Why do y'all want to trade with Cleveland!?

Ole Miss Texan

Hall of Fame
I start this because I feel like I'm one of the minorities as far as Not wanting this trade to go through. By trade I mean Carr, our 1st rd, and who knows how many draft picks..this year or high one next year.

I would love to have Peterson, I think he's an amazing football player, and has a great personality, high character. Okay he's from texas, throw that in there. He would really electrify the stadium because he's the sexy player...the offensive weapon...one of which we're lacking.

I get why people want him so bad. I don't get why people are so willing to give up so much for him.

QB-carr would be gone. Sage or Plummer??? would be our QB that scares me more than carr.
RB-we got peterson.
WR-we got AJ, Molds cut...walter our #2? mathis #3?
OL-spencer injured, salaam great backup but can't play a full season again, i like pitts and weary, mckinny is old and our best C??? flannigan is good as done, hogdon sucks, and winston is our RT..still very young and needs more time to be a legit RT.

DE-weaver has just undergone surgery, cannot playe dt for us like many want. mario was injured all last season but should be healthy, is peek cut? that leaves who babin..kalu?
DT-Maddox is our best tackle, johnson ...yea he's never had 'it' either. payne injured and cut.
LB-greenwood is decent but overpaid...i like him though, demeco is awesome! that leaves orr? is he the other olb ...charlie anderson is back up.
CB-dunta. faggins is a nickle...von hutchins?...we don't have a true #2 cb
FS-cc brown is not the answer, we need a new Fs and let him battle earl for the ss spot
SS-i like earl there, see above, cc should be a ss not fs.

draft picks 1-7. i still dont get moulds getting cut after we gave up a 5th but thats a different story.

Mario is it on the D-line.
???all over the oline
Secondary is horrid.

So why would it be a good idea to get an often injured running back when we're trying to rebuild this team? lose carr, lose draft picks. we need those draft picks to build our team.. all the day 1 picks should be starters for us.

I'd rather have 3 guys that would start for us in the DT, CB, FS, LB or OL range than peterson.

Am i the only person who thinks this trade will not happen. and if it does would be a very bad idea from our long term franchise standpoint?

It's my second choice....

My first choice would be to stay put and just grab Landry....

My third choice would be to grab Quinn...

I think you summed it up pretty good Ol Miss. The only logical thing I can see with the move up is they're going to take there lumps this year. Put a patch work o-line on the field in '07 and look for the missing peices in the '08 off season.

Looks like xtruroyaltyx is prepared to go tramping with the same o-line in '07.

I could maybe accept a trade up if it was draft picks only and none higher than 4th round this year and nothing higher than a 3rd next. Swap picks and give a 4th this year and a 3rd next, maybe. But why would CLeveland do that deal? I really like ribeye steak, but I will not cut my throat to get one.

I think cleveland would be just fine drafting peterson...aren't they rumored to really like jamarcus russell too? he could fall to them.

I think the smartest thing for cleveland to do would be to trade down and draft alan branch....he's the DT that would really help.

Isn't next year's draft deeper in OL, QB, and RB than this years? i just assume take advantage while you can, stock up on D this year and then next you get 1st rd talent in both the 1st and 2nd in either rb or ol.

like a jared gaither or sam baker next year?....don't say it threetoed. "it's always next year for the o-line" lol

This year's draft is deep with Defensive talent, esp where we are picking in the 1st and 2nd.

we do not need to trade any of our picks away, we are still in building mode and we need as much talent/depth as we can get.

and that's why our offense will continue to struggle. Whomever is back at QB.

If Charles Spencer comes back 100% by preseason and Eric Winston improves a lot over the offseason (enough to be a legit starting rt) and somehow C is ok...mckinney? i like pitts and weary at guard.

i think our o-line would be decent. Center still really scares me and thats IF spencer is 100% and winston improves a lot. We still need to addres OL in the draft...apparently Kubes like Ryan Harris outa ND a lot...hope he's there in the 3rd.

I'd rather have 3 guys that would start for us in the DT, CB, FS, LB or OL range than peterson.

I agree, the positions of need are deep in this years draft and the team needs as many picks possible. Carr is our best option at QB, for this year. We have many choices at #8, which is good for us. I am sure Kubes and Smity are uncovering every stone.

Any word on Domanick Williams injury? Wouldn't he be getting cut if FO didn't think he could play? I don't like saying this after last year, but if he comes back and is any form of his previous self, we wouldn't need Peterson. Our running game would be a strength. It would be different if he fell to #8, but that won't happen. We need to stay at 8 then pick Okoye or Landry.

BTW, we all can get off the idea that the Houston Texans as an organization are actually going to be real Texans, that was proven last year.

i'm not sure about domanick. in my mind i think he's as good as gone and truthfully don't even really consider him an option. so if he does indeed contribute any..it will be an added benifit for us. that'd be sweet if he can give us a good 10 runs a game.

give him a few carries 5-10 a game mix in dayne, lundy and taylor ...we'll be okay.

say, Dayne is a FA we gonna resign him? i sure hope so. what about michael bush in the 2nd round if he's there. I'd take that with either landry in the 1st!!!

IF, and I mean this as a BIG IF, we make that trade, I don't want to do it for Adrian Peterson. I'd prefer to trade back a little bit and pick up Marshawn Lynch and hopefully another pick later in the draft if we're going to go RB that high.

