YoungTexanFan's big board v1

This is my big board right now. This is not my Texans big board, this is just how I view each player in terms of talent in the ideal situation. This is a BPA type board. Again, this is not how my big board for the Texans looks, this is just how I see the top 80 prospects compared talent wise to each other.

This is my initial board. I will change it as we move along. I will review more tape, watch pro-days and combines, read more scouting reports, and get more gut feelings. This is also meant to educate some of the posters who will be asking "who is in the draft", or "who should we be looking at?" These are the guys you should pay attention to in bowl games if they are in one, and these are the guys you should read up on.

Has Brian Brohm declared for the draft? If not, is he leaning towards it? I'm hoping he does and just maybe Troy Smith will fall to the 2nd round if both Brohm and Russell enter.

Neither Brohm nor Russell have actually declared.

Brohm said he was leaning towards returning, then hinted otherwise more recently. I feel he is the top QB in the draft and the advisory board should see the same. I think he will enter. Russell is likely to enter and is riding some pretty big hype right now. Smith may fall, he may not. I could see a few teams taking him, but not the Texans.

At first for some reason, I thought you asked about Bain. I was kind of excited. I was ready to talk sleepers to someone. O well.

OK, what would make Broham a better QB selection than Russel?

He makes better decisions with the ball and has better touch. It is a close race no doubt though. I don't know who I would take at this point if I wanted a QB. I support Sage the most at this point as our QB next year.

Any other questions about my initial big board?

How is Troy Smith the 12th and 21st best prospect?

How is Frank Okam 56th and 78th? You think highly of him on odd numbered days and lowly on even?

6. Darrelle Revis, CB, Pittsburgh The best DB in the draft. Good size, good speed, good instincts. A true lock down CB. Shify and explosive. Makes good jumps on ball.
8. Antoine Cason, CB, Arizona Most athletic CB in draft and will push for 1st CB taken. Solid 4 year player in Pac 10.
14. Leon Hall, CB, Michigan Not amazing at one area, but solid across. Won't make the picks as much as break them up. Deceptive speed but not fast.

15. Daymeion Hughes, CB, California Instinctual CB who's stock will fall due to a slow timed speed. A play maker when the ball is in the air.
20. Marcus McCauley, CB, Fresno State Measurables guy who played piss poor this year. However, scouts still like him. He was avoided last year while teams threw at Richard Marshell who went 2nd round.
59. Fred Bennett, CB, South Carolina Another measurables guy who played poorly. He will probally rise due to size and speed, but I don't think highly of him.
80. Travarious Bain, CB, Hampton sleeper CB. good production and measurables. will rise up at pro day.

Thats how I rated the CB's for whoever asked.

YTF that is a good looking board, a couple of names I think you will be adding at some point is the LOT from Arkansas who blocked for (2) 1000 yd rushers, Tony Ugoh and the LOT from ND Ryan Harris. Also Timmeran the LB from LSU.

I would not be surprised if the Texans selected Antoine Cason with their 1st pick. It's in his genes.

revis is the best CB. he should be the 2nd fastest and 2nd biggest next to mccauley, but he has played much better, and shown better instincts. not to mention he can return kicks. cason and revis show similar ability, but revis' size gets him drafted ahead of him. cason's style reminds me of dunta, as both are a little undersized as far as bulk goes, but both are ready and willing to help against the run. however, this team is in desperate need of a big body at CB to match up with bigger receivers. cason may be a little more polished, but i like revis a bit more because of his size.

i was really for picking landry or nelson earlier, but im wondering how much a safety would help. we could really use a top corner to play alongside dunta. safety just seems to be a little more easy to address in the later rounds or free agency.

I thought about both. I was going to put Harris in the 70's but he is pretty much a ZBS OT and that limits his potential. If it were a Texans board I would have him much higher. He was on the bubble with the top 80. Ugoh almost made it as well. I've seen him ranked in the 60's by some, but I don't have him in my top 80. He was probally about 5 players away though.

Timmeran did not make my top 80.

you pretty much hit the nail on the head (is that the right expression?)

Revis is a big, physical, fast, instinctual CB who doubles as a top PR man. Cason is just as physically gifted, but is slightly smaller. McCaulley is the best measurables guy available but played like crap.

Agreed. Your board YTF you can do what you want... coupple of other nit picks...Baseball will hold back 16. Jeff Samardzija, WR, Notre Dame. He's gotta fish or cut bait on that the next three months. Same with the boxer.

Smith's size will knock down. If the Texans want to go tramping with Fran Tarkington, he's thier guy. They'll get a shot in the second on him.

Both MLB prospects will go in the first. Both have been highly productive. Both will go off the board in the first.

So will the top TE prospect. Miller.

McCauly's films, and I don't care what he runs at the combine, is going to knock him down into the second, maybe the third. Ahmad "Batman "Carrol will still be fresh in everyones minds. No one is going to reach on hm. The dude better go to every All star game he can and play like Ty Hill did last year. i.e. like the second coming of Fred Smoots if he wants a top 64 pick spent on him.

