round 1: Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Illinois

Darius Walker has been solid coming out of the backfield, and Ahman Green and Ron Dayne are both on the roster, but are any of them really the guy whom Houston can ride into the playoffs? The Texans need to address the running back situation, especially considering the plethora of talent at the position in this class.

Don't count out a corner like Antoine Cason or Aqib Talib here; the Texans have done everything in their power to take down the Colts ever since they came into the NFL, and a top-notch corner would certainly help. However, the need for a premier running back is too paramount to ignore.

a franchise RB. wonder how many Mendenhall jerseys would be sold?

round 3: Erin Henderson, OLB, Maryland

The Texans have spent a lot of time fixing their front four the past few years, but now it's time to take care of the back seven. Morlon Greenwood's not exactly the best weakside linebacker in the league, and Houston could use a dynamic player like Erin Henderson on its defense.

round 4: Charles Godfrey, CB, Iowa

Everything the Texans have done over the past few offseasons has been to beat the Colts. Yet, Indianapolis clobbered them recently, establishing a 38-7 lead before taking its starters out. Houston desperately needs to address its secondary.

Check him out in the Senior Bowl, impressive 4th rd. pick @ need position.
 
I like this guys website, I think he does an excellent job. I would be quite happy with this draft.
 
Not only do I like his work for the Texans but he is one of the only guys i've seen that is saying what I've said all along for the Cowboys...WR and CB in the 1st...not RB...and then RB in the 2nd. I like his explanations on #1 and along the board. It shows he went through the process and didn't just look at the roster and throw a WR the Texans way.
 
I wouldn't be upset with it, but I'd prefer Dan Connor in the first to really beef up the defense and put a stamp on the front seven....He'd give us a lot of versatility both in run support and in the passing game....I'd go RB in the third..plenty good backs should be there...Corner in the fourth, another DB of any kind in the fifth...

I think we have O-linemen. Whether we have to move Pitts to tackle, or whatever, I think we have a lot of young guys that we have brought in that deserve the chance. We have a few guys who can play LT for us next year...Pitts, Salaam, Frye, Butler, Don't count out Spencer...I dunno, but I just think that with the addition of Gibbs it's more likely RB's and OL will be coached up rather than paid big bucks for...

Of course free agency changes things.
 
Wonder how mocks change if Patriots make nice with Samuel and re-sign the disgruntled corner? Other upset free agents have gone back to the original team despite ugly words. Who would N.E. be interested in then for first round?

That alone could re-shuffle the board below them.
 
This cracked me up.

74. Carolina Panthers: John David Booty, QB, USC
Jake Delhomme's always hurt, David Carr is the worst signal caller the NFL has ever seen, and Vinny Testaverde is wearing adult diapers. Matt Moore has looked solid, but I'm not sure if he's the long-term answer. The Panthers could be hunting for a new quarterback in the first three rounds of this draft.


I like the first pick but dont know enough about the LB to comment. And I thought Godfrey was a cover 2 guy.

Interesting thing is if you select Matt McGuire's mock at the top of that page he's got Henderson going in the 1st round...quite a difference in the two takes.

27. New York Giants: Erin Henderson, OLB, Maryland
The Giants like physical, rangy linebackers. Erin Henderson seems like the kind of player they would go for if he performs well at the Combine, showing good lateral movement, speed and strength.

if the Texans draft LT with a high pick they're gonna attempt to execute a trade down to maximize value. this Mock is without trades, which will change team selections, but not bpa which should remain constant among positions. don't forget about free agency too....hiring Gibbs really affects evaulating zbs prospects adding an elite downhill RB & shoring up defensive weakness seems pretty practical to me :)

Think they could ask to trade up to our 18 spot? It was our second round pick to begin with. Why not negotiate to send it back and get a first round pick.

Personally, if I was the Falcons GM, I would keep the picks I have and make solid selections based on the best player. They have picks at #3-5, early second round #37, mid second round #48, early third round #68.

You could build a great draft class with these picks before the 4th round even starts.

the Texans trade down #18 (900) & #144 (worth 66 4th rd) for two 2nds via Atlanta #37 (540) #48 (430).

Atlanta selects the top QB & then a tackle to protect his blind side, use the extra 4th rd. pick on a RB. Meanwhile the Texans take best cb available & best rb available or maybe if a 1st rd. quality tackle if he slips out of the 1st rd.

Unless you know something I don't better list Denver in the hunt for an OLT. their's just retired...what's his name ? Spend sixty million on the QB and then not take the replacement for the blind side ? I dunno bout that one. Lepsis.... the protege of Gibbs who was a TE at Colorado.

But, do you think it is worth it for the Falcons? They have 3 picks in the top 50 and 4 in the top 75. Would you give up #37 and #48 to get up to #18?

They'd have to really like a particular player.

I think if Brohm dropped to 18 then they would have to at least try it.

I don't know. Texans selected a QB 1st round and paid a lot of money and did not protect him from left. Then we traded two 2nd rounds for another QB and....maybe just maybe Denver is taking a peek at our play book?
 
I dont like a RB in the 1st with all the depth at the position. You can get great value in the 3rd-5th range. I would rather have Oline, OLB or CB in the first. Or maybe FS.

The lesson should be learned not to repeat that mistake. Everything I've read they like Jay Cutler. I can't believe they will set him up like that. Been a while since they went heavy with the o-line.
 
Given the board, I like the first round pick, Rashard Mendenhall (RB Illinois 5’11 224 lbs).

The best tackle left on the board is Jeff Otah, who is considered by most scouts to be a right tackle with the possibility of being a left tackle. According to NFL Draft Countdown.com, Otah has trouble with the speed rush and with Dwight Freeney in our conference, we may want to pass on him.

