Nfl Draft Day 2

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/2008/draft/players/11547.html

BIOGRAPHY: Two-year starter who led the team in tackles last season with 100 and was awarded All-Conference honors. Junior-year totals included 74 tackles and four interceptions. Father Marion Jr. played with the New York Jets while brother Marion III is presently on the Dallas Cowboys.

POSITIVES: Nice-sized safety who.s at his best defending the run. Quick up the field, displays a burst of speed, and makes a lot of tackles. Adequate cover skills in zone.

NEGATIVES: Shows a lot of hesitation to his game and late arriving on the scene in deep pass coverage. Takes poor angles to the action and not efficient. Marginal instincts.

ANALYSIS: Barber is a one-dimensional defender with limited upside. He is a special teams player at the next level who must be placed in a zone system.

PROJECTION: Undrafted Free Agent
-----

I'm surprised by this pick.

Seems like a good pick, but this is the first guy we have taken that I'll have to defer to the Texans. Just not familiar with him. I'll have to do some research.

I would take Mike Hart, Tommy Blake or another pass rusher in the 7th.

Guy's kinda slow with a 4.71 40 but a very productive safety. 100 tackles but no INT's last season, 4 INT's in 2006. 6'0 210...guy's got size.

41 picks in round 6 and that was number 7.... our next one is 16 of round 7. I doubt the edge rushers we want will be there by the time we get around to it.

Josh Barrett would have been a much better pick, IMO.

He's a lot bigger and WAY faster.

Plus more upside.

I'm a little confused by this one.

You and me both are confused by this one. Could've used a DE. But I trust Smithiak.

This pick to me is a head scratcher........another NFL SS.........and not a big hitter............Is he coming here on bloodline merit alone??????????????

From NFLDRAFTCOUNTDOWN.COM:

Strengths:
Very good size and bulk...Very strong...Terrific instincts...A decent athlete...Does a solid job against the run...Smart with a great football IQ...Hard worker and leader with top intangibles...Productive...A fantastic special teamer...Excellent bloodlines.

Weaknesses:
Does not have very good speed...Does not have fluid hips...Lackluster hands and ball skills...Doesn't make a lot of impact plays...Not a big hitter...Does not cover a lot of ground...Inconsistent tackler...Average motor...May not have a lot of upside.

Notes:
His father, Marion Jr., is a former NFL and All-Big Ten running back..Brother, Marion III, played running back for the Gophers from 2001-04 and currently plays for the Dallas Cowboys...Lettered twice in hockey as a prep..Has a real knack for blocking kicks...One of the few bright sports on a horrendous Gopher defense...Profiles as a backup at the pro level but maybe he can surpass expectations like his brother.

I'm guessing they dont want Andre Davis to be a special teams gunner next season and this is the replacement?

That's cool I guess, in Smithiak we trust :texflag:

Here's to hoping Johnston is there in round 7!!!

That may be your opinion, but if you look back at the Texans draft history and the safties we have both passed on and selected I'm still not covinced that we, or anybody else, know how the Texans grade the position.

Remember the our cry when we passed on Ko Simpson? CJ Gaddis? etc.

I'm not saying the pick is great, just that we don't know what the Texans like at S.

Xavier Omon, the only player in history to record 4 straight 1500 rushing yard seasons just went to Miami. He is going to be more of a power back in the NFL though. He is also from Northwest Missouri State, not Miami (Fla). Stupid ESPN. I have more about him than most small school RB's because my girlfriends brother goes there and is a big time football fan for that school (a DII powerhouse).

I agree 100%. Given our draft history in recent years, it is obvious that the FO is not incompetent. Maybe they have a different vision for the safety position than we do.

*Sighs
First weird/bad pick this draft.

Here's to hoping Johnston or Blake falling to us in the 7th. Lol.
Maybe even Erin Henderson. Really thought Henderson was a late 2nd/3rd rounder.
Surprised he's dropped this far.

32 Peyton Hillis FB 6-1, 240 Arkansas
1 Brian Johnstone DE 6-5, 280 Gardner-Webb
6 Erin Henderson LB 6-1, 236 Maryland (X)
11 Ahtyba Rubin DT 6-2, 320 Iowa State
12 Wesley Woodyard LB 6-0, 227 Kentucky
19 Tommy Blake DE 6-3, 270 TCU (X)
23 Josh Barrett SS 6-1, 223 Arizona State
44 Jamie Silva DB 5-11, 205 Boston College

Still want one of these guys real bad.

I like that list. We can only hope....

Not sure if anyone posted but on NFLN they talked about he was actually an ice hockey player and was brought over to football later. His coach said just like his brother Marion he appears to be a late bloomer. However Mayock reacated as though its a good pick since he does not need to come in and strat right away.
