Pre-End of Season Mock Draft

Hall of Fame
1, Miami 1-14 - Glenn Dorsey, DT LSU

no change even w/Parcells added to mix

2. St. Louis 3-12 - Chris Long, DE Virginia

still the best DE prospect in the draft. question is do they package a deal & send Steven Jackson packing if they covet McFadden?

3. NY Jets 3-12 - Darren McFadden, RB Arkansas

GM Tannenbaum would be in an excellent position here to trade down as several teams would want McFadden & feel comfortable with the RB tandem of Thomas Jones, Leon Washington & Cedric Houston.

4. Atlanta 3-12 - Matt Ryan, QB Boston College

take your choice from among the top 3 QB's in this draft, one will have to be chosen with Vick still unable to return.

5. Kansas City 4-11 - Ryan Clady, OT Boise State

have their choice of Tackles, Clady has more upside than Long & should be a steady starter from day one.

6. Oakland 4-11 - Calais Campbell, DE/DT Miami

I beleive when he receives his recommendation as a probable top 15 pick interest will increase around the league & his stock will rise.

7. Baltimore 4-11 - Jake Long, OT Michigan

Need pick, Ogdon may retire.

8. New England (via 49'ers 5-10) - James Laurinatas, ILB Ohio State

could always trade down if someone really wants one of the top two QB's & Bellichick has the luxury to address his aging defense with bpa.

9. Cinncinnati 6-9 - Chris Ellis, DE Virginia Tech

Athletic DL who can play RDE in a 4-3 or OLB in a 4-3. Maybe the most questionable top 10 pick but would give the Bengals defensive playmaker addressing need, the type of athletic end they had hoped Pollack would become prior to his career ending neck injury.

10. Denver 6-9 - Sedric Ellis, DT USC

Very good interior tackle with athletic ability to stop the run in the middle on a consistant basis @ altitude.

11. Carolina 6-9 - Brian Bhrom, QB Louisville

Jake Delhomme should be fully recovered so its an ideal time to draft the best QB prospect to deveolp. remember you need two quality QB's per team to be covered.

12. Chicago 6-9 - Andre Woodson, QB Kentucky

Big, physical prospect, very accurate. has played under tremendous pressure in the pocket yet still driven his team to some impressive victorys.

13. Arizona 7-8 - Kenny Phillips, S Miami

Earlier I had them selecting Gholston but their secondary simply is too great of need to bypass with the best impact Safety still on board.

14. New Orleans 7-8 - Malcolm Jenkins, CB Ohio State

Underclassman with all the tools to be a top cb.

15. Buffalo 7-8 - Vernon Gholston, DE Ohio State

Right now this pick would make me really nervous if I want Baker for the Texans, Buffalo could certainly address the OL but Gholston is excellent value & impact pass rusher adding more depth for a solid defense.

16. Houston 7-8 - Sam Baker, LT USC

Obviously some things have to happen for Baker to still be available here, the Texans could not of asked for a better situation. contray to popular belief Baker is not injury prone, he had off season surgery to remove some loose cartlidge in his knee (pretty common among linemen these days). What he gives the Texans is the most polished tackle coming out of college, excellent size, athletic abiltiy & use of proper technique. If gone Texans could always select bpa or address the tackle need with the next best LT prospect Jeff Otah.

17. Detroit 7-8 - Mike Jenkins, CB South Florida

Could very well wind up being this years version of Dunta Robinson, a true cover corner with exceptional athletic ability & speed to mirror receivers.

18. Philadelphia 7-8 - Jeff Otah, OT Pittsburgh

Big, physical, raw talent with tremndous upside. Eagles need to address their aging line.

19. Minnesota 8-7 - Reggie Smith, CB/S Oklahoma

The best tackling db in the draft, I feel he fits in with the Vikings @ Safety solidfying the secondary as a whole.

20. Washington 8-7 - Gosder Cherilus, OT Boston College

The next Hog. Wide body with prototypical linemen size with natural RT ability.

21. Tennessee 9-6 - Kelly Malcolm, WR Oklahoma

Big, fast target for VY. reminds me of last years #23 pick, Dwayne Bowe looks the part of a true NFL #! WR.