If USC OT Sam Baker or one of the CBs should fall, I’d take them over Rashard. What can I say but you can never have too many CB & the injury to Robinson may take a full year to heal (the logic being to double the estimate given to us by the Texans who are saying November of next year). According to reports, Sam Baker is have a pretty good week at the Senior Bowl practices (North squad):
• (Tuesday's practice) USC offensive tackle Sam Baker displayed good use of his hands and nice footwork. He especially stood out in pass protection against speed rushers.
• (Thursday's practice) USC offensive tackle Sam Baker has nice feet and balance. Today in 1-on-1's he was real calm and in control and basically made it look easy.

In the third round, I'd rather we took either of the two safeties still on the board, Craig Steltz from LSU or Tom Zbikowski from Notre Dame. Both appear to be cut from the same mold. I think most folks on this message board know about Steltz but Zibowske is having some pretty good practices leading up to the Senior Bowl.
• (Tuesday's practice) Notre Dame safety Tom Zbikowski laid a big hit on Justin Forsett toward the end of practice.
• (Wednesday's practice) Notre Dame safety Tom Zbikowski looked smooth in coverage and did a nice job on the tight ends. Maybe he isn't as one-dimensional as everyone thinks...
• (Thursday's practice) Defensive backs Tracy Porter of Indiana and Tim Zbikowski of Notre Dame displayed terrific hands and ball skills in drills today.

I can't argue with the fourth round pick. If Godfrey is still around in the 4th, run (don't walk) to the stage pick him then laugh all the way back to Houston.
 
I love Walters site and have emailed him many times about the Texans taking a RB and I dont agree with his pick. I have to fight over it with him each week that the Texans need a CB/LT

Zibbi has a problem with biting on play action and sometimes goes for the big hit versus the sure tackle.

I know that some people just absolutely love Zbikowski, but he is one of those guys that I just absolutely dont want in our secondary.

I just dont trust him.

I can honestly tell you that there were a lot of Notre Dame fans who were very disappointed in his performance this year.
 
I don't think Steltz would be a good addition. We have enough SS candidates. We need a ballhawking FS. Demps did pretty well for us at FS but we can't put all our eggs in that basket. I believe he is FA and he has had injury concerns.

One thing I hear is that Jamaal Charles is moving up a lot of boards....not surprised at all.

If Jonathan Stewart a possible franchise RB is available at #18, you pass? There will be no franchise type player any any other position available at 18 that we need. I would not let that type player get away just because I get a good player in later rounds.
 
I would rather have Stewart over Mendenhall, but have a S/CB before either of them this yeart. There is a lot of depth in this years RB draft.

I can live with the pick of Mendenhall, he has been my #2 RB since mid season, when I started looking harder at the draft. With the hiring of Gibbs, anything the team does with the OL would not surprise, so the taking or the passing on Otah or Williams would not surprise.

Heck the taking of Campbell to create one of the most athletic DL in the league would not surprise.

So a trade down would be huge for use, but since there is not any in this mock, Mendenhall would solidify the young RB that we need, look out Green, Taylor and Walker, one of you will not get a roster spot in December. (Dayne is safe with this pick).

Our 3rd round pick, Erin Henderson, younger brother of E.J., and a tackling machine with two season of over 100 tackles. Considered by Mayock to the 3rd best OLB in the draft. I am not going to argue with this pick. Just want to say I would have also considered John Greco, Trae Williams, Ezra Butler, Philip Wheeler, Duane Brown, Ahtyba Rubin, Harry Douglas, Quintin Demps, Tavares Gooden, Patrick Lee, DaJuan Morgan. Maybe a trade down would not be so bad.

4th rounder Charles Godfrey, another value pick. Solid player could be converted to FS.

Solid mock and I would not complain to much with it. And it points out this is not a good draft to be without a 2nd rounder. A couple of trade downs adding picks in the 2nd to 4th rounds would help this team alot.
 
I love everything about that draft, especially the Mendenhall grab.

I say we can pickup a decent LT in free agency.

I wouldn't be upset with drafting Mendenhall or Stewart in the 1st...whichever Kubes likes better. I think both could be franchise RB's.

But with the outlook of a franchise LT not looking too good at #18, I keep leaning more and more to a top CB.

Leodis McKelvin is shooting up the boards and from what I hear would be a perfect fit for our defensive secondary. Could end up being the 1st CB taken and there are plenty of Pats fans that want him at #7.

Additionally there's Antoine Cason and Mike Jenkins. I hear mixed things on Cason that he's more suited for zone but then I hear he's real good at playing Man. Lots of people like Jenkins a lot too and could be a good fit for our defense. (?)

I get the feeling 1 of these guys has got to be available at 18...but who and would we want him? The more I look at the teams in front of us the scarier it gets if you want a CB/FS: New England, New Orleans, Arizona, Detroit, Minnesota just to name a few.

Additionally, I'm starting to get a bad feeling that our starting Left Tackle is already on the roster somewhere, at least for the start of the season. As of 1/25/08, I'm thinking one of those RB's except I love how deep this draft is, A Corner Back, or they may surprise us with an OLB! I could def. be in favor of a trade down as I always am. I can see Gibbs/Kubiak getting 2-3 OL in the draft.. possibly 3rd rd for a guy that plays some this year-hopefully LT. I think they could find some later round guys to groom too. I don't see us getting a LT in Free Agency at all.

Have to agree with Bah, here. If McKelvin is there we take him, but I doubt that so we will probably end up taking Stewart which is fine by me. I think it's too high to take Talib and I'm not really sure on Jenkins. I like Stewart, but I feel that we need to go defensive backfield or Oline first.

Agreed: they have SS stacked like cord wood....unles he blows Hoke & Smith there is no way this happen.
