Food for thought as we wait for draft day

I found this pretty interesting. Hindsight being what it is, it's easy to wonder just what some teams were thinking when they drafted a certain player at a particular spot.
Looking at this information, would you change your mind on drafting a particular player/position in this years draft, feel that YOUR ideal pick for our 1st round spot is the best player or simply hope we draft the BPA?

I think that we have missed on only 2 players in round #1 David Carr & Jason Babin the rest have worked out well and it looked like david carr was going to work out but I think all of the hits took a a toll.

Travis Johnson too, IMO

Word out of Falcon's headquarters, as published in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, is that they are seriously wanting to make roster cuts on some of their high-priced players. Among the players that will just be cut loose if that's the direction owner Arthur Blank decides to go in are: RB Warrick Dunn, LB Keith Brooking, WR Joe Horn, OT Wayne Gandy, DT Rod Coleman and TE Alge Crumpler could all be looking for a new team very soon. The Falcons are wanting to free up at least $23 million in salary-cap space. He's going to ask his top players to take a pay cut, but it's unlikely they will and so they will all be standing in the unemployment line waiting for a team to call.

I wonder if the Texans would have interest in any of those players. Rod Coleman would seem like he could compete for a starting job. And I'd love to get Alge Crumpler. I know we have Owen Daniels, but imagine if we could line up two good receiving tight ends? Probably not that realistic, but I can dream!

I'd rather have Keith Brooking.

I think he has played all 3 LB positions in his career.

Isn't Wayne Gandy a ZBS OT? and didn't he work with Gibbs in the ATL? You think he might wanna come work with him again?

Would love to have Alge and Brooking, too. AFC would be completely stacked at TE. XD

2002: Julius Peppers DE
2003: Andre Johnson WR
2004: Dunta Robinson CB
2005: Jammal Brown LT
2006: Mario Williams DE
2007: Too soon to tell (Either Amobi or Patrick Willis)

Keith Brooking would look GREAT in a Texans Uni.

I like Owen but..... Crumpler > Daneils

I think the Texans will probably have some interest but he turns 37 tomorrow. He'd be nice as a backup but I don't think he's a starter anymore.

The hits he took is because he held on to the ball too long. So in essence, he was bad from the get go and not becasue of the hits.

Not last season.

Looks like Crumpler needs a running QB to be successful. With Vick, he was the first read on every pass play.

But with a pocket passer, he is the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th read on most plays & he just cant stay open that long.

I wonder how much his off year had to do with the Falcons having a bad team with multiple QBs starting during the season

Obviously that was part of the reason.

But if you watched any Falcons games you would see how bad Crumpler looked.

He has to be the best receiver on that team, but he isnt even getting looked at.

Why is that? Because he could not get open on anything deeper than a quick route.

At QB last year he had Redmen, Leftwich and Harrington aka The Three Amigos.

I think it's safe to say he needs an NFL QB to be successful.

You know as a toddler my uncle told me if I stuck my finger in the light socket, I'd get shocked. Hard head that I was....it took a couple of times getting zapped before his advise took.

Quit taking players on the backside hump of their careers. It doesn't work and the only thing they get you is into cap hell.

Marginal article by a marginal bloger. Yeah the loss of twoes tends to come back and haunt you if the prospect you are chasing turns out to be sheeet. We got it.

The draft is an art not a science. You can be beguiled by the numbers and be wrong. Conversly you can be beguiled by the film and be wrong.

I think the worse thing the Falcons could do is take the QB with their first round pick. History says, at best, it is a fifty fifty propersition. And there is no doubt this year...Cornerback is the Texans greatest need. Even if it means they must sacrifice the guy they just spent two twoes on to get one.

Not always.

Sometimes vets like that come in and add a lot to your team.

Look at the Patriots.

Prove me wrong. That's what I saw when I watched Atlanta.

He had a down year according to his standards, but if you want to look past the total situation in ATL and say he doesn't have it anymore, then be my guest...

His avg yards per catch was right in line with the rest of the TE's in the AFC...I think he averaged about 10.5 and the leader (Witten) avg'd about 12...

Look at the video on his stats page and you'll see that he catches that TD on a cornerback...Me thinks he can get open on more than just "quick routes"...

But hey...nothing wrong with disagreeing...

We have this unreasonable fear of bringing in older players. I thought the 2-14 season taught us something about young players without a mix of vets.

For a season in which Alge played in only 14 games starting only 10 of them that's not bad numbers. I'm not saying come in and expect superstar stats.

I'm sure a lot of people thought Randy Moss was on the backside of his career prior to this year.

Brooking didn't have a terrible year himself. I don't think anyone also is wanting him to come in and play MLB. He's played several spots. If he is cut I'd expect the Saints to give him a look. They need LB help terribly and to take him away from ATL would be a bonus.

