2006 Draft Thread

beerlover

Hall of Fame
time to move on fellow Texans, whats done is done. it will be fun to look forward to next years progress of the players already drafted, College Football and those who declare eliglble for the 2006 draft.

Casserly has stocked the team with a franchise QB, Pro-Bowl WR, one of the brightest young CB's in the league, a solid gritty OLB & now a down & dirty DT. combine these young cornerstones with free agent signings Robaire Smith, Todd Wade & the trade for starting CB Phillip Buchanon the stage is set to add one of the premier lineman in next years draft, it just took 5 years to get here.

so with the 1st pick of the Houston Texans in the 06 draft, beerlovers (very early) pick is Marcus McNeill, 6-9, 340, Auburn

I havn't been able to see McNeil play, do you think that he will be able to play LT in the pros. Because at 6'9" 340lbs, it doesn't seem like he has the feet for LT.

McNeil doesn't have the feet for LT...He may end up being a great RT, but if you put him on the left side, you're just setting him up for failure...If we were to go OL in the first, my top choice would be Eric Winston of Miami, followed by D'Brickashaw Ferguson, followed by Jon Scott...

I agree with DREK. McNeil is just too big. Remember Jamie nails from a few years back. He was about mcneil size and they moved him inside to guard after his try at RT.

I like winston or b-shaw.

I agree too but unless the Texans really struggle or work some kind of draft day magic to move up both your guys will be surely gone. Where I'd expect the Texans to draft is around 20th, a spot where McNeil may still be avialable (although wishfull thinking on my part). I disagree however that he is too big to play tackle, his feet are very quick & agile even with his size. watching Auburn play last year he looked dominant at times in the style of Pace, if he has as good or even better year this year he would be considered top 10 material as well. 2006 year of the offensive lineman :thumbup

I think next year is the year we go after a real TE since Jopru has been such a disapointment and go for the boy Marcedes Lewis, I think hes gunna be just a half step behind the type of player K2 way coming into the league, but with better blocking skills. And less arrogant, just hoe he doesnt get hurt like Winslow. :ouch:

still take the offensive lineman in the 1st round and go for that TE in the 2nd round that is also an excellent blocker with soft hands- Tim Day (ironic he was co-mvp with Lewis on the all pac 10 2nd team)

tim_day.gif

nah...our first rounder next year will be a LT unless shelton is signed and has a stellar year here...jon scott might be able to play LT he might not...mcneil shows flashes of good feet but this season will determine if he is draft to play LT or RT...if winston can stay healthy this season he will be our guy...if not look for us to go to b'shaw...worst comes to worst we'll draft whitmorth or trueblood...both of these guys are LT's who haven't gotten as much tv time as the other guys

How is it that most people on this board seem to have ruled out the possibility that Seth Wand might have an excellent year this year? It is his second year as a starter, and his third year in the league. He came from a second tier football program, and was drafted in the third round. Back when he was drafted, did anyone expect a better scenario than this? He appears to be right on track.

If we go out an draft a LT in the first round next year, we will start from scratch all over again. Whoever we draft will probably not start in their first year. In their second year, if they do start, they will make a lot of mistakes as they continune to learn the position. If everything goes very well, this late 1st round pick will begin to settle in for the long-haul beginning in their third year. This is exactly the track that Seth Wand is currently on. Of course, he must step up to the next level this year. However, we should all step back and take a look at the long view beginning three years ago. Seth Wand has not performed below expectations, at least not below any reasonable expectations.

Do you guys really want to start from scratch and go through another 3-year development cycle? Should we just plan on continuously ejecting our young developing LT's after 2 years if they have not established themselves as elite status LT's within this time? This approach seems short-sighted to me.

hope your right bout' Seth :) but remember we still have McKinney & Weigert who are closing fast to the end of their playing days. as any other position our offensive line needs a top tier playmaker. next year (06) is what you look forward to rebuild & infuse young talented players at what has to be our biggest need position now. if Wand is much improved and I certainly hope so, this would provide an excellent stop gap until a true franchise LT or other offensive lineman can be aquired (without breaking the cap via free agency). then the Texans will have truely arrived :homer:

I like the drafting of a TE its the most glaring hole on offense if we sign shelton. and who wouldn't love the Carr to Mercedes connection.

