Gaither in the Supplemental draft?

Errant Hothy

Hypermediocrity
http://www.draftdaddy.com/blog/blog.cfm

A source has told us that University of Maryland offensive tackle Jared Gaither is leaning towards entering the supplemental draft.

DD.com Comment: This news story has not been reported by the media, but we trust our source. It is no secret to anyone that follows college football closely that Gaither has struggled academically at Maryland. So, at the very least, we have to believe the talented Gaither is seriously thinking about jumping to N.F.L. We thank our source for the potential scope.

IF this is true we might actually have an interesting supplemental draft this year.

And another tid-bit from the same blog.

A source has informed us that Mark Washington of Texas State will enter the supplemental draft. He played defensive tackle at T.S.U., but played linebacker at Arizona State. He's ineligible for next season. He also says he's not a true defensive tackle but can play defensive end or linebacker. Washington is 6'3" and 250 pounds and says he runs a 4.51 40 yard dash.

I remember a couple posters on the old board RAVED about Gaither. I don't see us giving up any picks though, maybe second day but definitely not our first day picks.

call me a big huge *****, but wtf is the supplemental draft?

Supplemental Draft
In late summer, the NFL also holds a Supplemental Draft to accommodate players who did not enter the regular draft because they thought they still had academic eligibility to play college football. Draft order is determined by a weighted system that is divided into three groupings. First come the teams that had six or fewer wins last season, followed by non-playoff teams that had more than six wins, followed by the 12 playoff teams. In the supplemental draft, a team is not required to use any picks. Instead, if a team wants a player in the supplemental draft, they submit a "bid" to the Commissioner with the round they would pick that player. If no other team places a bid on that player at an earlier spot, the team is awarded the player and has to give up an equivalent pick in the following year's draft. (For example, RB Tony Hollings was taken by the Houston Texans in the second round of the Supplemental Draft in 2003; thus, in the 2004 NFL Draft, the Texans forfeited a second-round pick.)

The 1985 Supplemental Draft was particularly controversial. Bernie Kosar of the University of Miami earned his academic degree a year early but did not enter the regular draft that year. Rather than finish his eligibility at Miami, he entered into talks with his favorite team, the Cleveland Browns. They advised Kosar to delay his professional eligibility until after the regular draft. They then traded for the right to choose first in the Supplemental Draft. This angered many clubs, notably the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants, who had expressed interest in choosing him in that season's regular draft. Many of today's Supplemental Draft rules aim at preventing a recurrence of this incident.

As of 2006, players who enter the Supplemental Draft usually are graded as players who should be drafted at a later round, or who have college eligibility problems (poor academic or discipline issues). Only 34 players have been taken since the NFL instituted the Supplemental Draft in 1977.

From Wikpedia.

WOW, that will make it interesting, a premier CB and a premier OT in the supplemental draft. Both positions are ones that we could use help in, something to definately monitor, if it comes down to a second day pick I think I would jump on either.

How reasonable is it to think a "premier" player at any position will last until a second pick is used?
I am hopeful, but not very.

Once-promising Maryland offensive tackle Jared Gaither has been declared academically ineligible for the 2007 season, sources close to the situation said Wednesday.

An NFL scout, who was attending former Georgia cornerback Paul Oliver's workout in Athens, Ga., on Wednesday, said Gaither would be the most desirable player available if he enters the supplemental draft. Gaither didn't allow a sack in 11 games as a freshman at Maryland in 2005.

Not necessarily an endorsement, just FYI

Actually i think a third would probably the the highest i'd see either going. Keeping in mind at least after next year you'd get another full body of work to grade a player out. I would think after the Hollings Debacle this franchise would be wary of the Supplemental draft.

That said both prospects do seem intriguing for our team.

I agree. Tony had the stats (brief as they might have been). I am not opposed to using the S.draft as if you like the guy you can have him developing on your team under your coaches. Plus theoretically, the next year's pick should be lower as your team should be better. It is a gamble regardless.

thoughts on Chris Patrick. Seems this yahoo writer thinks we're a team who could use him.

