Outplaying Okoye boosts Kalil's ratings

One of Kalil's defining moments at the Senior Bowl came when he lined up opposite Louisville defensive tackle Amobi Okoye, the 19-year-old phenom considered the best — or possibly second-best to Michigan's Alan Branch — interior defensive line prospect in the draft. The drill required Kalil to keep his hands on Okoye, and Okoye to swat them away. Dozens of pro coaches and scouts crowded around for a look.

What they saw was Kalil get — and keep — the upper hand.

"The advantage Ryan had is he used his hands better than Okoye did," Mayock said. "Every team in the league watches tape of those practices, so when you see one real good player going up against another real good player it catches your attention. The fact that he was able to handle the quickest defensive tackle in the draft means something."

I dunno, but I suspect chances are slim to nuttin that we'd be in a position to draft this guy, but talk about anchoring and solidifying the center position of our OLine for years.
He's this years Nick Mangold, but maybe an even better for the Texans ?

If we could trade down to around 20, I would have now problem taking him there. With him, Pitts, and Wearly the center of our O-line would be set for years. And if Winston continues to improve at RT or maybe LT and Spencer can make it back for the other tackle spot. O-line would be could become very good.

Okoye isn't a good run defender right now and is best at pass rushing and in pursuit when it comes to run stopping. I think NFL teams will be able to run right at him...at least early in his career. I think his game has holes but I haven't seen enough of him to have a full opinion of him. Also, I'm not sure Kalil is the player Mangold is. I'd like to see their grades...I'd bet Mangold had a higher grade from the scouts coming out. I'm not as enamoured with Kalil as many of you guys are.

Vinny,
Would you prefer us going after someone like a Dan mozes later in the draft than a Ryan Kalil earlier on?

No way I'd spend our 1st on Kalil and we would have to trade back to the second round before I'd touch him before a host of other prospects I like better. I like Leroy Harris or Samson Satele better than Mozes if we take a C later in the draft.

I wasn't for a moment suggesting using our #10 for Kalil, dang I wouldn't use our #10 on Staley who maybe rivals Joe Thomas long-term and is possible the Drafts second best LT, a far more strategic position than center. But maybe a late second rounder if the opportunity was there, but as always predictated on who else is still on the Board. As a matter of fact, good and sometimes very good guards and centers usually can be found on Sunday.
I'm thinking Mangold was more of a power guy, but I may be wrong ? But even he was taken very late in the first round last year, though last year certainly was a stronger Draft than this one.
But another thing about Kalil, he didn't just handle the quicks of Okoye in the SB drills, but played well against the other type of inside guy in the huge, powerhouse Alan Branch in the Rose Bowl match up against Michigan this year.

I think that Kalil can be as good as pro bowler Viking Center Matt Birk (originally a 6th round pick) as his high water mark...so I agree that he is a good prospect. I didn't mean to suggest that you were thinking Kalil at 10...just kinda stating that If I traded back, it probably wouldn't be for a center. I think we can find Centers later in the draft.

So what pick do you think would be right for Sampson Satele? And if we do trade back, who would you want them to target (assuming we ended up with Denver's 21)?

I think we can find a center with our 4th round pick, or if we trade back and land another 3rd we could pick a guy like him with a late 3. Satele probably goes in the 3rd-4th rounds, but like Owen Daniels and Dom Davis...there are always guys at the top of the 4th that could have been first day players except for some team need reaching and whatnot.
