Updated: February 6th 2007

1 Oakland- Jamarcus Russell, QB LSU

2 Detroit - Joe Thomas, OT Wisconsin

3 Cleveland- Brady Quinn, QB Notre Dame

4 Tampa Bay- Calvin Johnson, WR Georgia Tech

5 Arizona- Jamaal Anderson, DE Arkansas

6 Washington- Alan Branch, DT Michigan

7 Minnesota- Gaines Adams, DE Clemson

8 Houston- Adrian Peterson, RB Oklahoma

9 Miami - Levi Brown, OT, Penn State

10 Atlanta- Reggie Nelson, S, Florida

Texans 2nd round pick is: Michael Griffin, S, Texas

Griffin would be a definite upgrade for the defensive secondary. I like that pick, and not just because I'm a Longhorn or because I put him in my starting lineup.

When I was looking around to what is available at that pick, Griffin looked like BPA. I really want a Center, but Kalil will most likely be gone, and I'm not sure Datish is worth the reach; besides, a good center may be there in the third round.

i'd be happy with that, addressing two critical needs positions & still in line to get a decent QB prospect/MLB in the 3rd or maybe even a CB if we haven't already adressed it in FA.:ok:

On a side note, i don't understand the Minn. pick. They were among the top in Run defense why would they pick up Adams, when they need offensive & secondary help?

everyone knows i'm usually opposed to "skill position" in the first, but at 8 peterson is a tremendous value and griffin is a great second round choice. i'd like to see the rest of the draft go defense and offensive line, but these two picks definitely work for me.

The more I see those AP highlites, the more I want him at # 8. :bubble:
Unless something crazy happends at the top of the draft order that is.

I would crap my pants in glee if this were our first two rounds.

No matter who we select where, there will always be guys we pass that I'll be like 'man he would have been a good pick too' Like Landry, Nelson, Brown etc in 1st and just missing out on Kalil in the 2nd.

It'd be a hard decision whether to pick Griffin or Chris Houston. i'd probably go with griffin though.

I'd look for OL,LB, or CB in the 3rd. wow thats still a lot. lol. i'd take pba of those position if they warrant it and that would be yet another solid 1st day.

because they have spent big draft pick wise the alst few years on the D-Line and it hasnt panned out. kenechi Udeze had 0 sacks in 2006 and Erasmus James missed much of the year. their most consistent players were interior lineman like Pat Williams.

Gaines Adams is a pass rusher not a run stopper.

The current #8 player on Kiper's Big Board is Ted Ginn, Jr. I'm against it, but does anyone feel that Ginn would be a valuable pickup at #8?

Oh My God, those 1st 2 picks would be awesome! Sign Steinbeck & maybe sign Jordan Babineaux and that offseason would be a 9 in my book.

Sorry about that. I couldnt copy and paste, so I had to type it out myself.

Good catch though.

Don't be sorry. You did it right, I was just pointing out how everyone lists him and knows he plays safety, but a Draft website somehow lists him as a CB.

I dont see us leaving Merriweather on the board in round 2 unless there are some serious concers over his character. Also, Justin Blaylock is still on the board at our second round pick, but I guess this depends on what we did in FA, such as Ken Hamlin...

If Blalock is there at #40 there is no way we pass on him.

If the best OG in the draft falls that far we have to grab him.

He's one of the better OG prospects to come out in a few years. IMO, he is a certain 1st rounder.

I also think Merriweather will be the better player and a better value in that second round. I know character issues are something most posters don't want here but I think our defense could use a little attitude as long as he's not an axe murderer or anything(unless of course he has Bud Lite).:drunk:

Not that it matters, but on the actual site, they list Reggie Nelson as a CB not a S

Because there are scouts who think Reggie is really smaller than listed and that the 175 that is listed by the gators is very optimistic. And in a lot of scouts minds he is to light to stand up to the pounding a safety takes.

This would be an amazing first two picks for us and could possibly pan out to another spectacular draft like last years. This would help out immensely and if we could sign a veteran in the secondary like Clements or Lewis I think our secondary could possibly be a strong position next year. If we could land Rufus Alexander with our 3rd round pick that would make this scenario even better since we would be filling needs with young players to build a strong defense for years to come.

Is our DROY ProBowl Alt MLB not cutting it anymore?

I was surprised to see Landry fall so far.

If we draft AD at #8 and either Meriweather (mock says he goes in rd 1) or Griffin in round 2, then that, my friends, is a SOLID start to a draft.

I do not expect Kalil will fall to us in round 2, but if he is there, then I hope we draft Kalil.

This mock has Merriweather going about 10 picks after our second round pick. From what I've seen of Griffin and heard about Merriweather, I think Merriweather is better in coverage, which is something we really need in our secodary. Griffin is probably better in run support, but his role in the UT defense was closer to the line of scrimage then the average FS.

Sad to see that a supposed "draft" site does not even have the picks correct.

We have the 8th pick in the 1st and pick 39 in the second.

FYI everyone we pick 39 not 40.

Blalock is a late second round pick at best. He will most likely fall into the 3rd. Unless you are a Longhorn fan then go ahead with the delusion.

I read a lot of these comments last year, and I don't ever remember reading the names Demeco Ryans or Owen Daniels, until after the draft. We really don't have a clue what's going to happen.

Don't worry we're the experts and we as MB members know everything about the texans and who they should get and what the team needs to do... :jk:

I'd certainly prefer M-Weatherman over Griffin. I think he has more playmakiing and coverage abilities.

That be said either one of them is an improvement.

I'm still not sold on Peterson at RB. If we do that I'd expect round 3-7 to be O-line help.

