Patience appears to have paid off for the Vikings in their search for a defensive end.

Unsuccessful in landing an edge pass-rusher early in free agency, Minnesota acquired one of the best in the business at an extremely steep price Tuesday night when it agreed to terms on a trade with Kansas City for Jared Allen.

Allen, according to the Fox Sports website, will become the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history. His new contract will be for six years and just shy of $74 million. Allen told Fox this includes $31,000,069 guaranteed. Allen's jersey number is 69.

Allen, who led the NFL with 15.5 sacks last season and was selected to the Pro Bowl, will cost the Vikings on more than one front. Kansas City will get the Vikings' first-round pick and both of their third-round selections (No. 73 and No. 82) in this weekend's NFL draft, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The teams also are expected to swap sixth-round picks

Derrick Harvey juat got a "no" vote. and who ever wrote this dribble...vikes got a bargin considering the position they were in. Wouldn't be shocked if they gamble on Tommy Blake also before the end of the day come Sunday.

I am not endorsing the disney sports channel in anyway with this link. spend the money get NFLn. Flip the the bird to the baseball guys who treat the football fans like mushrooms with their programing.. they suck and they know it.

lol definitely not a bargain for a player who is close to being suspended for a while, and considering the needs they still have.

this deal is prototypical of Rick Spielman.

One guy is hurt and one guy is battling cancer....and everyone knows it....I'm surpried in a "Groves" guy and his injury history you would jump me on this. They bought the surest thing they could at a riduculasly cheap price. Got a twenty six yaer old at the apex of his game. I gusse Kast, they disagree with your assesment of this years draft class at DE.

in no way could anyone logically call this deal a "ridiculously cheap price."
It's really not physically possible for him to be any price other than expensive seeing as how every single defensive player in the NFL costs cheaper than him. I still find it ironic how they're willing to give up a lot for Allen, but still won't fix their QB problem.

i like how there is the additional 69 dollars at the end of the deal haha. his jersey number too. i definitely think the chiefs got a great deal out of this though especially if they can get chris long and they will be able to get a good tackle maybe chris williams, otah, and definitely cherilus and the extra 2 thirds will help with some of their many other holes

he makes more than any other defensive player because he just got the deal done today, by the Vikings.

that's not to say he's not potentially worth it, but to call it a "ridiculously cheap" deal is asinine.

i wonder how this will affect us? one team that was probably going OL will most certainly do it now with one of those two pics. so thats one less linemen for us to take.

but at the same time, it increases the odds of there being one more DLineman when we pick. hmmmmm

maybe they take a QB with the other pick some sort of QB dash happens and somebody useful falls to us?

wishful thinking. i can't help but feel like the first 13 or 15 guys are major impact guys and we're just missing the boat!

well considering they more than likely would have to spend #17 and 1 3rd (or possibly two of them) to move up and take harvey, this is a very good deal for the vikes

they get one of the best DE's in the league

I think it also increases the probability of the Chiefs drafting a DL at either 5 or 17 to 100%.

Great player but can he keep his penchant for the Jared Juice in check?

Steep price to pay for the Vikes. But their future is now considering their stadium deal. They are a QB away from being pretty damm good ...

Does it really though ?
You know if the Vikings had retained their 17, they for sure would have sccoped up a Harvey if he made it to them. On the other hand, its likely that
C.Long or Gholson or both are available to the Chiefs for their 5. Now I realize they also need a LT and may even be intrested in QB Matt Ryan, so
they could have higher priorities for the #5.
Re the compensation the Viks paid, I'd say its in the vicinity of fair price.
Allen doesn't really have character issues, he just has a fondness for the sauce.

The Chiefs will almost certainly take either Gholston or Long at 5 now. Now that they have three third round picks, they have the ammo to move up a few spots to snag the OT they want. Meanwhile, Matt Ryan is going to take a tumble unless the Falcons take him at 3.

I think a Chiefs-Bills trade is quite likely now. Buffalo wants a WR, but picking one at 11 is probably too high. The Bills could trade back with KC, acquiring the #73 pick (one of the 3rds that the Chiefs got from the Vikings) and the Chiefs' 4th round pick--1250 points for 1261. KC would then definitely get one of Clady/Albert/Williams/Otah at 11 and still have a high second and two thirds. Meanwhile, the Bills would still probably be the first team to take a WR at 17.

I think Allen is an excellent player. 15.5 sacks in 14 (IIRC) games is just sickening. I've just never been a fan of trading draft picks. Especially that many.