22. Dallas (via Browns 9-6) - DeSean Jackson, WR California

Add another offensive playmaker, may be somewhat in reaction to having another weapon against the Patriots in the Superbowl or just the fact Terrell Owens is not getting any younger, not to mention bpa.

23. Tampa Bay 9-6 - Rashard Mendenhall, RB Illinois

Another underclassman (coin toss right now if he enters the draft) but seems like a durable #1 RB if Cadillac comes back that would really help take the pressure off him & the running game in general. could also address OL here.

24. Seattle 10-5 - Roy Schuening, OG Oregon State

Still smarting from losing Steve Hutchinson (especially Alexander) I've noticed Seattle tends to take the local talent (NW) when given the choice, but should come down between him & OU Guard Duke Robinson. both are aggressive, physical future NFL road graders.

25. Pittsburgh 10-5 - Kirk Barton, LT Ohio State

Also have noticed the run on OL really heats up amonst the better teams, always trying to protect the jewels. Barton is a bit of a reach but fits everything the Steelers like & should be an excellent addtion to replacing some of the line they are sure to lose in FA.

26. San Diego 10-5 - Dan Connor, Penn State ILB
The Chargers are solid on the ends of their linebackers but could use some upgrade in the middle. Connor represents excellent value & need for the powder blue.

27. New York Giants 10-5 - Martin Rucker, TE Missouri

Persoenl pick, I really have been impressed with his game. watch and see how he does against Arkansas, another big game in prime time should propell him into the 1st rd. & frankly I'm not a big Shockey fan now with his broken tibia & Mannings reliance on throwing to the TE position underneath make this a more logical pick than some might think.

28. Jacksonville 11-4 - Mario Manningham, WR Michigan

This is a different kind of WR than they've been selectin lately, Mario is more about possession/route running in the mold of Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez, quick, smart & experienced.

29. Green Bay 12-3 - Antoine Cason, CB Arizona

The next best pure cover corner with return skills, keeps the defense loaded in the secondary.

30. San Francisco (via Colts 13-2) - Fili Moala, DT USC

I've heard he might come out, if he does he could certainly go earlier, excellent value if he's still here & the 49ers need help everywhere but a good place to start is one of the weakest points, the interior line.

31. Dallas 13-2 - Duke Robinson, OG Oklahoma

Duke is an outstanding underclassman guard. this is a best case scenero Draft for the Cowboys addressing the offense with talent for years to come. could address secondary via free agency.

New England 15-0 - see Roger Goodell

1, Miami 1-14 - Glenn Dorsey, DT LSU

no change even w/Parcells added to mix

Agreed

2. St. Louis 3-12 - Chris Long, DE Virginia

still the best DE prospect in the draft. question is do they package a deal & send Steven Jackson packing if they covet McFadden?

If he goes here, he can't go #9 to Cincy. Also, how does StL feel about Carriker?

3. NY Jets 3-12 - Darren McFadden, RB Arkansas

GM Tannenbaum would be in an excellent position here to trade down as several teams would want McFadden & feel comfortable with the RB tandem of Thomas Jones, Leon Washington & Cedric Houston.

I don't think the Jets would trade down in this scenario. I doubt they feel comfortable with Thomas Jones and Co. at RB, when someone of McFadden's caliber is available.

4. Atlanta 3-12 - Matt Ryan, QB Boston College

take your choice from among the top 3 QB's in this draft, one will have to be chosen with Vick still unable to return.

5. Kansas City 4-11 - Ryan Clady, OT Boise State

could always trade down if someone really wants one of the top two QB's & Bellichick has the luxury to address his aging defense with bpa.

9. Cinncinnati 6-9 - Chris Long, DE Virginia

DL & pass rush a priority. Chris Long is versatile enough to rush the QB from inside or outside the pocket.

see #2

10. Denver 6-9 - Sedric Ellis, DT USC

Very good interior tackle with athletic ability to stop the run in the middle on a consistant basis @ altitude.