If some how Chris Houston falls to our pick in 2nd round, then we should grab him ASAP. Finding a stud corner is allot harder then finding safeties.

Griffin is strong safety were as Merriweather could be one heck of a FS. So out of these two I would prefer Merriweather to Griffin but I am not sure if Texans will ever draft Merriweather with his character concerns.

Strange, last year, prior to the draft, I was reading about Demeco in a couple of mocks going in the top 10. They were really touting how smrt he was. (typo intentional) When we got him in the 2nd, I was ecstatic.

I had no idea who The Weatherman was.

And I expected LenDale White to be a relatively high 1st rounder at this point last year.

But, yeah, I agree with you. It's awfully early to start talking about how the draft is going to turn out. Let's see some Combine and Pro Days first.

I think the combine is the most overrated event in the entire sporting calander. Why would the time someone runs a 40 yard dash in shorts and a T-shirt have any impact on their abilities? Maybe if you put pads on them you can get a semblence of speeed, but right now, its pretty usless. Same goes for most events which dont even get close to practice type enviroments, let alone game. Here is a hint for finding good players: watch them play!

RDR the combine is not just about the Phy. stuff its also interviewes and a chance for potintional players and coaching staffs to interact. Basicaly is it a dog and pony show? Yes but for some teams is a hugh part of the process leading up to the draft. JMHO I love the combine and the draft sort of amps everthing up for the upcoming season.

Well, I can't say that I know where other people have him rated, but I'm convinced he's going to be an all-pro guard in the NFL. By the way, I hate the Longhorns!

Like someone else said, there's more to the Combine than the measurements.

But, my point has been that we're sitting here trying to figure out where guys are going to get picked but until they go through the Combine and the Pro Days, we don't really have an idea who's going to be hot come draft day. If someone comes in fat and overweight like LenDale White did last year, they're going to fall. It could turn out that Adrian Peterson has some weird narrowness in his spinal column and no one will even touch him because of the risk to his life. Stranger things have happened.

Some guys are going to rise and some guys are going to fall, it's just too early to predict where guys are going to go.

Yea but is soooo much fun trying.

I could live with the Peterson Pick...... I may actually be giddy if it does go down like that... but....

If Spencer can't play, who will we start at LT??

at the same time, we can ask...

If DDW can't play, who will start at HB??

I like the answer to the latter question much better than the former..... Dayne vs. "I don't know"

I'm not saying we should pass on Peterson.... I think we'll do just fine if Salaam has to start for 4 or 5 games, but then what??

blah blah. it's just another way of looking at players who you're going to invest a ton of money into, so you want to make absolute sure you're getting someone who's not only going to play effectively, but also play at the highest level for a long time. good coaches and scouts will use the combine just like anything else, as a tool for looking at many different angles for potential players.

Well you are the only person that I have seen make a comment like that about Blalock so I'll just disregard it.

Unless you are an OU or A&M fan then just go along with your delusion.

Look at any draft site rankings & I doubt you will find one that doesn't have Blalock as the #1 OG.

He was rated as a 1st round talent at OT last year as a junior.

i dunno, i think most people are leaning towards grubbs as the #1 G.

regardless, hero's comment is pretty ridiculous.

If Levi Brown is the guy we really want in Round 1, don't you think it'd be better to trade down to get him? Maybe pick up a 3rd with it. Levi's good and would fill a need, but 8 is too high for a guy like that.

nope, he's a top 10-15 pick at the moment. miami could easily snatch him up at #9, and several teams after that would be very interested, too. if houston wants him over anyone else, they better take him.

Yup, he seems to be close enough that it wouldn't be smart to try and get cute and screw up, kind of like we did with DJ.

Let's say this draft does happen..

1. Adrian Peterson
2. Michael Griffin

3. Drew Stanton
-He has shown some promise and I like him better than some of the other qb's. What do you think of having him to sit and learn for a couple seasons behind whoever starts next.. Will he be here in the 3rd? he seems to be moving up to late 2nd rd though.

4. Desmond Bishop
-I really liked this guy when I watched the holiday bowl. Could he play strongside linebacker? will he go in the 3rd or is 4th more like it.

I wouldn't mind this for the first 4 rds. The only thing I dont like is that we don't address oline. I would love Kalil in 2nd and then get safety in 4th rd? and we don't address CB. at least we got a FS that would help out, i think griffin would be better in coverage than cc brown. but also seems like another strong safety to me.

what do yall think. no matter what we do the first 4 rds...we will leave some needs out.

pretty good, but 2nd round I like Daymeion Hughes over Michael Griffin. Hughes is a definite playmaker and would look good alongside D-Rob.

I like a guy like Jared Zabransky late in the draft because of his proven leadership skills. Kolb and Stanton are question marks in that area. Gary could mold Zabransky into exactly what he wants him to be. He's a proven winner.

Hughes judging by the senior bowl pratices, has great difficulty in changing directions. He will be a liablity in our cover two as a corner. If you're saying, you are going to put him in space to be our future FS...I don't think he has the skill set to do that. He can cover man to man, but he gets foot strung off of the reciever. Go figgure. It's usually the other way around.

I think Stanton and Zabranski have a chance in this system. If Kubiak can get Kolb close to being an NFL starter in this system...He should get coach of the year. The guy is a train wreck throwing on the run. wether Kubes can fix that or not, is anyones GUESS.

Let's not forget that lying in the 5th or 6th round from the U of New Hampshire is a CB by the name of Corey Graham. He is very under the radar and has excellent cover skills. I have not seen him play an actual game, just some film here and there...but from the film and what I've heard, he's a hell of a playmaker at the position.
