Where's the poll?

I'm OK with it. You can't help but root for a guy like him. I wanted Nelson, Revis, Hall (DBs), but this is OK with me. The pressure is coming. :d:

i pray hes not gonna be a bust like you know who... but atleast this guys works in pract. unlike you know who... lol

GREAT PICK! A low center gravity DT who has a very quick burst & is powerful, when the ball is snap! SWEET! Now, I hope he doesn't go off speeding around with Mario around Houston......oh nevemind, Houstonians do this often, esp . on the freeways.:mail: :doot:

i do and dont. it's not a bad pick, but i wont call it a great one. a trade down would've been the only deal i really would've cheered as there werent any top 10 prospects available at the 10 spot and from all reports several teams were attempting to trade with houston. we've drafted defensive line in FOUR consecutive years now (babin, travis johnson, mario williams, amobi okoye) and spent big money last year also on anthony weaver. before the draft and definitely now, we have to make the most of what we have on that line ... kubiak has to claim these guys and build them, if they fail it's because coaching failed.

that being said, okoye has winner written all over him. what hasnt this kid excelled above and beyond at? that kind of brains and athleticism is extremely rare and is definitely something kubiak covets more than anything else. there's little doubt that okoye will make an immediate impact. one thing i worry about was mentioned on the NFL network - what's this kid going to look like when his body matures? 20-50lbs happens to almost every football player at okoye's age and is why many college players change positions between highschool and the end of college. not the best possible scenario, but far from being a bad pick.

Great pick. He is so young and will be a great player. I would have rather had Landry, but am not upset with this pick. Great job Texans organization.

Hmmm...well I wish you had an option for "LOVE IT"

Okoye was one of my favorite picks, if not him willis or revis. Glad to see Willis go to SF and not Buf and glad to see Revis get taken as the 1st CB like i thought he was!

okoye and mario will dominate. i don't expect him to come in day 1 and dominate, but he will grow into it. him and mario ...wow this is going to be great.

does anyone know if Travis johnson is going to turn the corner or do you think we can trade him!!!!????

Don't forget that as he continues to gain weight, he's also going to be growing taller. He's 6'-2" and weighs around 290-300lbs. right now. He'll continue to grow into his body. Who know's, four years from now, he could be close to 6'-4" with an extra 20lbs. of muscle at 310-315! I believe that's why the Texans chose him as BPA. They could have traded back but they got what they were looking for.

That would be amazing. He would be a beast!

I LOVE this pick! I would've traded down for anyone but Peterson or Okoye. I'm still pissed that Minnesota took Peterson. What worse place could he have gone (except for maybe Cleveland) that would've destroyed his career? He's going to tank there - that team sucks.

GO OKOYE!

very possible, but anything over an inch after 19 is probably a stretch. my only fear is that he ends up 6'3" and 355lbs (he's over 300 already). as you said ... who knows, we have some of the best facilities and training staff, he could grow a full 2" and hover at 305-315lbs his whole career here.

I think it is an excellent pick. He is smart, works hard, and seems to excel in whatever he sets his mind to. I think he will fit in quite well. He should make a big impact and give Mario some breathing room. Our defense should be absolutely awesome.

Since defense wins championships - I'm ready for a championship season!

There's been a few guys that have been called busts around here.

If he's talking about Travis Johnson, I'd be inclined to agree. If he's talking about Mario Williams, then I wouldn't.

I agree. The Travis Johnson pick is a bust. Mario Williams isn't. Mario played with an injured foot all season.

Since offseason began, I have been a broken record crying out for the ability to stop the run. It's part two of my diatribe on how to win next year. Part one was being able to run the ball. Hopefully, the Green signing will fix that. As much as I wanted Kalil, AP, and Landry, I really like this pick. The Texans needed a DT more than we want to believe...

You're right. I didnt realize that the Texans allowed 5 yards per rush last season. Whoa.

i'm as displeased with travis johnson as everyone else, but IMO you cant really call him a bust yet (although i'm sure i've hollered it at some point). he's only played two seasons, and has been injured for a good portion of that. in those two years he's played under 2 different head coaches, 2 defensive coordinators, in both a 3-4 and 4-3 defense, and hasnt had any consistancy or production around him. sure those are excuses, but it's hard to realistically ask for probowl production in those circumstances. this year is where i'm more willing to call for him being released or not. and yes i've diagnosed his individual play, and while it's not good, he definitely has shown flashes.

I think that somethings are being overlooked .

1. I think the way the draft evolved ... that moving back from 8 to 10 was'nt a big thing because AD , Landry , and Levi Brown were all gone .

2. Okoye was the best player on the board at that point .... Okoye also has a high ceiling because of his age . Okoye will be 20 and I think Mario is 22 .

I think we need to trade him actually. Him or Babin. We have a lot of players for our D-Line. It provides depth, but at least one can be dumped or traded.

I'll give Babin one more year. Okoye will not only help Mario out but he will also help out the entire DL. DeMeco should be happy as well. If Babin doesn't produce, then it's time to part ways.

Babin had some of the best pass-rush numbers (sacks, to be specific) last year. I'm not ready to see him gone. However, I'm ready to see him step up. There is no reason he should not be one of the best pass-rushing defensive ends in the league. He should be playing every down. If he's not, then it's time to send him sailing.

