who's your favourite player @ #18 now

Maddict5

Hall of Fame
my top 5 for #18 now looks something like this:

1. Leodis McKelvin
2. DRC
3. Rashard Mendenhall
4. Derrick Harvey
5. Chris Williams

1. Williams
1. Stewart
1. Mendenhall
1. Talib
1. Cromartie

If they are all available at 18, then I want to trade back.

and 1 speed
A power back with that speed is almost unheard of being available that low in draft. Not clear on what you mean by 1 speed. He hits line hard and fast and then accelerates into secondary. There are faster backs who might not get past L.O.S. or be able to break a tackle in secondary. He is a home run threat. He can move the ball in short yardage and in red zone. What other backs offer all this? McFadden, but some on this MB think he will not be as advertised. We might be able to get a very good RB later but odds just as good we might not. A "franchise type" player at a need position is pretty hard for me to pass up.

I second this right here a 100%

Even though I have never said either way, I will now, I am one of the people that think McFadden is not as good as advertised. He is a burner for sure, but I think he will have issues at the next level. A lot of character issues as well the way I see it.

Although It'd be hard for me to get upset if McFaddin landed here, I'd have to agree with y'all. He seems like he'd be great once in the open field, but not bangin it up the gut.

I'm not really worried about him being there at 18 anyways.

1. DRC
2. Chris Williams: Perfect ZBS OLT. Beats Salaam out in OTAs.
3. Trade down
4. Glenn Dorsey If he slips this far boom/bust.
5. Kenny Phillips...Looks like the guy has the hips to play CB.

Leodis McKelvin: top ten

Derrick Harvey : top five after his numbers I could seriously see him going to Minnesota now. Proto Typical 4-3 end.

Rashard Mendenhall: top fifteen.

No offense YTF Aqib Talib has danger Will Robinson writen all over him. the guy will have to work awefully hard to get coached up to start by september.

mendenhall offers all that and more imo

stewart doesnt really accelerate.. thats the point. he has 1 speed which is a pretty good one but he doesnt that zip or extra gear when he needs it.. i think he'll be a brandon jacobs type back- which is, again, pretty good but i dont want that at 18

I have no problem with your guys selections but do you y'all really think they'll still be there @ #18? just playing devils advocate :evilb:

look its gotta be a cb, regardless if its a trade down or not. if the Texans stay @ #18 they go for the best cb available in this case it's Aqib Talib, Kansas.

Combine really helped him, confirmed measureables, smooth in back peddle, balanced in control athlete, fluid hips, explosive in space with excellent vertical. Would fit Texans style (play in front, excell in run support & very physical).

realistic favorites -
1a. Aqib Talib
1b. Antoine Cason
1c. Brandon Flowers

unrealistic favorites -
1a. Leodis McKelvin
1b. Rodgers-Cromartie
1c. Derrick Harvey

personel favorites -
1a. Jonathan Stewart
1b. Rashard Mendenhall
1c. Chris Williams

What I saw of the mans footwork...Talib is a bust pick. He is a first round athelete with a ten cent brain. I don't know if he dosen't take coaching....I don't know if he is being coached up and too stupid to understand....but the guy is a bust from my tree. I'd rather force Phillips into the CB positon than select a loose canon like Talib. There has gotta be a reason for his horrendous mechanics...I'm telling ya...let someone else draft this guy. He's a bushel full of trouble.

Calls them as I sees them. Go back and watch his drills. I'm not a Db coach...and I get it. The guys feet are a train wreck. Telling me the K.U. coaches have been setting this guy a drift for three years ...I don't buy that one. It's either attitude or brain cells. And either one of those spells trouble.

I think Deion and Mayock hammered Talib also .

Gibbs is a throw back OL coach . He said in Atlanta ... he needs smart guys who want to achieve .

I take this as ... if you aint willing to chop block ... you can't play . How do you measure that ?

NFL Combine Transcript - What teams have you talked to?

"I talked to the Patriots. It was just a good conversation. I felt it went pretty good. We talked about football, my history, family background, a lot of stuff."

NFL Combine Transcript - How would you fit in with the Patriots?

"I feel I'd be a pretty good fit wherever I get picked." What do you bring to a team? "My ball skills … when the ball is in the air, I find a way to get it. I can play man coverage, I'm a pretty good tackler."

NFL Combine Transcript - How do you stack up with the other corners here?

"I thought I was going to be one of the bigger corners, but it's a pretty big group."

NFL Combine Transcript - Any corner you try to emulate?

"I'm a big Deion Sanders fan. I aways want to be the shutdown corner, the Prime Time of my team. I come up and tackle."

NFL Combine Transcript - On his ability to make interceptions (he had 13 in three years at Kansas)

"They want interceptions at corner. If you have good hands, it shows you can make plays on defense. It matters a great deal."