Beerlover,

Congratulations on your 1000th post. That's a bunch of posts.

thanks, I think :um: far too much time spent but I enjoy y'all and being a part of the best fan base on the best boards in the entire NFL. Vinny really has done an outstanding job moderating, posting & keeping us all in line (though I'm sure its difficult at times  )

as far as the draft its one of my passions as you've guessed beer is another  so I would like to keep this thread moving for all those you feel the finest moment in all of sports is when College Football intersects with the National Football League which depending on the depth of your perspective can begin as soon as your three year old can toss a football up to College and he declares he's going pro through his trial & tribulations making the roster and becoming a starter for the Texans.

its just one big circle and we're placed here to observe, assist and participate to the best of our abilites. i'm just a Texan fan, and proud to be one!

back to this thread, I've already made my EARLY preference mock picks for the 1st & 2nd round in the 06 draft. with the 3rd round pick aquired in the trade with New Orleans (which will be higher than the Texans own pick) the Texans select from Washington State Cougers Will Derting 235 lbs MLB http://www.collegefootballnews.com/2004/Players/WashingtonState_WillDerting.htm

So far, I like your picks, Beerdude...Here are mine:

If Wand/Shelton/anybody solidifies LT this year:

1. Haloti Ngata, NT, Oregon - He would provide good depth for an injury-prone Seth Payne and he seems to be born to play NT...

2. Leonard Pope, TE, Georgia - I know we've had bad luck with our other 2nd round TE, but Pope is worth the risk...

3a. Anthony Schlegel, ILB, Ohio St - Fun fact: Did you know that we've never drafted an ILB? Schlegel is a former Air Force transfer who is overshadowed by AJ Hawk, but he is a force against the run and makes lots of plays behind the LOS...I didn't catch that many OSU games last year, so I'm not sure about his coverage skills, so I'll keep a look out on him...

3b. Jabari Levey, OT, South Carolina - This 6'6", 312 lb LT from the other USC is equally adept at run and pass blocking, and we all know about McNair's affinity for players from his alma mater...

If LT is a question mark heading into the 2006 draft:

1. We trade up using our 2nd and our later 3rd to get Eric Winston, OT, Miami (FL) - Winston is a former TE who is coming off of a knee injury, an ACL I believe...If he bounces back from this injury as expected, the sky is the limit for him...He is a punishing run-blocker who posesses great agility and is able to stay with the speediest of edge rushers...There have been rumblings that he is a better prospect than Robert Gallery was when he entered the 2004 draft, but Winston could conceivable be available in the 7-10 range since D'Brickashaw Ferguson has a good chance of going before him...

3. Dominique Byrd, TE, USC - I wanted to go defense here, but I think that for now, we are set as far as starters go, and we are in dire need of a TE who is adroit at both catching and blocking, and Byrd fits the bill...

Assuming that we pick up shelton and he finally gives Carr enough time to get the ball to our WRs, how does everyone feel about picking up LBs A.J. Hawk, LB Chad Greenway or DT Gabe Watson?

i think our main priority next year will be to grab a LT but if shelton comes then i say we go for mercedes lewis, the TE out of UCLA, or one of the many good LBs coming out next year i.e. A.J. Hawk, Ernie Sims, Chad Greenway etc...

Leonard Pope is like 6'9'' right? Talk about an endzone threat. I checked out the compairison of Marcus McNeill and Jamie Nails, Nails was 3 inches shorter a few pounds heavier and played at a smaller school. Also in a zone blocking scheme, your linemen don't have to have the best feet. I mean just standing there it would take like 2 seconds to run around McNeill, not to mention its a little hard to run through a 6'9" 340lbs mountain of man.

It would be amazing to get AJ Hawk (6'2", 238, 4.46) but he will probably be a top 10 pick and I don't see us trading up for a buc LB...I like Greenway, but I don't think he's fast enough for our system (4.7 estimated 40)...I'm not sure that Gabe Watson will be available when we pick (I'm assuming we'll be in the 15-20 range), but he'd be a great addition...He has good strength and quickness for a man of his stature (6'4", 335) and, like Ngata, he seems to have been born to play NT...

Switching gears, I'm bored so I'll throw out my comparisons of the top 3 TEs in the 2006 draft...

Marcedes Lewis, UCLA, 6'6", 255 - He probably has the best hands of any TE in the nation, plus he is very physical as a receiver...He'll create huge matchup problems for most defenses because he is faster than most LBs and safeties...However, when it comes to blocking, he is rather average and unspectacular...