11. Carolina 6-9 - Brian Bhrom, QB Louisville

If Baker lasts this long, I'd love it. Baker is the most polished tackle in the draft, IMO, and were it not for injury this year, we'd be talking about Baker as the first OL off the board.

17. Detroit 7-8 - Mike Jenkins, CB South Florida

Could very well wind up being this years version of Dunta Robinson, a true cover corner with exceptional athletic ability & speed to mirror receivers.

Just a few comments inline.

Chris Long is so good, he's drafted twice?

sorry about that in my rush to get it out before work I didn't have the time to proof read it

Chris Long of course plays for Virginia & is the top pass rushing DE in the draft. Chris Ellis plays for Virginia Tech & is more complete inside as well, something along the lines of Adam Carriker of the Rams drafted in the 1st last year & now plays DT.

I take it you had Talib staying for his senior year? I could see him going to the Vikings in your mock instead of Reggie Smith.

I like Baker and the skill set he brings to the table, but I don't know if he will go that high. Right now, I'm looking at him like a potential Eric Winston type draft stock. We all know his ability and potential, and where his talent would have him drafted. Winston was a top 20 player based on talent, but his knee injury raised some red flags to every team, and he dropped. I'm wondering if Baker will do the same once he gets into the medical review part of draft process.

your correct on Talib. you make some good points on Baker, but his procedure was taken as a precaution & never sustained a torn acl like Eric nor has he shown signs of affecting his lateral quickness or footwork in general is all rock solid, other than the hamstring he pulled but I don't think thats anything to worry about, if anything it drops him to the Texans draft spot so much the better & we'll finally have our franchise LT.

I really don't think Chris Long is going to go as high as some predict. I don't think he is going to freefall but as crazy as it sounds, I look for him to end up at Oakland following his father's footsteps at #6 overall.

i would shake the top 7 as:

1. Glenn Dorsey - Miami
2. Jake Long - St. Louis
3. Darren McFadden - NY Jets
4. Matt Ryan - Atlanta
5. Sam Baker - KC Chiefs
6. Chris Long - Oakland
7. Brian Brohm - Baltimore

i would shake the top 7 as:

2. Jake Long - St. Louis Jake Long is a top 10 pick but no Joe Thomas.
3. Darren McFadden - NY Jetsv yes
4. Matt Ryan - Atlanta
5. Sam Baker - KC Chiefs
6. Chris Long - Oakland
7. Brian Brohm - Baltimore

1. Glenn Dorsey is a great piece to build a defensive foundation with.
2. Jake Long is a top 10 pick but he is no Joe Thomas, I think St. Louis would be dissapointed if they used the #2 overall pick on him, think of Robert Gallery.
3. Darren McFadden what more do I have to say, bpa.
4. Matt Ryan has the leadership this organization needs but they'll have to address more offensive weapons & protection for him.
5. Sam Baker is better in pass protection than Long, while Long is better in drive blocking & sealing the edge on the run. Clady will have to grade out @ the combine & personel workouts given the offense he comes from. what I've seen he has the complete package to do both.
6. Chris Long won't last until the 6th pick he is far more polished than Jake Long, not to be confussed with Chris Ellis
7. Brian Brohm - possible, certainly worth the consideration but I don't think he has time to groom another QB & likes who he has just needs to address his protection.

1. Is'nt Dorsey the second coming of Russell Maryland ?

2. I think Long is a Bear , Steeler type OT .

3. Mcfadden .... every bit as good as Peterson without the injuries and more versitile .

4. I would not want to be looking for a QB in this draft .

5. Baker ... 1st thought he was injury prone , Beerlover says no . The Texans need a LT who is athletic enough for Freeney but strong and nasty enough for KVB and Spicer ... maybe we'll keep him for ourselves .

6. Chris Long ... Listed at 6'4 and 280 lbs so he's not the Simeon Rice or Kearse type player . He's is supposed to be a high motor guy who runs in the 4.7/4.8 range . Maybe what KVB is today ?

