Calais Campbell

since his somewhat disappointing combine, calais is someone who's fallen off the map in terms of consideration @#18.. i read this article on him and though id pass it on

http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/football/blog/2008/03/draft_profile_miami_de_calais_1.html

Q: What are Campbell's strengths that make him a likely first-round pick?

A: Campbell is very mature, articulate and level-headed. He accepts criticism and truly wants to improve. He is not egotistical, and is very much a team-oriented person. Physically, he's a 6-8, 280-pound tower of terror. He's lean, but muscular and agile and has great initial burst and speed. He has extremely long arms and very strong hands, so opponents have great difficulty getting into his body. Offensive linemen struggle trying to pull him, grasp him or get their hands on him. "He's so physical and strong with his hands that he can twist and do things with guys who are 300-pound linemen that I haven't seen other guys do," Miami defensive line coach Clint Hurtt said.

Q: In what areas does he need to improve? Is Campbell's physical strength a concern?

A: This past season, Campbell sometimes failed to catch his prey after a tremendous first move toward the quarterback. Scouts Inc. said he needs to improve his "closing speed" and doesn't always get great hand placement. He also sometimes tires toward the end of the game. That would probably be more a matter of improving his endurance, as opposed to overall strength.

Q: Some would argue that Campbell had a better sophomore season than junior season. Would you agree, and if so, what were some reasons for the decrease in production?

A: Yes, I agree. And so does he. He was disappointed in this past season, saying he tried too hard to be a leader and sometimes forced plays -- even when they weren't his to make. Campbell was a preseason Playboy All-American after a sophomore year in which he was named first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference, with 10.5 sacks -- 15th in the nation and fourth among sophomores. He had 84 tackles, including 20.5 tackles for losses, which ranked fourth in the nation. He also had three forced fumbles and 17 quarterback pressures.

Because of his success last season, Campbell was double-teamed much of this season, and he found it more difficult to break free to pursue the quarterback. He struggled at times but still finished with 50 tackles -- 12.5 for losses -- six sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He also had an interception.

Q: Describe Campbell's personality. What is he like off the field, and what was his relationship like with teammates, coaches and the media?

A: The guy is a gem. He's truly a warm, kind-hearted young man, who is outgoing and well-spoken and so nice to everyone -- and not in a phony way. He's a big teddy-bear type, very demonstrative.

And boy, is he ever hyper.
Campbell is the player, who, during games, looks toward the fans and repeatedly lifts his arms skyward, and then toward his body. "I'm a very outgoing, optimistic person, " he told me. "I've always been the guy to keep everyone excited. It stinks when people boo, so I try to give them reason to cheer."

The beat writer who gets to cover Campbell will be one lucky person. He's always been helpful and kind to reporters. No matter how bad the situation, he has talked to us. He's just plain classy.

"He's a great person," Hurtt told me. "The guy has unbelievable work ethic, and he's an extremely intelligent football player -- very coachable and humble. He stays very level-headed, and he's always asking questions and eager to learn. It's very rare to get someone so down-to-earth. He's the same kid he was when he got here as a freshman."

who does that remind you of....:mario:

What was his 40 time?

If you're talking about Calais, it was a very slow 5.03 at the Combine. That's what's causing his drop on the boards. If you're talking about "Sugar Bear's" 40 I have no idea, but he sure got to the moon pretty quick! LOL!

He's kinda Sean Jones like but I'm not sure he is as good a player as Jones was...Jones was a tall, lanky and hard to get into his body but not quick.

We need a guy to play RDE full time. A speedy rusher to pressure the QB and allow Mario to play LDE. Campbell might be that guy. So his 40-time was slow at the Combine, what is his explosion like off the line? Remember Mario is fast he ran like a 4.6 something and officially got timed at 4.7 However he doesn't get off the line fast at the snap. Isn't that why he needs to be on the left side? Sure he's a tremendous tackler and great in run support but for a pass rushing DE we need somebody who takes off like a missle at the move of the ball and can get into the backfield quick.

Someone I was talking Draft to said that Calais Campbell has the potential to become a pro bowl DE. But that he is an extremely risky pick. Guy said that Campbell is the epitomy of the High Risk/ High Reward type of pick. your either going to get an All-Pro or a complete Bust.

So I'm very hesitant to take him at #18. I want just a real solid player that's going to be here a long time. but if he's the man for us and develops into his potential- We'd have one NASTY DL.

Some of the Mock Draft sights, like WalterFootball.com, have him possibly dropping to the 2nd round due to his poor Combine showing. So if the Texans want him, I think it would be better if we could trade down a little in the 1st, maybe to the late twenties. From everything I've read about the guy he seems like he'd be a good fit here, as far as character and work ethic. As for how good of a player he will/could be, it's like your friend said, "High Risk/ High Reward." Do we want to roll the dice? JMHO!