Leonard Pope, Georgia, 6'7", 250 - He will ne a junior in 2005, but with another season like he had in 2004, I could see him coming out for the 2006 draft...During his freshman season, he was used mainly as a blocker, but as a sophomore he broke out to the tone of 19.3 YPC and 6 TDs...He has been rumored to run a 4.55 40, which is very good for a man of his size...

Tim Day, Oregon, 6'4", 268 - He is just what Beerlover said he is: an excellent blocker with soft hands...He has the size to make tough catches in traffic, but I'm not sure of his speed...

What do you think of Rodrique Wright, NT from Univ of Texas?

rod wright 6'5" 320 he said he was going to stay for his senior season
he is going to be a 2007 draft prospect

Yes, he will be available, but what do you think of him? If our Oline is secure would you consider taking him? I woul like to hear your opinion of him.

It is doubtfull the Texans will select Rodrique Wright having selected Travis Johnson this past draft. very similar players, both are interior types with excellent quickness. i would give the edge in strength to Wright so he may be better suited to play in the 3-4 defense than Johnson who fits the interior of a 4-3 defense. if the Texans had the choice last draft between the two I bet they would have taken Wright.

Rodrique Wright will be one of the top DT's taken for sure unless god forbide he gets injured, here is the pre season list of the top DT prospects-

1. Roderique Wright, Texas
2. Haloti Ngata, Oregon
3. Gabe Watson, Michigan
4. Orien Harris, Miami
5. LeKevin Smith, Nebraska
6. Kwakou Robinson, Virginia
7. Xavier Kennedy*, Oklahoma State
8. Marco Martin, Texas
9. Anthony Montgomery, Minnesota
10. Gerald Anderson, Georgia
11. Kyle Williams, LSU
12. Jesse Mahelona, Tennessee
13. Kedric Golston, Georgia
14. Johnny Jolly, Texas A&M
15. Babatunde Oshinowo, Stanford

I do not think it is a secret that our Line is getting old. Walker, Payne, etc are getting up there in age. With TJ coming in and eventually starting by mid season, wouldnt it be a good idea to put Rod Wright on the other side of the line to learn and eventually start mid next season. I would think our D-Line would wreck more havoc if there were two bulls on each side. In that way Babin and Peek would get more chances to take down the QB, thus helping our linebackers and secondary.

I will be elated if we select a DT in the first round next year. Both Walker and Payne are getting older, and both can reasonably be expected to be gone within three years. The OL and DL positions are not the best places to be breaking in a rookie starter. Coming in as a backup with significant playing time is great, but a starter, no. Let's not wait until it is an emergency on this position. The entire 3-4 defensive scheme is dependent on a strong first push from these three guys.

Either Wright, Ngata or Gabe Watson would be very exciting picks, if we could get one of them.

Robaire is locked in at the other DE spot, so I doubt we take another DE in the first round...Also, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Wright is taken in the top 5 next year, so he should be long gone by the time we pick...

If we have to look for somebody along the o-line why not take Jonathan Scott LT from Texas. Everything that I have read about hime states that he is first round material. I also think we should snag a TE in the second, a linebacker we might want to watch out for in the 3rd or 4th round would be Aaron Harris out of UT. I think a good late round pick up would be Jaxson Appel from A&M, doesnt have great range but is as gritty of a player as they come.

1. LT Jonathan Scott (UT) Big, athletic fifth-year offensive lineman who is one of the nation's best tackles and a fourth-year starter.
2 or 3. TE Tim Day Oregon
3 or 4. Aaron Harris (UT) or Will Derting (WSU)
4 - 7. Jaxson Appel (A&M), and some more interior linemen, on both sides, just to add some depth.

solidifying the o-line should be top priority, then a versitile TE, and then adding quality depth at crucial positions such as LB, O-Line, and D-Line.

thats some nice picks Fico :thumbup

with the Texans own pick in the 3rd round (we'll call it pick 3b) another young playmaker on defense for depth & future nickle packages is needed with the departure of Aaron Gleen the Texans need to groom another youngster without the pressure or investment of a 1st round pick. here is a fine looking CB with excellent size 6' 0" 185 lbs with wheels sub 4.4/40 that will be an academic senior at Miami Kelly Jennings. what stands out about him is his coverage skills and nose for the ball, I believe he needs to improve on his tackling but for a 3rd round pick he has a nice package of skills and alot of upside-

