Aggies Insider: Wary gang greets Sherman regime

COLLEGE STATION – Mike Sherman is proving his smarts this off-season, with apparent intentions of shifting hefty Jorvorskie Lane from tailback to fullback – and continuing with the prior regime’s plans of shifting Jordan Peterson from cornerback to safety.

Now, Sherman, Texas A&M’s first-year football coach, simply must prove he can shift over a jilted following – one that seems to have lost its faith in the lofty idea that the Aggies always will be – and, by golly, should be – in the fight for a Big 12 title.

Simple, right? Not quite.

A&M football fans are coming off a bad five-year marriage, one in which they got taken for lots of heartbreak and even more cash.

As an Aggie, I for one have had a good feeling about this hire from the start. I really feel like Sherman is going to fit in very well in College Station, both from a personality stand point and a success stand point. The guy's coached at A&M before, will embrace our traditions and spirit, and has proven to be a successful coach on the professional level. I'm not saying A&M is going to turn into a national powerhouse, or that I'm sure that Sherman is the right guy. I just think he's a good coach, he fits at A&M, and he will build the team into something we can be proud of *knock on wood*.

Deja vu. I remember things like this being said from all directions just a few years ago.

But in all seriousness, A&M should be glad to be rid of that clown. Ya'll have a real coach now, and as a UT fan, I'm not too pleased about the change.
 
Apparently your deja vu ends with me, as the majority of aggies are approaching this with quite a bit of apprehension.

I admit I was somewhat excited when Fran came to town as well, but that was a different scenario because that was an instance of just being excited to see change for changes' sake. My knowledge of the college game isn't nearly as good as my knowledge of the pro game. To be honest I hadn't heard of Fran until we hired him. This is different to me because I know quite a bit more about Sherman from his time in Green Bay and obviously his time here with the Texans than I did the last time we brought someone new in.

I know Sherman can coach, my concern with him is will he be able to recruit. From what I've seen we seem to have had an o.k. recruiting class this year, but being away from the college ranks for so long has me slightly concerned at his ability to connect with young players and bring in talent.
 
I thought the way Fran left Alabama would hurt the Aggies in the recruiting war and it did. Also they decided to get cheap when it came to assistant coaches and again it hurt them.

I think the Sherman move is a good solid safe move. The kind of move they needed. BTW, I was not excited when I saw Sherman's name being mentioned, I wanted someone like Bo Pelini but once the Nebraska job became open knew he was out, I shifted my eyes to guys like Todd Graham, Major Applewhite, or Jim Harbaugh. Young exciting names.

Former HC R. C. Slocum did some radio interviews that changed my mind. And now the things I have seen Sherman do as a HC have convinced me he was a great hire for the Aggie's.
 
Sherm and Cromwell will be just fine. The defense is another thing...

I wonder if Javorskie cried when he got moved to FB. "OMG, you mean I have to block?"

Agreed I thought it was a safe move for them. Still think he's going to have trouble recruiting at first but his nfl pedigree and record will help some. Texas recruiting just got more interesting with June Jones going to SMU.

No offense but Major wouldn't have even sniffed the A&M job. He wants Mack's and IMO it's only a matter of time.

A&M just hasn't been the same school since it joined the BIGXII to their credit as well they have put up a tougher non-conference schedule. Reminds me a bit of FSU. Elite school under the old ACC where they could beat up on conference opponents but new ACC is a LOT tougher. Will they regain their old form? Time will tell. He's gonna be a FB in the NFL so he might as well learn the position to help his draft stock.
