TACKLE SHOP: Staley's speed wows scouts

Central Michigan offensive tackle sits out Combine workouts because of a hamstring injury, but he impresses during campus Pro Day.

The scouts learned one more valuable detail about Joe Staley in his Pro Day workout.

Staley can perform under pressure.

Staley’s stock rose another notch in his workout at Central Michigan University on Thursday. Staley was timed in 4.79 seconds for the 40-yard dash. That’s off the charts for an offensive tackle. Many draft analysts rank Staley third among tackle prospects, behind Joe Thomas of Wisconsin and Levi Brown of Penn State. Staley did not hurt his status.

Staley was delighted, and a little relieved, with his workout.

lol, maybe I miss it in the chronicle, but I like the way this was put together, I like the article and then it had a update (small) on the division rivals ...

STAY AWAY TEXANS. DO NOT BE WOWED BY THE NUMBERS!!!!!

I just pray that our new FO isn't as stupid as our last one when it comes to pro-day numbers and such. This guys couldn't block to save his life in a game, and I want ZERO part of him. I would take a Journeyman OT over Staley before the 5th.

Clearly I care about the 40 time of a OT who operates in less 2 FEET of space. Yes that 40 time sureeeee will come in handy.:sarcasm:

I mean unless we are moving him to TE this is POINTLESS.

Oh wait he can start at LT and be our 3rd TE???? Versatility oh yea. :poker:

hyperbole, eh.

staley can't block well and as someone said who cares how fast an OT runs 40 yards he operates within 2 feet in a game! tony ugoh is betta

Tony Ugoh could be better, but neither are worth drafting for more than ST and depth right now. Ugoh is untapped, Staley is overhyped and less talented than Seth Wand coming out, with less potential.

Well it's just an indication of his foot speed. Lot easier for a 4.8 guy to handle the speed rusher than a 5.4 guy. To completely ignore it is how you get Victor Riely's of the world palying there. Arm length, punch , slide and shuffle, knee bend and athletisim all play a part. I usually look for who is at around 5.0 as a first bench mark to see who has a legitimate shot at playing on the left side. I mean you can stick Jordan Black out there...but you're going to pay a price for that. Dockery is a fine offensive lineman, but you'll never see him on the left side. Erick Winston has all of the numbers. He also has short arms. Take's a rare athlete to play OLT for sure.