If Jennings is indeed 6'0 and runs in the 4.3s, then he'll be gone before round 3 regardless of his cover skills, lest we forget Stanford Routt...If you're looking for a mid 3rd round CB, I'd suggest Cedric Griffin out of UT...He's more of a CB/FS tweener, but with a good combine/pro day, he should be a good late 1st day option...

please don't break my concentration now I'm on a roll, this is going to be the best damn draft ever and the TEXANS ARE NOT GOING TO TRADE AWAY THEIR 2ND & 3RD ROUND PICKS TWO YEARS IN A ROW. there I feel better now :whew

ok the deal here is to get folks excited about the upcoming season in College football so y'all pay attention to these guys and see who you think could become a future starter for the Texans bottom line. D-REK you are one of my favorite posters so your input is always welcome but seriously any of these guys I've mentioned so far could be 1st rounders come next April. I know that you know that but do they know that :highfive:

Has it occured to anybody else that we drafted TJ so we can cut Gary Walker next season. It is similar to what we did to Aaron Glenn and Jamie Sharper. In which case we probably would draft a DL.

It will be similar once the team actually saves money by cutting Walker as they did on both Glenn and Sharper. Both this year and next year, the Texans would actually lose cap space by cutting Walker--basically his contract is too new and theirs were old enough to make it financially possible.

you know i think by the end of this season there will be no doubt that have one and only one real glarring need...that will probably be TE...if wand can come into his own this season we'll be focused on the best TE out there...we could still pick up a LT in the second or third round just as insurence though...as for A.J. Hawk...the kid is a stud...if we don't keep wong after this season he would be an ideal replacement...as far as any other position to look for as much as i hate to admitt this Coleman is getting up there in years and it might be time to start looking for a new FS

put it this way: wand is on track, he may not be orlando pace, but he is solid. a line is a unit that plays together. a rookie will take 2 years at least to develop and everyone who is whining about wand will complain about the new guy. i have a few people i wouldn't mind taking in the first:
1. A.J. Hawk- better than dj as a player and athelete. instant starter anywhere.
or
Haloti Ngata, Oregon- we have a "DT" that is more suited to play DE in our system. Ngata is a true NT which is unique to the 3-4. It may not be the sexy pick but he is a guy that takes two blockers and two gaps for our lbs.

in the second im looking for someone in the mold of Tim Day. He is a very solid tight end with soft hands.

i believe we also need a hard hitting free safty. maybe a corner turned safty.

Anything less than a LT in the 2006 draft would leave me very very :brickwall

I was already :brickwall  after 2005. Unless there is a reggie bush sitting there we BETTER take a LT or i'm going to become a cowboys fan. :dangit: (why am i lying to myself like that)

Why? We haven't played a down yet.

Why b/c we did absolutely nothing IMO to address our OL situation in the draft when there was some good quality in the 3rd round for the interior line what did we do...........Morency

If you believe the Texans, most of the line problems were mental, not physical. New players doesn't necessarily equate to better players.

The 2006 draft has to be the deepest at the LT position I've ever seen. For us to not move up no matter how low we are to get our hand on one of those LT would be a crime.

there is enough depth to go around without having to move up. for instance after Marcus McNeil & D'Brickshaw Ferguson the Texans can choose between-

  • Andrew Whitworth, 6-7 350 LSU
  • Ryan O'Callaghan, 6-7 365 California
  • Jonathan Scott, 6-6 310 Texas
  • Eric Winston, 6-7 315 Miami
  • Jeremy Trueblood, 6-8 320 Boston College
  • Jabari Levey, 6-5 310 South Carolina

Agreed: I think Wright will have an awesome season. He could be the #1 overall next year. See Baltimores 46 in '05. The perfect swing DE. He'll never have to come out. Not as rangy as Peppers, but he is cat quick with power.
If Wand dosen't make the move this season, they'll go LT. Carr only has so many hits in the tank. If Carr was a cat, he has already spent four of his nine lives. My question is which is better: to start over at LT or QB. Inquiring minds want to know. Makes no sense to me to have the premier young WR in the league and not have the ablity to get him the football....consitantly. We have decent TE's on the roster now who can catch the ball. Can't get them in the pattern because of the shaky line. That first game will tell the tell. 12- 4 or 4-12.