7. See #4

kinda slow around here lately so was just making an effort to infuse some draft discussion into the mix before the regular season ended. over the next couple weeks there is going to be plenty of football to evaluate your players as the draft selection order settles down. Introduced some new names (underclassman mostly) to keep an eye out for in the bowl games who I beleive have 1st rd. talent. to share with the rest of you moving forward so you can actually say you watched them play a game instead of just mirroring Mel Kiper & other assorted draft sites. last year I promised to keep a better week by week account of as much NFL talent as possible going into the 08 draft process. That said, Rick Smith shines with his second day picks & thats where the bulk of this team is built from, the high picks should be the cornerstones that these peices combine to make successful.

For this discussion I want to cover the possible linemen, since pretty much everyone is in agreement thats what the Texans need to address. I project two top 10 tackles (#5 Ryan Clady/#7 Jake Long) two top 20 tackles (#16 Sam Baker/#18 Jeff Otah) & two bottom of the 1st rd. tackles (#20 Gosder Cherilus/#25 Kirk Barton who pittsburgh would move to guard). thats a total of six possible OT's taken in the first rd. this year, thats above average in strength which is a good thing for the Texans. Checked the last three drafts & found these results, in 05 there where only two selected in the 1st rd. (#13 Jammal Brown & #19 Alex Barron) Logan Mankins #32 was taken by New England but moved to guard. in 06 #4 D'Brickashaw was the lone tackle selected in the first rd. 07 #3 Joe Thomas, #5 my man Levi Brown & #28 Joe Staley who winded up costing the 49'ers a Top 10 pick. anyway thats a total of 6 tackles taken in the past three years combined together to = the number of tackles who should go rd. one this year alone. timing is everything.

The second part without discussing individual merits of these players are the other linemen the guards/centers. the cream of the crop always seem to go late in the 1st every year to the championship teams/contenders, ever wonder why they always seem to do so well? 05 #26 Chris Spencer G/C Seattle, #32 Logan Mankins G New England. 06 #23 Davin Joseph Tampa Bay, #29 Nick Mangold Jets. 07 #29 Ben Grubbs Baltimore. so generally most years you get a couple late rd. picks added to teams OL rosters. this year is no different with two blue chip prospects (still waiting on Duke Robinson to declare his intentions) Seattle is deperate to fill the void left by Hutchinson, I have them selecting Oregon State guard Roy Schuening if Duke comes out its going to be a tough choice for them both will be excellent starting guards for some NFL team. overall the class is average with the center position down.

overall I feel this is a well balanced representation of the draft talent coming out going to teams that have needs in each area. of course nothing is ever perfect, it seems each week something changes. but hopefully this year the Texans can address the offensive line with their 1st pick, whatever it is, the second most likely position addressed given the talent around them when they select is CB. I have Mike Jenkins #17 & Reggie Smith #19. :)

dont buffalo have two good de's though: schobel and the other decent white guy lol (forget his name)..

oh snap! could we be faced with the prospect of having gholston in front of us as the BPA as well as a kind-of need player also? could we possibly go d-line again?!

It's possible, but I also think that we will be able to find a similar pass rushing end outside of the top 20. Harvey is a great example. Blake and Bruce Davis from UCLA are as well.

Kelsey & Schobel are nothing special with nothing much behind them. need a defensive playmaker from DE or CB. Reggie Smith could be another possiblity. ideal Kenny Phillips could fall into their laps & they could put him @ FS next to SS Whitner that would be pretty fearsome :shades:

shut up lol.. i want gholston:d:

work with me. seriously their D has been good anytime i watched them.. seems their O could do with an upgrade moreso, or even the secondary maybe

would any of them make it to the mid 3rd though, in your opinion?

It depends on Blake's weight and if his off the field issues are cleared up for sure. He is a first round talent, especially if he transitions to a 3-4 OLB. Harvey SHOULD stay in school, but right now he would be lucky to go mid 2nd, so he could easily slip. And Davis will be there.

playmakers are playmakers. defense or offense.

a really interesting player with tremendous ability, can impact @ WR & special teams that has slipped here to Dallas #22 DeSean Jackson should be a consideration for any team selecting #15 or higher in regards to bpa.
