I am just wondering what your opinions might be? Do you think that all our problems can be fixed in the draft next year or do we need to bring in experienced help next year? Do we need to focus on the o-line on our early picks or get BPA then try to fix the o-line through some other means, later rounds, free agency, trade ect...? My opinion is that we have a huge lack of talent up front, in my book thats #1 priority right now. 27 sacks is terrible and I think if we can fix that then everything else will fall into place. I am not saying that we would win the superbowl with Brickhands Bradford or our passive defense but I think we could go 9-7 or push for the playoffs if we got lucky. I also think that if the offense showed some win power then it would spark the defense into making better plays. We have some real good talent on defense that just hasn't showed up on Sundays.

yeah with a strong draft a lot of the problems can be fixed along with a new coaching staff

1st. D'brick Ferguson LT
2nd. Hali DE(given our new coach goes to the 4-3 defense)
3rda. Jeff King TE
3rdb. Howard LB
4th. best o-line
5th. best db
6th. best dl
7th. best player

No. Our problems have to do with personel and front office. That wont be fixed in just one off-season. We can make a turnaround with some personel changes now, but if we bring in a new coaching staff then we will be in for another long season as he dumps players and brings in his kind of guys.

I don't think our problems will be solved in on draft. Why?
1)we need an upgrade at LT and Center on the OL
2) we need a #2 WR
3) we need a TE

4)defensively we need more DLineman and an upgrade to get pressure on the QB
5) Coleman/Walker/Payne are all on downside of their careers.

Too many holes to pug in one draft. and with that noone bats 1.000

Not if Casserly is drafting. He's liable to trade down and lose out on the best players again.

No. Putting a good OL together takes years and years. It's not just getting the right players. It's giving them time to mesh, mold and gel together. It will take more than a year or so to get that part of the game together alone. Then there is the defense -- zero takeaways in four games! The skill position players aren't the problem. It's the lesser known positions that need work.

by the very broad context of your question "Do you think that all our problems can be fixed in the draft next year or do we need to bring in experienced help next year?" its taken four years to get here so how in the hell can the Texans possibly fix ALL the problems in one year?

there is some awesome coaching, talent evaulating people out there in football, prying them away from their present duties would be difficult but an option McNair has to assign a task force to study. if there are better solutions to resolve the situation its going to take time to put together a solid game plan for some kind of long term shift in direction. in other words its going to ba a long haul, just take a look at Al Davis & some of the other senior owners in the NFL. we must put our faith in McNair and his ability to resolve the situation & make the best decision for the :texans:

I guess what I was trying to say is that can we use the draft next year to get back on track or is this a longer process than just one good draft. I mean last year I thought I was looking at a team only a year or two away from the playoffs.

I think a good draft can definentally help this team a lot. I also think it may be time to stop trying to build through the draft and start trying to win through free agency. We pass on high profile free agents and rely on draft picks to build on. 10 out of 22 starters are from the draft. That is sad IMO.

1st Round: D'Brickishaw Ferguson, LT, Virginia
2nd Round: Orien Harris, DT, Miami
3rd Round: Tim Day, TE, Oregon <- STEAL AT TE
3rd Round: Pierre Woods, OLB, Michigan
4th Round: Lance Butler, OG, Florida
5th Round: Pete Carroll, COACH, USC
6th Round: Project Player
7th Round: Project Player

We NEED to get a good player(s) from FA like Reggie Wayne, and a good OL. We need to get more depth at DB too, and figure out what to do with Jason Babin because odds are, with Houston's luck, he'll shine somewhere else.

IMO the Texans were going for Boom or bust with draft picks and some players .. Hollings.. took a gamble.
Boselli didn't cost anything..we gambled
PBuc.. so far we gambled and lost.
Jermaine Lewis ..didn't cost, but gambled and lost
Injury (how unfortuant) to Joppru... hurts
Ryan Young.. up and comer ..flopped..

You count those guys ..a starting LT,RT #3 (or 4th) WR (probowl KR at one point)/TE and a RB that supposed to be a change of pace from DD.. can't crack the lineup and we have to draft another one..

hindsight is 20/20 but we expected these guys to contribute significantly to our success (well lewis we were hoping for him to be at least slot back then if I am not mistaken

unless you can draft new coaches and philosophies.....no.

with the 1st pick of the 2006 NFL draft, the houston texans select ...a real head coach!

with the 33rd pick of the 2006 NFL draft, the houston texans select... a winning attitude!

I voted no, because the draft will help in the long run, but not imediately. It will probably take a while for a drafted lineman to get adjusted to the NFL.

I think that they had to go mostly "boom or bust" because they had to build the team from scratch. I think that the problem with the Hollings and other picks you mentioned was it took too long for the coaches to admit they were busts and move on. How long did Boselli stay on the team? They have not evaluated talent very well of players that are already on the team. I know that I am not a specialist at talent evaluation but I think I have been pretty close looking back. I mean Hollings never contributed anything, Bradford used to make some plays but he has never been reliable, Jamie Sharper was always around tackles.

Agreed, but having a good draft won't hurt. We need a great draft as we love making rookies start right away and we need to be more ALOT more active in Free Agency.

No! It took the Brain Trust four years of giving away picks on suspect talent to put the team in this position. It will take them at least two years to get it back (barring that they don't continue to trade away our future).

DJ can block for Carr??? :heh:

yes. provided coaching changes have already been made, if we're running the same staff, new players arent going to accomplish much. a good draft, one where we get 'brick and dont reach/trade away picks could make a large impact. it would take a FA signing or two on the lines, but provided we pick up a tightend, linebacker, o-lineman, and/or cb on the first day we should get lucky enough to get 2+ starters and some depth that would get us back on track.

IMO, I say that we finally trade down and pick up multiple picks in the 1st 2 rounds. We are far from being a few players away, and need at least 3 picks in the 1st 2 rounds in addition to our 2 picks in round 3.

trade down from the 1st overall and pick up either an additional first, or an extra second and a third. teams will want the Leinharts and reggie bushs. This should give us 5 - 6 picks in the first 3 rounds and at least 3 picks in the first 2 rounds.

With those picks we draft:
- a stud LT, preferably Eric Winston - 1st rd
- a highly rated right guard and/or center - 2nd or 3rd
- a playmaking linebacker for the defense- 1st or 2nd
- a solid pass catching TE - 2nd or 3rd
- a solid defensive tackle - 2nd or 3rd
- a project cornerback or bpa with potential - 2nd or 3rd

We then should address other needs with free agency:
- a bonefide, experienced #2WR (a la derrick mason, donald driver, amani toomer, etc.)
- 1 stud veteran starting offensive lineman (anything but LT)
- 1 solid starting OL
- 1 solid LB (a la kendrell bell)
- 1 veteran pass catching TE (a la Marcus Pollard)

I would love to get Reggie Wayne. Ive waited for him for 2 years to become a FA, but I dont think he will play for us. Who in their right mind would. We will have to open up the wallet to get them. That may be a big gamble cause how do we know if he is the product of the system.

You are dreaming. :pigfly:

People stop asking for D'Brickshaw Ferguson, he is the likely the third best Tackle in the draft behind Winston and Marcus McNeil. that is mainly due to his propensity for injuries and not really playing through them. Look for us to take Winston from the U and then Whitworth or Trueblood in the second. Unless we trade back into the first for the next "Kevin Greene"

Texanfan. Drafting Young or Leinert would be like drafting a less talented Carr. they would get the crap kicked out of them and throw more interceptions while getting sacked. Get Carr an O-line that will protect him and that gun-shy attitude will be gone.
