2005 a Win-Win situation

Working?
Heres how I look at it: Im not super convinced of the quality of the moves we've made this offseason, and Im not convinced we will have a winning season. I will give the guys a chance to show me how talented they are, however, and I look forward to a great year. If we do well, make the playoffs, etc, I will be thrilled. If we don't do well, though, and we completely collapse, the draft class of 06 is filled with players I would love to grab. So, whether or not we do well, theres always a consolation!

These sort of moves were inevitable. Just look at all the teams that were built around old veterans, and where relying on these old veterans got them, and does it really surprise anyone that we would rip out the defense early? I think what's happening is the offense has been built up, and by now the coaches have full faith that even if the defense stumbles here and there, the offense will be able to make up for the lapses and in a year or so as the defense continues to catch up with younger, more athletic talent, we will see a solid team balanced on both sides that has no gaping holes or aging veterans slowing them down.

I don't want to be like Jville and deal with crappy seasons for a long time after making the playoffs.

I think alot of people are worried for no reason. If you look at the level of talent of the guys we grabbed.. they are unproven, but still very talented.

To make a stupid analogy, we basicly traded our nice, safe, comfortable 7-9 volvo for a sleel, stylish, Dodge Magnum. Does it have a 10-6 hemi? or a 5-11 4 cylinder? time will tell.. but either way, there is room in that hood for a playoff birth, which is more than we could say for our old volvo :).

When you hvae the 30th ranked defense and oppenents have no trouble converting on third down against you.. big changes are needed.. we made the changes, now we get to see if they made a big enough difference to fix our problems.

We still have an offense ranked at the top of the league that is getting better every season.. with the youth we have on Defense now.. we may be able to say the same thing about that side of the ball.

I like every change we have made.. I think its gonna be an exciting year.

I've owned a few Volvos now....but never a Chrysler product...not sure I'm all keen on that. :ouch:

When you start a team from scratch you can't build it all at once. The Texans obviously decided that they'd put together the best defense they could regardless of the cost and pair it with a "baby" offense that would have to grow up before it scared anyone. Teams can't win without both an offense and a defense but they can be respectable with just one. They arrived at the decision to do it this way based on who was in the expansion draft and the kind of coach Capers is (basically a conservative/defensive coach). End of the story really.

I am certain that the Texans brain trust knew all along that the original 2002 defense was going to be nothing but a placeholder until the offense was put together and ready to carry some of the load. Now it's being gutted quickly and only a handful of our defensive players will make it through the next two seasons. None of them may survive the transition. The Texans can put an effective defense together very quickly.