RBs are one thing once they hit 30. It's a beating intensive spot.

We're out of salary cap hell and I am sure RS has that under control and we won't see the bloated FA contracts we used to hand out like Candy. At the same time I don't think RS would be opposed to bringing someone who can raise the talent level of this team for a fair price. I know that's a drum you've been banging. The lack of Overall Talent on this team.

Of course far as ATL goes these cuts are speculatory. I'm interested in if some of those names really want to stick around for the complete overhauling of a franchise.

Coleman plays the under tackle, as does Okoye. If the Texans ran more double TE sets, maybe Crumpler would be a good fit. But, he'd be superfluous on this roster. I'd like to see more of Dreessen, actually. Brooking is getting long in the tooth and slower. Strictly a MLB, now. Dunn is an interesting change of pace guy, but how may 30+ year old RBs can a team carry? Gandy is a stopgap LT with maybe a year left. Maybe. Basically, none of these soon to be ex-Falcons are a good fit with the Texans. Maybe the Texans aren't Super Bowl contenders, yet. But, I think they're past the point of taking a bunch of Falcon rejects.

I say pick up Warrick Dunn for a year or two if the Falcons let him go and if we can't find a better FA. I know Ahman wasn't good last year, but that doesn't mean we can't get some good production from Warrick. Crumpler would be a good pickup, but I just don't know if we would pay as high as he will probably want.

Is Atlanta getting rid of Dunn? If so, any prospective Texans move makes sense as long as its not for huge money and long term. Crumpler is a luxury pick. We can't afford those types right now but Dunn could work. The familiarity would help both with Gibbs and even Schaub to some extent.

If Atlanta loses Crumpler and Dunn that is pretty damn sad for Falcons fan. They better hope that McFadden falls to them because he is what that team needs. SEC Product and someone they can hang their hat on.

I agree with you on both points about McFadden and Dunn.

Atlanta needs some playmakers on offense. McFadden fits right in there with Norwood. Norwood is like a taller Felix Jones.

If we were to pick up Dunn we would need to drop Ronny or Ahman.

Norwood is faster too. Kid has blazing speed.

I would vote Ahman at this point. Dunn is like a slightly better version of Green, IMO, so we wouldnt need him. We could keep Dayne & just let him do what he's been doing.

Ron Dayne scares me because 1) he needs perfect blocking to pick up 5+ yards 2) he injures people when he falls down. It sounds goofy, but the guy just falls over onto his own players legs when trying to fall forward.

If it comes down to a decision to keep Ron or Ahman, who do you want ?

Ahman. Dayne signed a one year deal. Green has 2 years left anyway. Dayne just really isn't the kind of guy you can insert into the lineup for a spark. Got to feed him the ball.

Green can also pick up blitzes.

Ahman still has contract money coming off the table, Dayne can be set free, for free :)

Interesting.

Lots of things to think about.

Ahman barley played last season, and I don't really see him becoming more healthy...no matter how much yoga and pilates he claims to do...

Ron has been fairly consistent.

I think Ahman is definitely the more talented one, but if it came down to one or the other I'm not sure who I'd roll with...

Considering all factors, Ron would have to clearly be the better back for me to keep him over Ahman.

Well from what I'm seeing so far is they are getting dumped by teams like the gurl with a fresh canker sore

At twenty three million, we are not only not out of cap hell, they are still bailing water. We're in the middle of the pack as far as availble cap space is concerned. What are you going to do with Weaver and our other platoon "other" defenive ends ?

Miami just dumped a coven of them...

One last point every time you stick your finger into the socket...there is a finite upside to the thity line players. That's two to three years your guy at the end of his career is sucking up a roster spot from a young guy.

And just which thity line players the Texans have swallowed the hook on has worked out for them so far ? Over all tallent is good. Scraping by with thrity somethings all over your roster pluging black holes...bad. I'll tell you something else... a good team would already have the gaurd canidate to replace Pitts with on the roster....now. Instead they are going to have to draft for critical need. Unless there is another Spencer diamond in the rough...gaurd isn't on the list this draft. Like I posted before...it's like a train wreck. You hear the sreaching of the rail cars going off the tracks and their is nothing you can do about it.

Every year they are patching the holes and not building. Taking guys over thirty is patching. They have no upside and no matter how cap friendly the contract...you end up, at least the Texans have so far, sucking the big one in the end. Walker, Weaver....Green. How many more scenarios do you need to see play out there ? Throw Brookings on to the pile and I can already see the train a 'coming. Rollin round the bend....

When the Texans break their trends, that is when we will finally be over the hump and on the way to being a legitmate contender.