I think it's really gonna come down to luck this year, luck and timing. 3 needs to fill and a probable overpriced FA market is gonna make it tough. One of the needs (OT, CB, RB) will have to be covered in FA, then we have to get lucky and have one of the other 2 available at 18. Personally I think the order of importance demands that CB be addressed BOTH in FA and pick 18, or 3rd rounder. I just think a lot is gonna have to go our way to address all 3 needs in one offseason. I think probably at least 2 needs will be patch jobs this year because of the cost and luck needed to pull off anything greater. I trust Smith/Kubiak to do the best they can though, and pray for the luck element to make it a positive offseason. Then we just need to get some of our other guys healthy, but more importantly, avoid the same fate this year with the injury bug. GO TEXANS!

there is a surprising lack of following regarding Talib not to mention he played @ a high level in national landscape. He is not the kind of corner that plays man he is a classic cover 2, which seems to fit what the Texans want. the cover corners traditionally are going to be your higher rated prospects, like McKelvin, Cromartie, Jenkins. you must consider his strengths & how well those strengths fit your specific needs/system. his pack peddle is smooth (in balance, foot placement, head up on a swivel) his hip turn is fluid (can open & flip hips left or right) is sudden enough (with cushion) to change direction with speed to recover and you know what I specificly remember him making low tackles when required in space. His vertical was what? 38" or something along with his wingspan 33" arm length, height 6006 weight 202 forty 4.45 & big hands for position 9 3/8. (just a note on McKelvin who seems to have hands of stone it might be related to his smallish hand size 8 1/2).

c'mon threetoedpete, CB's don't grow on trees either, just like OT's :)

Not sure of the order just yet, but I like:
*LT- Chris Williams, Vanderbilt
*G/LT- Branden Albert, Virginia
*RB- Rashard Mendenhall, Illinois
*CB- Antoine Cason, Arizona
*CB- Dominique Rogers-Cromartie, Tennessee St.
*CB- Brandon Flowers, Virginia Tech

Did anybody get to see Cason and Flowers do the drills during the Combine? For some reason I never saw the first group (Cason,Jenkins,Flowers, etc.)

they showed some of the 40 times later in the broadcast but did not show the skill drills. if you have it on DVR go to almost the very end.

1) Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Illinois
2) Jonathan Stewart, RB, Oregon
3) Reggie Smith, DB, Oklahoma
4) Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB, Tenn St
5) Chris Williams, OT, Vandy

There are some others and I would be happy with quite a few players at #18, but these 5 are my personal favorites.

I think there is a chance Flowers will beat out DRC in the draft wich would probably mean we would have at least an average chance DRC will be available at 18. My big problem with DRC is he has a light athletic build. Anyone know how well he matched up against the larger recievers? If Flowers and DRC are off the board at 18 hopefully Stewart or Williams are there. I really hope we get a starter in FA Friday, preferably CB or RB.

If we want an instant starter, Cason would be a great pick at #18.

He is being overlooked right now because he isnt a super-athlete like DRC.

But he is a solid player. Most likely would have been a top 25 pick last year, so I see good value at our spot.

Unless he improves his 40 at his pro day, I agree with you. I don't really put much stock in the Combine, so his 40 time doesn't bother me as much as it would if he had an average College career. The guy ain't skeered to put a lick on someone too.

Difference of opinion. Both are 5'11". M @4.46 & S. @4.48 and 25 lbs heavier. That does not necessarily equate to harder to bring down but is a hint. Both are juniors. S is 3 months older.

Stewart's last 3 college years:
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=173412

Mendenhall's :
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=174861 I would be happy with either but prefer Stewart. Unless you see each make the same run how do you know which has 1 or 2 speeds? Further tests may differentiate the two but it will be game film against game film and Texan's preference if both are at 18. IMO, if both are there and a trade down guarantees getting one of them and another pick? Done deal.

CB seems top-heavy this year so I think we ought to get one asap if the value is right.

But I still like Kenny Phillips and Rashard Mendenhall.

You guys rate the players that might be available at #18. Excellent (possible HOF/ immediate starter), very good (should start by game 4 and will start by game 8)and good (worth a first round #18 but may not beat out Texans at his position this season. May start some games.Should be starter in 2009). I think this would offer interesting info on how these guys are perceived.

Thanks to the combine, the Texans could trade down with Atlanta and still get both Talib and Cialis Campbell with the 2nd rounders.

I'd take it:specnatz:

Yea, I have noticed this over the last week. I would be very happy with Cason at #18. He may be the most NFL ready corner in the draft. Didn't he win the Thorpe award?

Another thing to mention is wear and tear. Mendenhall is only 20 and didn't do a whole lot before this year. I would think that his legs are fresher than Stewarts'. These RBs can run out of gas pretty fast.

Has Aqib Talib Done Enough?