Having said that, I agree with AJ. The Vikes are a QB short of being an awesome football team.

Steep price to pay. Considering Harvey is likely going to get picked up by the Panthers I guess they didn't have much of a choice and got last year's top sack artist who is young. Got great tackle play that'll help him even more. They could trade us their second now for Sage and have a pretty scary team in the NFC.

Whoever said this is a ridicolously cheap price is smoking something. Not only did they sign his to be the top paid player on D in the NFL, but they gave up there #1 and both #3's. That is the definition of ownage. The Chiefs fleeced the Vikings.

Don't get me wrong, Allen is very good, but I don't know if I would use the "great" label on him. I could see giving up the #1 pick and maybe a 5th or something to go along with it. A 1 and 2 #3's is too high, plus you now may be hamstrung in future years. This has cap ramifications down the line.

Bad move for the Vikes. He isn't worth it. Great move for the Chiefs.

.. have you even seen him play?? i saw the chiefs-bengals last year and he was wreaking havoc

you do realise they would've needed to use those picks to move to get one of the premier DE's anyway (gholston/harvey).. this way they eliminated the bust risk and have one of the proven best DE's in the nfl

it was a good deal for both sides

it'd be a much better deal if Allen wasn't so easily suspendable.

im sure theres probably something in the contract about it...

plus the fact that he'd have to:

a) start drinking again
b) get caught drink driving

significantly reduces that risk imo

I'll repost this from the NFL forum

I think taking into account the money they spent and the picks they gave up, it was way too much BUT

Their interior line guys with Allen coming off the edge now...the defense was #3 last year....even with a decent secondary their D will be scary and add to that the fact that they will have AD to control the clock too.

Will they be fav's to win their division? They're facing Detroit (not really THAT scary), Chicago (have kind of gone down hill, huge QB issue), and Green Bay (How will they play without Favre??) if I remember the North correctly. Not that Minny doesn't have QB issues, but the have a great RB tandem, got some wr's this year and should have a stellar defense.

The chiefs have somewhere between 20 -28 million to spend under the salary cap, in which a large portion of that is going to go to the 2 top 20 1st rounders they have, assuming they use them both. I can't really see how they'll be able to pay all of their draft picks, at least up to the 3rd round. They'll either be dealing on draft day or some of their older vets are going to be SOL come june 1st.

the draft picks shouldnt fill 10m in cap nvm 28m

the guy sounds like an alcoholic to me, and unless he's getting treatment for his problem, i'm 100% he'll start drinking again. or switch over to something else, which is a pretty routine thing for alcoholics/addicts to do. 2 DUI's already.

Don't want to hijack the thread, but would anyone trade Mario for the 17th pick and two 3rd round picks?

I have to admit, I'd think about it.

No freakin' way. The Chiefs wouldn't have dealt Allen if it weren't for contract issues. And that Allen is double secret probation.

The Vikings have grown impatient with drafting 1st rd. DE's & where willing this time to just pay for the sure thing. there are incentives to reach those numbers so Allen will have to produce, to produce he has to play & play clean, hard MVP caliber :)

First part might be true but the more I think about it would Allen have chosen Minnesota via FA? My line of thinking is if you make a deal like this you're banking on you feel you are a player or two maybe from getting to the Superbowl and you're comfortable with your depth. If i am Minne I'm not sold on both then again I didn't pull the trigger on the deal.

Great deal for KC. Even Herm can't mess up turning around the team with that kind of Ammo. D wasn't that bad last year but the offense needs punch outside of Gonzalez and LJ. Bowe looked good but he could use help too.Maybe i am just trying to hope they don't take Williams or Albert if they fall that far.Thinking one of them will.

thats alot of generalising/stereotyping

theres plenty of reformed alcoholics too (not even saying he is even one in the first place) and hes been off drink a year and look where hes gotten.. nothing to think he'll relapse

he might have been just unlucky with the DUI's too.. ive driven sometimes after drinking and if i was tested id prob have been over the limit despite being safe enough to drive. doesnt make me an alco (im a pretty occassional drinker tbh)

just saw this on SI btw
One league source told SI.com on Wednesday that Allen's two strikes in the program get wiped off the books if he stays incident free through September, at which time his most recent DUI will be two years old. He would then be out from under the threat of a year-long league suspension if he incurred another DUI after September, the source said.

its a lock KC takes a tackle with one of those 1st rd. picks some people even think they could take two (the 2nd being one who could flip inside & play guard too). not good at all for Texans hopes of addressing OL 1st rd.