"Other prospects could be ruled eligible for the supplemental draft, but most would be deemed long shots. For the most part, teams are reluctant to surrender an '08 draft pick. In addition, any prospect taken must fit into this year's rookie salary cap pool. As a result, I expect to see Oliver taken between rounds three or four and Patrick possibly taken with a late choice by someone like the Houston Texans, New York Giants, Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs or Oakland Raiders – each of whom could use a young tackle/guard at an inexpensive price tag."

I see no harm in throwing a late round pick on the table; probably 5th on. Worst case you spend a pick in which the player probably would not have made the team, but in this case you get to evaluate him the year before.

I don't want to ever see the Texans use a legimate draft slot on a supplemental draft selection ever again. does Tony Hollings ring any bells :heh:

Like I said in the Paul Oliver thread:

"I felt the sting of the Tony Hollings pick as much as everyone else, but we're not talking about a RB coming off a serious knee injury with only 4 starts to his credit here. Oliver was productive in college, was highly regarded, and even shut down the mighty Calvin Johnson. I think the Texans should at least do their due dilligence in taking a look at this guy. Our secondary is anything but a proven commodity."

You can sub Gaither's name for Oliver (except for the Calvin Johnson comment) and OL for secondary. You don't lose much if you think these players can make your team and offer a second day pick for them. You won't be getting a top teir player at that spot in the regular draft. Both these players were highly regarded going into next season and could contribute to areas of need on our team. Casserly should've been lambasted for giving up such a high pick to acquire Hollings (for the reasons mentioned above), but to use a day 2 pick on either of these players would not be as ridiculous. I think assuming the risk involved, a 5th would not be too much.

I wouldn't mind spending a 4-7rd pick on Gaither, in fact I'd be thrilled. I'm becoming more pessimistic by the day on Spencer's recovery. Gaither is believed to be a 1st day, possible 1 round pick next year, so I don't think it'd be a bad move on the Texans' part to take a gamble.

I hope its a 3rd at best. He's real young and his impact might not be made right away, but the loads of potential this kid has is there. Hopefully we can get him for a 3rd or 4th, especially with Spencer most likely looking at ending up on the PUP to start the year. I'm torn on the Supplimental draft after the Tony Hollings ordeal, but Gaither may be the one to make me think differently.

Here is an article about what he did at his workout

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2930513

"Scouts clocked Gaither, who checked in at 6-feet-8¾ and 324 pounds, at between 4.98 and 5.14 seconds in the 40-yard sprint. He posted a vertical jump of 31½ inches, a broad jump of 9 feet, 3 inches, a short shuttle of 4.49-4.53 seconds and a cone drill of 7.12-7.25 seconds. The short shuttle and cone drill are change-of-direction drills.

Of the 42 offensive linemen who ran the 40 at the combine in February, only four posted faster times than Gaither's. And only six of the 37 linemen who participated in the vertical jump recorded better efforts."

Gaither only completed 16 lifts of 225 lbs in the bench press. Fewer than every offensive linemen that participated in the combine bench press.

Gaither completed just 16-reps on the bench press, a poor number which was expected.
Gaither looks like a player who would help more in 2009 than 2007. It will be interesting to see who takes a chance on him and when. I'll guess Dallas (who has the Browns #1 in '08) with their own 1st round pick.

According to the above ESPN article his reps were hampered because he had injured his shoulder preparing for the workout earlier in the week. I think his status was just approved so he didn't get to prepare much. I'm not a fan of giving up picks for supplemental guys so we shall see since they said Atl and J'Ville were eyeing him.

The Atlanta mention is what caught my attention given they use ZBS as well.

The Falcons could bid with the '08 2nd round pick we gave up in the Schaub deal.

Petrino is supposedly looking at dumping the zone blocking scheme.

I just don't see him going above a 3rd round choice. If he drops into the fourth i'd think we could offer something for him but i think Frye is a good fit here to develop. The T out of Nebraska also might be more along the lines of what we'd be looking at and he could prolly be had for a 5th or 6th.

I still think Frye is a interesting prospect and honestly i'd prefer we'd stay away from the supplemental. As usual all eyes are on Spencer's knee.