That's the question that must be answered by NFL talent evaluators. Talib ran an unofficial 4.48 which is certainly faster than most expected the Kansas CB to run, but before you go off and run around screaming to your other draft-fiend buddies about how much faster Talib is than everyone thought, keep in mind that there is a 40 yd dash speed and there is game speed and scouts have told me that there are too many times on film where you see Talib lack the closing speed of a 4.48 CB. On the other hand, Talib's got wicked ball skills and this time might be enough to get a fence sitting team to come down in favor of Talib now.

http://blogs.chron.com/fantasyfootball/2008/02/notes_from_the_combine.html

1. Cromartie
2. Brandon Alberts (as a OG only, not a project LT)
3. Talib
4. Harvey
5. Cason

Cromartie at this point and as we move foward is mostly a pipe dream. He shouldn't be looked at as an instant starter, but he would probably be forced to play before he is ready on our team. Still, everything is there in terms of potential.

Alberts is quite possibly my favorite player right now. This is an all pro OG waiting to be drafted. He will be a first rounder, so why not go back to the Oilers hay-days and take a OG with our first rounder. That ideology worked out, right? The only real knock on him is that he may be too tall to play OG, but he is athletic enough to slide outside to OT, but his stock drops if he is drafted as a LT IMO. His hand punch is amazing and he can really move in space. He mirrors well and can kick step properly.

Talib is NFL ready now. I'm not sure what pete was getting at, but Talib was the best defender in the Big 12 and an All-American. He started as a 2-star recruit with no legit offers except KU. He worked his way up to where he is and he has earned everything. He is the best tackling CB in the draft, bar none. He has a good quick burst and closes really well on the ball. Speaking of the ball, he just finds it. Talib finds the ball and makes a play on it. He has good hands and track record. He also happens to fit Rhodes scheme to a T.

Harvey impressed me with his bench press, and has always been pretty productive at Florida. He is a tremendous edge rusher, a natural if you will. He would be a perfect RDE, but he slips this far on my "who I want" list because of positional needs elsewhere.

Cason is another experienced CB who can come in and start day 1 and also happens to fit the scheme we run perfectly. His run support isn't the greatest, but it is adequate, certainly no P Buc. He isn't a burner, but he has good enough size and speed, coupled with ball skills to make him a very viable option for our team.

Brandon Albert Needs to Play Tackle

Virginia OG Brandon Albert shows great feet on film but that is only one of the reasons why he might end up at tackle. From what I've been told, he simply played better as a tackle rather than a guard and his strength level isn't what it needs to be in order to play guard in the NFL. Some pundits are jumping on the Albert Train like no other but in reality, he's probably the 5th best tackle in this draft just ahead of Sam Baker.

I do not know off the top of my head, but what other Guards have made the transition to Tackle straight out of college. This is not a gotcha, but a dialogue starter.

worth some research, how many guards are 6070 315 with athletic builds who are ideal fits for ZBS :specnatz:

Like I said, he has the physical attributes to play OT in the league, but he is a project, and his stock definitely falls to 3rd rounder if he is to be drafted strictly as a LT. He has very long arms which helps alleviate the majority of the concerns about his strength. He has big hands and moves his feet well laterally while keeping his upper body square and mirroring the defender. Alberts also stated that he is more comfortable and would prefer to remain at OG, essentially telling me that he understands his bread and butter. He engages quickly and has very strong hands not often seen from OG's. Most OG's have shorter arms and require immense upper body strength to withstand the massive NFL DT's. However, that is not the case with Alberts, and I will argue against Lance on this one.

On a side note, getting my hands his game film was a little tricker than I anticipated. You wouldn't think that with Long being on the same team, but I had a time of it.

That's a tough one. Bruce Matthews came out of USC as a Guard, moved to Tackle for a period, then to Center. John St. Clair came out of Virginia as a Center, then moved to Tackle. So did the Vikings' Ryan Cook. Usually, it's the college Tackles making the conversion to Guard.

This is a good question. Mostly, we hear of college OT's sliding inside to a OG spot as opposed to a college OG bumping outside to a OT spot. I guess Spencer is a name that should immediately pop into our heads.

Beat me to it. Good knowledge. That deserves some rep for at least knowing those guys.

I like Albert a lot. I think with our current Guard situation, if we were to draft him- he'd be one of our starting guards. I'd trust Kubiak and Gibbs at leaving him there or slowly grooming him to switch to Left Tackle when Salaam doesn't get it done anymore. May still be some hopes that Frye gets developed into that roll in another year or two.

I don't know if learning to play Guard in the NFL and also learning about the LT position at the same time is too much to handle though- could be.

I'd presume more Guards have transitioned to LT than TE's have.

I'm behind you with this. I think Albert could get drafted, play guard for a few years, and then possibly slide out to a tackle position if he really looks like he's ready.

But I'm wary of this guy. I think he could be good in the 2nd round, but right now, I don't know if I'd give up the 18 for this kid. Has a lot of good hype around him, but he also had the benefit of being on the same line as Jake Long, which can considerably help you out.

Albert isn't on the same line as Jake Long. Jake Long plays at Michigan. Maybe your thinking of Chris Long, who goes to Virginia with Albert? Chris plays on the Dline.
