Browns "ordered" to take a QB?

Who will call shots for Browns draft day?
By Dan Clutter

I know, I know, Art Modell no longer lives in Cleveland. Apparently, however, his hands-on management style has come back.

According to NFL.com, the Browns have been ordered by owner Randy Lerner to take a franchise quarterback with their first pick in the NFL Draft. The pick is the third overall be-hind Oakland and Detroit.

Lerner has now decided to go from an owner with no apparent leadership skills to an owner who will tie the hands of general manager Phil Savage by making this kind of command decision.
The latest rumor has the Browns talking trade with the Lions for the second pick in the draft to secure a quarterback, probably Notre Dame's Brady Quinn. The Lions would then have the third pick and some other combination of picks from the Browns in the draft.

If this is true, then it would be the worst decision the Browns have made since trading Paul Warfield to the Dolphins for what would become Mike Phipps in 1970.

For those of you born after 1970 and have never heard of Phipps, well, the Browns made a trade and acquired a franchise quarterback from the state of Indiana.

Sound familiar?

He was a huge bomb. Warfield, as we know, be-came a Hall of Fame wide receiver. What's more, the trade probably set the Browns back through the entire decade of the 1970s.

Could easily be a smokescreen but if there is truth in this it is huge for the Texans as it significantly increases the chances of AD falling to #8.

I wouldn't put too much faith in it. If they really wanted to have a franchise QB then they should just keep quiet. They don't know who will be available. If JR is chosen and they are forced to take Quinn ..it not be the right go...If Quinn is already gone but JR is there....maybe he might not be the right guy.

If both Quinn and JR are chosen 1 and 2...do they take Stanton with the 1st pick? no...they gotta wait till draft day...and hope a qb they want falls to them.

Ah yes... Mike Phipps with 24 wins in 4 14 game seasons ( 72-75 ).

He did make a playoff game in his first year as a full starter too.

First of all its SMOKESCREEN time. If they were truly ordered too this does NOT leak out almost a month and half before the draft.

Do you realize the leverage they could be giving up with Tampa Bay?

If TB even gets scared for a second that CJ could be gotten in a trade up by someone else TB could be ante up just to move up ONE slot but not if they KNOW Cle is going to go QB.

This is just MORE nonsense pre-draft.

the initial rumor is that the owner has ordered savage to draft a QB with the first pick.

and so it appears that QB is jamarcus russell. but, it looks like daniel snyders likes russell, too. could be interesting.

so apparently lerner PUBLICLY said he wants russell. smokescreen? or really dumb?

I posted that article in the draft board almost a week ago.

I'd love for Cleveland to take a QB. First, Oakland needs to go w/ Calvin though.

That is when Rick Smith gets on the phone and says, hey we have this guy named David Carr.

From Peter King's MMQB:

I think a week from today there's a very good chance that one of the big stories in the NFL will be rampant speculation (now there's a change from everything in the world of pro football) that Cleveland wants to trade up from No. 3 to No. 1 to draft Russell. G.M. Phil Savage has known Russell since his freshman year in high school in Mobile, Ala., and loves the kid. I'm told that Savage has not been ordered by owner Randy Lerner to take a quarterback.

I guess the Browns owner has taken lessons from Jerry Jones, another owner who thinks he knows football. The difference is the Cowboys have a great owner who will spend what is needed to win - but their GM is a moron.

Its a good idea to pick up a franchise QB in the 1st rd, but this year the only good QBs are JR and BQ, and neither has proven that they can win the big game in college, so what makes you think that they can do it in the NFL. Some things just don't make a lot of sense like picking up a franchise QB who sucks (No Carr jokes intended).