JMHO.

Both ND players are overrated, but I think a first round draft choice and money would lure anyone away from the ScRubs. He is garentued 3mil over like 5 years with the ScRubs. He has much more potential in the NFL and will play there.

I couldn't care less about the ND safty because I want no part of his bad angles and crappy play.

I know Miller will go higher, but I don't think he is that good. I think he will be a need pick as opposed to BPA.

You may be right about the MLB's. We shall see.

McCaulley may slip to the second due to porus play, but measurables will not let him fall past that. He played well last year if you studied the film on him and Richard Marshell. EVERYONE played poorly for Fresno St. this year, EVERYONE.

Miller does one thing Winslow JR.,Shockley and Davis does not. He is a blocking deamond. that'll move him up. He is the best TE at blocking in this class. He has very soft hands. He has an understanding of how to beat the Dungy two. Which means, because of his blocking, he can protect a glaring weakness on a lot of 8-8 clubs, the offensive left tackle. The guy will be worth his weight in gold to a lot of GMs.

Alan Branch 2nd rd. ytf? if he reads this he'll probably stay in school :sos: that and your obvious disdain for Brady Quinn the prospect list looks pretty complete, nice work :)

Alan Branch is not worth his projection. I find it VERY hard to justify taking a DT top 10. Unless I'm running a 3-4 and need that perfect fit at NT in which case I could see it happening, just not Branch. Quinn makes too many mistakes when it matters for me and not that many teams need a new QB right now. Quinn should fall but probally won't. He is like a combo of David Carr and Joey Harrington coming out.

I have other QB's and other DT's ahead of Quinn and Branch. I think both should fall.

I understand where your coming from, if Brohm & Russell both come out Quinn should be the 3rd rated QB, but with both Oakland & Detroit needing QB's its still possible Quinn goes top 10 Minnesota would make alot of sense to me well at least I can hope thus pushing down a better option for the Texans.

I agree with you almost 100% of the time but I don't see why you don't think Branch would be a top 10 pick if he comes out? 6-6 330 linemen who can also play DE which by the way does equate to a 4-3 DT thank you very much :ok: are very rare as 6-7 290 DE's see Mario Williams who was chosen ahead of Reggie Bush. Travis Johnson was just an average DT not even in the same class & he was chosen #16th overall, last year Broderick Bunkley #14th & #12 Ngata Haloti. from watching game tape & reading every scouting report Alan Branch is the highest rated DT (if he comes out this year) to come out in years, imo since John Henderson #9 to Jacksonville in 2002 :shades:

He will go high, but if I was GM, I don't look at him in the 1st round. Various reasons. I don't think he has Henderson potential. I think he is a clog, but not a stuffer or pennatrator. He is huge yes, but I don't see an extra 30 pounds and 4 inches helping Mario as opposed to a Red Bryant, Okoye, Harrell, or Mebane. I also can't advocate allotting top 10 money to another d-linemen. I know, TJ wasn't picked by this regime...but he is still here. His contract is still here. I wanted to pretty much punch C&C after that move, but we move on with TJ and his contract. I think Bunkly was a better 4-3 DT prospect for our team last year than Branch is this year.

I can see Detroit going with Quinn, mostly because they are an incompetant franchise and are doomed to top 15 picks year in and year out. I cannot, however, see Oakland going QB #1 with their FO. They are also a stupid franchise now, and it is a shame. They used to be the standard for many teams, but now are a joke. They will probally go CJ...which isn't a bad pick IMO. BPA and a position of soon to be need. It kind of just falls into place. I can't see Minny going QB...maybe Bohm if he comes out but I think they want to avoid Cullpepper 2.0 in Russell.

I just wanted to bump this up. This thread was started in January I believe. This is before any combine, all-star games, or pro-days. I don't want to brag too much, but this list looks pretty good after how things played out. I missed one a few guys sure, but I called a lot of guys falling way early.

Yep, it was pretty good. The only standouts I see are Brian Brohm (didn't enter draft) and Troy Smith at #12. Michael Bush would have been top 20 if he hadn't been out the whole year.

Ya, I missed one a few guys. I really liked Smith's deep ball, didn't think he would measure in at 5'10, and thought he would have a good bowl game. This was done new years eve. I also missed on the ND WR who's name I won't butcher this early. But I called Quinn and Branch falling well in advance too.

No offense. I am just giving another perpsective.

Your projection isn't so much about football knowledge as probably a little bit of reading comprehension and looking at the pundits big boards and tweaking things a bit. What did you that was so different from the published boards?

These draft board things are nothing more than the herd mentality of what scouts are talking about and then published by sports writers.

What I want to know is who are the draft picks that are not a bust in round 1and what draft picks are at steal in the later rounds.

You did a good exercise, albeit not really football related.

At the time I made this board, the pundits didn't agree with me one some stuff. Granted there is common thoughts and picks, stuff it's really hard to go against the grain on, but at this time, before the BCS Championship Game, my board was a lot closer than any experts at the same time. It was about evaluating prospects, and that is all I was trying to show by bumping it back up.
