2009 draft prospects too watch

Ryan Stanchek, West Virginia - 6-4, 300, SR (LT)

Stanchek earned multiple All-American honors after anchoring an offensive line that generated almost 300 rushing yards per game. Anyone who has watched the Mountaineers over the last few years can testify to the size of the holes that Pat White and Steve Slaton have had to work with. He teams with guard Greg Isdaner to form the best left side of a line in the nation. He may be a better fit to a zone blocking scheme as he is very smart and athletic. He just seems to resemble a Denver Broncos tackle, a little smaller than some tackles, but can move with the best of them. As mentioned before, Stanchek will be the middle of the conversation when scouts try to sort out the mass of talent at the tackle position going into the 2009 Draft.

Im sure the coaches and scouts are familar with these guys after scouting Slaton. We need to keep adding young talent like this to our line.

Hey Texan Diehards, I know that this is very premature but the RB situation needs to be addressed at the end of this season. I think we all pretty much know that. I think I'll young guys will do a good job for us this year, but Smithiak have probably already figured out that this team needs a gamebreaker at the RB position.

With guys like Knowshon Moreno, James Davis, and CJ Spiller coming out in the 2009 draft class, which RB would you like to see the Texans draft? Or, is there going to be a FA available that is actually worth it? In my opinion, I think this organization has had enough of taking other teams broken down backs. Holla Back

Well we already have Brown. So unless he is gonna be a depth player, why add him? Can he play guard?

Currently Wells 6-0 232 from Ohio St is the top back if he comes out. I am hoping that we are picking at a point where he is already gone, he should be top 10.

The seniors to watch are James Davis 5-11 208, like you mentioned, Javon Ringer 5-9 203 and Arian Foster 6-0 224.

Wells is the only blue chip currently on the watch list.

Not a bad year for RBs but not a great year either, at least at this point, last year turned into a better RB class then I had it in August also, so you never know.

BTW to my Aggie brethren, Mike Goodson 5-11 200 is eligible for next years draft. Not sure he has the power to be what we are looking for.

At this point I think the Texans would take a RB in the 2nd that would complement Slaton. Someone who can play the "Mike Anderson" role and get us the short yardage conversions and red zone tds that we've never had to go with the homerun threat we've just drafted.

First round pick I think we'll go with a playmaker in the secondary anywhere at this point because Reeves and Molden haven't proven they can start for us and we dont know how Robinson will come back. Or a stud OLB to pair with Demeco. Or a true weakside DE that can give Weaver his walking papers and move Mario to his more natural strongside DE position full time...

But I doubt we'll use our 1st rounder on a RB. I think they use that pick to put the finishing touches on our defense.

I like James Davis maybe in the 2nd round, Chris Wells in the 1st if we do poorly enough, possibly Arian Foster (although he seems a tad slow-I'll be paying close attention to him over the season), or the sophomore McCoy kid from Pitt (3 years removed from HS i think?).

With that said, I think we can rule out backs like CJ Spiller that seem like 3rd down backs. We've got Slaton so we need a strong, bigger compliment to handle more of the load. Keep that in mind when watching for RB's.

I'd love to get one of the stud Safeties in the 1st round and hopefully a really good RB falls to us in the 2nd round... like a Matt Forte/Ray Rice kind a guy this past draft.

Moreno will not be coming out this next year as he will only be a sophomore. I don't project Wells to be worth a top 15 pick in the NFL. I really don't see much 1st round, upper echelon RBs for this coming year.

He's a redshirt sophomore, so he is eligible for the draft after this year

Since Kubiak became HC he added Joel Dressessn & David Anderson from CSU to the roster, just a thought nothing to get overally excited about

Good thinking with the Colorado St. connection. Wonder if he'd be a good goal line back with that size. Speed-wise he's not too fast but it's not like he's that slow. I'll be interested to see how he plays this season.

alot depends on Chris Taylors development @ RB I think they are kidding themselves if they think he is a FB. This kid could be either but most likely a FB with excellent blocking skills & ability to catch the ball, plus short yardage situations, reminds me somewhat of Jacob Hester.

Moreno if he comes out? goes too early for the Texans to have a shot.

Really? You dont see Wells as a Top 15 pick? I think that you are mistaken. Wells has the size and the speed to be a good back in the NFL. 6'1", almost 240 lbs, with legit 4.4 speed, thats easily a top 10 pick. I will not say top 5, but anywhere past pick 10 would be a steal.

I also have to disagree with your statement about upper echelon backs. Wells, Moreno, Murray, and Davis are all round 1 picks, if they decide to come out.

Devine was a true freshman. He will not be eligible, and I dont think that he will amount to much in the pros.

I was wondering about Taylor at FB too. There were rumors early in the offseason of some people wanting him to go to fullback. Kubiak was specifically asked that question about Taylor at FB and Kubes said something about not knowing anything about that and that he hasn't even considered it. So I'm kinda scratching my head. Taylor has to improve his blocking to make the switch thats for sure... heck he needs to improve his blocking to stay at RB!

I liked Hester coming out of LSU. Thought he'd go somewhere in the 3rd or early 4th round. I wanted him on this team but thought that was too early fur US to spend on him. I wouldn't replace Slaton, Molden, or Adibi. SD picked him in the 3rd i think and had a heck of a preseason game. He wound up in a great situation.

Going back to this Bell kid. The more you talk, the more interested I am that he could be a backup FB type behind Leach. But if things don't improve drastically, we need to look at a solid RB early. I guess a 1st day RB and a late round/ undrafted FB isn't too much. We were discussing the possibility of two picks going to RB this past draft and that was before we got some depth at LB, CB and DE.

I think Wells will go top 15, but I said I don't think he's worth it. Meaning, I don't think he will be too much of an NFL back. I feel better about him than Stewart last year, but I wouldn't have touched Stewart in the first round last year, even before the toe.

You forgot Mike Brisiel, Jessie Nading, and Dexter Wynn. Don't think Wynn will make the team this year, but Nading could end up on the PS. It does seem to be a good place to get the lower draft picks and UFA's from. So, Bell might be a good guess as a late rounder or UFA.

Yep, they got no less than 5 CO State guys on their roster right now, but as you say some won't make it into regular season, but atleast 3 probably will including Brisiel & Anderson. Pretty dang good little farm team I'd say. And the prices are right !

Here is another one we should keep on our radar.

Greg Isdaner, West Virginia - 6-4, 322, JR ...

The junior from Episcopal Academy in Philadelphia was a first team all conference selection in 2007 as West Virginia was once again near the top of the rankings in rushing and total offense. Isdaner has good size and has the athleticism needed for the Mountaineers spread attack. He showed his strength and mean streak recording 57 pancakes last year. He may be more suited to more of zone blocking scheme at the next level. Even with his size he seems to be more of a finesse lineman. Since the Mountaineers do not pass that much, I would like to see him get a little more acquainted to that aspect, but new coach Bill Stewart promises to throw more to limit QB Pat White’s carries. Isdaner has a good chance to be the top interior lineman available heading into the 2010 Draft

And that will be the problem for this years class. Everyone who had a hope of talent has already entered to catch the uncapped year. Unless a bunch of eligible sophomores declare....the over all class will be top heavy. In other words you're not gong to get the depth you had last year after the first three rounds.

Great Blue has their top list out for the '09 draft. he has some interesting switches at the top of his board....notice the number of sophomores and the lack of Juniors.
