd String/Goaline blocking TE
3. Special Teams ace
4. OLB depth

As I said before, it's not who I really wanted at that pick, but I'm starting to like this pick more and more already. Just look at all the needs that this one pick fills for our team. We can now get away with only carrying two TE's on the roster b/c our new pass-rushing DE can fill that void if needed....not to mention allowing flexibility when choosing which D-lineman or Lb's will make the roster.

If I was a Raiders fan I'd jump off a bridge. That was before this draft. After passing up Crabtree for DHB... I'd swim ashore and then jump off a tall building.

Surprised about the New England pick. Their first three 2nd round picks seemed really solid - this one seemed like a major reach, though.