And this year the Texans get to play against LJ, LT, New Orleans, and a basic list of the best running backs in the league. Without a run defense, they are sunk.

we're definitely going to be one of the youngest defenses (if not the youngest) ... hell just look at the line. mario 21, okoye 19, babin 26, TJ 25, weaver 26. then you've got dunta 25, brown 24, earl 25, faggins 27, ryans 22, orr 25, and old man greenwood 28. we need to upgrade talent at linebacker and free safety, but there's plenty youth and athleticism available to be coached. we need to start working this direction on offense now.

I apologize but I voted no to this poll by accident I wanted to do yes. Is there a way we can correct the poll or something? Just went to fast and clicked and it was over in a split second.

That DL looks good like that on paper, and I can't wait to see what it will look like on the field. The Texans are finally starting to build their identity and it's through Defense. :texflag:

i'll vote yes for ya. i'm on the fence so i wasnt going to vote.

IF we are able to put pressure on QBs, our DBs will have less pressure on them. I'm fine with the pick. I didn't expect it, but we could have a fierce D next season.

Thanks Scooter although I shot an email to TexMex about a correction. I'll be more careful on those poll selections next time. I'm ecstatic about Okoye I know I had some other selections @10 who were available but the traders did not give up enough to trade this BPA. THe DL will make the rest look better and we still have more picks to come and other things before June 1st.

it looks insane on paper. between injuries, inconsistancies in the coaching & management & scheme, and rotating personnel ... we havent touched on the extent of what our current line can accomplish and hell we might not see the full effect of things until 2008. remember, kubiak and smith are only sophmores ... 08 is going to probably be the first offseason where we go into the season with a fair amount of familiarity. this year should give us a very good indicator as to what our defense of the future is capable of.

edit: no worries texanborn, happens all the time.

I like this pick. You always build a winning team around your linemen on both sides of the ball. Our defense is starting to shape up. With Mario playing on good feet, our outstanding Defensive Rookie of the Year, and now this guy. If we can somehow manage to get a good CB to pair up with Daunte, we'll be in good shape.

As has been said many times, the Texans have so many serious holes to fill anyway, but at least things are starting to look pretty sweet on the D line. Baring injuries, I forsee a very huge turn around in our defensive play this year.

One thing I do want to say is this better be it. No more DLs in the first round for a while. I mean I'm OK with the pick, because I really like this guy, but this is the fourth year in a row counting Babin, and we also have a lot of money tied up in Weaver as well. Not to complain too much, but I still wish we'd taken Nelson or Revis.

Fact is they're never gonna take exactly the guy I want, so I'm OK with this.

First think I thought when I saw Okoye's family all excited was that they were anticipating it, probably saying, "Houston'll take you, Okoye! They always take a DL in the first round." I like him, but that kind of bugs me.

Trade both as far as I'm concerned. TJ barely made the team last year and is definetly a bust.

I think Okoye a solid pick. Okoye has excelled at everything he's done. I would have preferred us to trade down, but that's not always possible. Of the people on the board, I can't see anyone who would have been an obvious choice as a better pick.

I admit I was in the Levi camp or wanted to trade down, but I will not complain and I will trust Smith and Kubick with this pick and say I love it.

June 1st bye bye TJ

I'm torn. After reading the ESPN article a few weeks back I came to really respect this young man. I have no problem with the pick in general. I think he is a solid pick and a value for where we got him. However, I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I was intrigued with how many of our competitors did well, IMHO, and that, after seeing what people were getting in trades, that we didn't move down. I know it takes 2 to tango but from what I heard there were opportunities but they went with him. I think alot of it is knowing we took Travis and then had to go here again. So to me it seems wasted. Overall though, I like the guy alot.

i think that's my hangup too frog. i'm having travis johnson flashbacks.

IMO there wasnt a top 10 (or even top 15) talent available at the 10 spot. with that, and from the reports of multiple trade down possibilities, i wouldnt have been in love with any pick we made. levi brown, laron landry, and adrian peterson were gone ... that should've been the end of our 10 spot.

i think okoye is a fascinating prospect and if we have the great coaching that i assume, he'll turn into sapp or better. nothing away from the kid, but this was such a weak draft that i think that we ended up in no-man's land with our choices.

Thats what was in my head. This might sound crazy but I thought there was more value in the 20s then where we picked. Again, we will never know, because it takes 2 to make a deal. I think this kid is a great story, has all the tools and I have no problem with it. It just isn't exactly a pick that makes me fired up. Solid is a good word. Hopefully the combo of him and others lifts a whole unit. Again, these comments aren't meant to be negatives. The player, himself, is pure quality....I'm just torn with D-line again.

GO OKOYE!

I disagree. I think Peterson will be just fine in Minnesota. Look what they did with Chester Taylor...

i agree, solid is a good word ... not good and not bad but it's a safe pick with a good amount of potential. there were only a handful of studs (peterson, russell, thomas, johnson, landry). after that, it's a heavy load of second and 3rd round talent. a deep but not top heavy wr draft (which we took advantage of in the 3rd as i expected), and a group of 15-25 picks (willis, okoye, nelson, etc) that would've been in our wheelhouse if we could've traded back. it's possible they'll prove me wrong, but this is likely to be the most weak draft since 2002 ... which is probably why i cant find a reason to get excited nomatter what happens at this point. landry and peterson were off the board and we didnt trade down ... my interest just wasnt there. all of the options were of comperable talent and none of which were worth the pick IMO (hall, revis, willis, okoye, nelson, meachem, etc).

This kid seems to have the smarts, drive, and talent to excel at the NFL level. I just hope he has someone to help him manage his soon to be wealth. We can only hope that the maturity is there to handle the HUGE changes that will happen in his personal life.