I think you said a cotton pickin mouth full. Nice point on the Schaub second also. Atlanta, compliments of the MS deal has the ammo to pull the trigger. I look at Brandon Frye, and I haven't seen him block anyone yet on this level, looks to me to be the guy to take the baton from Flannery and McKinney. He's strong as an ox, he's smart and he's quick. That reads center to me. We'll see. YTF is sold of the guy for sure. I'm not so much so. If you're going to go prospect like this, I go the other way. Micheal Oher of Old Mss had some acedemic issuescoming out of highschool, but unlike Gaither, he met the struggle and challenge and worked him self into a ball player who could meet the acedemic requirements. Oher is not the athlete that Gaither is. And if you're spending a day one on the guy, Gaither, you're saying all of his troubles the last two years were an annomily. You're saying that you're prepaired to enter another Seth Wand period with the o-line. Won't hurt now . But it's going to sting like hades at the end of next April. If you hit ...you got a shot at a top ten o-line. If you miss, you get to read all of the bottom of the barrel articles we're seeing this summer for the next three to four years. No matter how good the mule is , if he don't take the bit he's prety worthless. No matter how good he looks if he won't pull the plow, the feild isn't going to get planted. We'll see if they push all of their '08 chips into the middle of the table this week.

Ah it's a bid....you send in a bid, the highest bid wins the palyer. Couple of teams have extra first and second, they can afford the gamble. The question is can the Texan's afford to out bid them ? Me I wouldn't send anything higher than a four...which means the odds are I'd miss out on the guy. If they know something more than we do about Spencer's knee they just may well push their chips in. We're due to hit one of these gambles.

Good points. I'm nervous about Gaither myself and i'm curious as to who will use the pick to acquire him. I think Atl could very well be the one seeingas how they're looking fora replacement in the next year or two at LT. Dallas is another place i'd be looking and Baltimore i beleive has one year left with Ogden.

I'm think this year we'll see more consistancy and it looks like at least at this point we won't have to throw anyone to the flames right away. That bodes well for us this year and next when we'll have cap room to play with and we'll have a few players developing.

My thoughts are this as well regaurding Schaub. ATl has used several high picks on receivers and have worked to acquire a few big names but sink into a black hole that is Vick's throwing ability. The few games Schaub starts and/or plays in suddenly you look like you have competant receiving corps. Vick has a top tier TE and some WR. We have a top tier WR and a young TE. If he can turn that offesne into something competant and successfully complete and sustain drives we have the makings of a true NFL offense this year.

Far as our line goes. I think we're good at our Guards and i really think Winston has a chance to solidfy our RT position. I'd prefer Flannigan come back healthy but i've give McKinney his due when he came in later in the year our line did look better at least far as run blocking goes. I am hopinga guy like Enoka Lucas has a good TC cause Hodge hasn't done anything. Shaky still at LT but Sallam at least held up for the better part of the year more so then i think anyone thought he could. Black seems a capable swing backup and i still think we'll see Spencer on the PUP list to start the year(hoping i'm wrong) but even then when will he be at full speed and ready to blow some people out of the gates again? I do think however, we got a leg up on the issue in a good blocker in Leach and an experienced back in Green who can pick up the blitz when needed could be essential to our offense.

Jared Gaither

Offensive Tackle | Junior | Maryland
Height: 6-8 3/4 | Weight: 324 | 40-Time: 5.06

Strengths:
Rare size and a huge frame with long arms...Extremely athletic...Has outstanding feet and moves well for a guy his dimensions...Very strong and powerful...Great balance and bends his knees well...Excellent pass blocker and an above average run blocker...Versatile with experience on the left and right side...Has the ability to play left tackle in the pros...The sky is really the limit when it comes to upside.

Weaknesses:
Intelligence, commitment and maturity are major question marks...Has only two years of Division I experience and started just 17 of 23 of those games...Playing time was limited in 2006 as he battled a neck injury and was suspended at one point...Is still very raw and he'll need a lot of work from a technique standpoint.

Notes:
Spent a year at Hargrave Military Academy after high school which is why he was able to enter the NFL despite being only a true sophomore...He was also a major D-I basketball recruit coming out of high school and actually committed to South Carolina for hoops before ultimately opting to play football...Burst onto the scene in '05 and didn't allow a sack all season long...Has the physical tools to be great but sub par intangibles could keep him from ever fulfilling his potential...A classic boom or bust type who'll either make you look like a genious or break your heart.