If he is there at #18, you have to seriously look at him if your the Texans. Combine times are overrated for lineman. Quickness, technique, and heart are more important than being able to run fast. If he is the Texans BPA at #18, they better not hesitate to take him. DE is still a position of need. I wonder how he did in the shuttle and agility drills? Dude makes plays irregardless.

At the end of the day, as long as they spend the 1st Rounder on defense and its a good player, I will be happy. No RBs unless Mendenhall or McFadden.

Although I think we have bigger needs (CB or LT), he would be very tempting to pick at 18. Can you imagine a DL with Mario and Calais on each end? But for us to take him, I would think several CBs, LTs, and RBs would have to be picked already.

I think he only ran the 40 at the Combine. He didn't do the bench press, vertical jump, shuttle, or anything else from what I can find. Maybe he had an injury or maybe his agent recommended he wait until his Pro Day. Not sure when Miami's Pro Day is. I'll have to check. :user:

It was on March 1st. [Edit: It was on Feb 29th, reported on March 1st]

• Campbell, who decided to forego his senior season at UM to enter the NFL Draft, said he thought he ran another ''slow'' time in the 40-yard dash after running a disappointing 5.06 earlier this week. Despite struggling with his speed, Campbell said he improved his vertical jump by five inches.

Campbell said he has spent the past several weeks working with a trainer in California, trying to strengthen his upper body and gain weight for the bench press. But he says he will now stay in Miami and train with UM strength coach Andreu Swasey.

''I think most scouts think I'm anywhere from mid- to late-first round. I think one or two guys think I might slide to the early second,'' the 6-3, 283-pound defensive end said. ``But I know I can impress people just on potential. Potential is one thing I definitely have.''

Wright, meanwhile, who had an up-and-down career during his three years as Miami's starting quarterback, said he expects to be drafted. He also said he didn't need to talk to NFL scouts about the struggles he endured at UM or the fact he had three different offensive coordinators coaching him while he was here.

''The feedback I've been getting is very good,'' said Wright, who added he was approached by Vikings coach Brad Childress and Chargers coach Norv Turner during the six days he spent at the scouting combine. ``They said they were impressed with how I was throwing the football.''

He's still expecting mid-late first round pick.

Well, I found it. They had their Pro Day on Feb. 29th just after the Combine. I couldn't find any numbers on Campbell, but I did find an article from the Miami Herald that said he didn't really help himself. Here is some of what it said;

Some, such as linebacker Tavares Gooden, said they took advantage and scored well. Others, such as Campbell, one of two Canes expected to be taken in the first round of April's NFL Draft, said they didn't.

So there it is. Do we take a chance at #18, or trade down and maybe get him later? Or, do we pass on him completely?

My View:

Take a franchise LT if available. If not, look at a franchise type of CB or RB.

If none represent good value at #18, try try TRY to find a trade down partner and take the deal.

From the new spot, re-evaluate the players available specifically targeting a LT or CB. If neither are available as BPA, look at the players/positions that are like RB, G, OLB, Pass rushing DE. If in this case Campbell is the BPA at this point, I might take him.

If franchise LT/RB/&CB are all gone at #18 and we CAN'T trade down. I look at BPA and take the highest rated player at LT, CB, OL, RB, OLB, DE, S, then WR. And now, I'm glad I'm not the GM of an NFL team.

in my mind, these are the (realistic) players id take before calais:

OT- Clady,Chris Williams
DE- Harvey
RB- Mendenhall
CB- Mckelvin, DRC, Jenkins

if calais was there with stewart and talib, i still might take him

From his Pro Day:

Calais Campbell, Defensive End -- Miami (Fla.)

Campbell chose not to compete on the bench press, which surprised many after his poor performance at the combine (16 repetitions). He tried to better his 40 time, yet ran an uninspired 5.06 seconds.

I would take him if the top 3 CB's(Leodis McKelvin, Mike Jenkins, Dominque Rodgers), The top 3 OL, (Jake Long, Ryan Clady, Chris Williams) the top 4 DE's (Chris Long, Vernon Gholston, Derrick Harvey, Phillip Merling) and Mendenhal were all off the board.

i actually know calais personally (im a student at UM) and he really is a good kid everything in the original post is true. I also was at the pro day (was closed to public but snuck in) and heard he did terrible. He ran a 5.05 and didn't bench again, stickin with 19 because his agent told him to. as cool as it would be to have him and mario together, I would take a LOT of other players over him including the top 8 corners and pretty much everybody else you guys listed. only way i pick calais is if we trade down to late first round and pick up an early third (would have to be from SF or a team that traded and got an early third) or late second.