BUT, if we make that blockbuster trade with Cleveland, I'd do it because Joe Thomas was going to be available at that spot.

Then I'd start a bunch of rumors about Kalil being a child molester and crack addict or something and hope the bad press would drop him to me in the 2nd.

With Thomas and Kalil along with the guys we've got now, I think even our current crop of RB's would start looking pretty good. Whoever we get to play QB (temporarily until we can find a more permanent solution) should have lots of time which should improve the QB performance.

OTOH, if we stay where we are, I think we're going to have a cornucopia of choices that are going to help us out at #8. It's just going to be up to the FO to decide what direction they want to go in and I think we'll find out more about that direction soon.

It's going to be hard to screw this draft up. I really think that. But I've been wrong before.

hahahhaa, good one pencil. I'd wouldn't mind taking Thomas at all. If we could get a trade down..maybe just a small one.. I'd take Levi Brown. Then we could package that extra 3rd rder maybe? with our 2nd to move up to get Kalil.

i would love to have levi brown AND ryan kalil (joe thomas wouldn't be shabby either ; )

I could live with that.

I'm dying to see what we're going to do in FA. That's going to shed a lot more light on what to expect in the draft.

question about the denver detroit trade and it's effects on the draft.

oakland- Jamarcus Russell or Calvin Johnson
detroit-joe thomas....does this trade open detroit taking brady quinn? or calvin if he's available
cleveland-say detroit takes quinn or cj....would cleveland take Joe Thomas? or if oak took CJ and detroit took quinn....cleceland joe thomas or jamarcus russell?

this may improve the chance of AP falling past cleveland. ESP if OAK gets a FA quarterback. what do you guys think?

I would hope our FO wouldn't make any trading of our draft pick untill the day of the draft and the picks in question come up. We need to see who's on board.

I think you're right. The Texans will have to be quick on their feet come draft day. There's a lot of different scenarios that could emerge and they'll have to have plans for each.

Thank goodness Casserly won't be there.

You know Millen's drooling at the thought of Calvin Johnson or Brady Quinn. Getting Foster to play LT has made that position need go away. If Detroit places a value on QB because good QB's are more scarce, then I can't see Cleveland or Tampa passing on Calvin Johnson, Jemarcus Russell or Joe Thomas, leaving Adrian Peterson for us or the Vikes.

If I had to guess now:

1. JeMarcus Russell
2. Brady Quinn
3. Joe Thomas
4. Calvin Johnson

Foster was and is a rt. Bacus is the left tackle. They got a lot of guys hurt last year just like we did. But I got what you were saying . Yes I agree the free agency period should give us a clue what the top seven have on their minds. Denver is looking at the baord and seeing they can pick up another ORT any where in day one and still be pretty solid. Cutler opened a lot of holes for Denver this year. They get some youth on the d-line...they could give the chargers a run for the money next season.

I'm with you. I think we'd give up too much for him. I think Lynch could be just as good a pro as Peterson, so why trade up? It's not like Peterson was the best runner in college history. He was no O.J., Sanders, or Dickerson.

funny...that is most common comaparison i hear pundits make to peterson.

and that's why our offense will continue to struggle. Whomever is back at QB.

Here is what I hope to see, Spencer comes back to what he was before the injury and becomes our LT for a long time, Pitts decides he actually enjoys playing G and plays to his potential, Weary slides over to Centre to make room for Carlisle who we sign, and Winston continues to grow at RT.

There we have a line that grow together and will be more than decent.

If Weary struggles with line calls etc, would be great to land someone like Kalil to be in the middle and have Weary and Salaam to be the back up O-Line.

more smoke to the cleveland trade fire. this is in reference to the falcons trying to move up for calvin johnson and that Houston could steal one of the trading partners Atlanta covets. just thought it was cool we are hearing this from another independent source. same Carr involvement, just from a different source:

Another problem for the Falcons is that Houston wants to move up to No. 3 to get Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson.

Their bargaining chips include David Carr and the No. 8 pick.

I'd trade up for an offensive centerpiece both Smith and Kubiak adore--AP, JR, JT, CJ. But the price has to be right. 8 + Carr + 4th rounder. That's it. Piggy-backing off the Carr to Tampa speculation, that could get the Texans to the 5 spot. But it's likely far too little, if not outright insulting to swing a deal with Cleveland (would probably require a 3rd in addition to or in lieu of the 4th). So be it, then. I just am not for any "who knows how many draft picks" deals. Especially deals including day one picks when it looks like that 2nd or 3rd is about to become Carr's prospective replacement.

If a reasonable deal can't be struck, then BPA at 8 (Landry??) would do me fine.

This is a great assessment OMT. Rep coming your way!

And no, you aren't the only one who thinks this trade would be a bad idea. You can count me on your side with this deal. I don't have anything against getting AP at #8, but it's just too high of a price at #3, and I don't think Kubes and Smith would do anything like this.

As for why some people would be willing to give up so much to get him, well, I guess there are just some people out there that are willing to take that risk (hope none of them work for the Texans FO). They seem to be the type that want to jump at "the next great thing" whatever it is. Last year it was Bush and Young, this year it's Peterson and Johnson. It's like waving something shiney in front of a baby, they are going to grab for it! JMHO!

Good to hear... Another thing is we'd be Paying #3 money to the player instead of #8 money which is considerably less. Of course we are doing a lot with our cap space...i just hope it's for other reasons.
