A pissed off Vermonter

Practice Squad
I've been checking out some of these mock drafts online and I've been awestruck at some of these "experts" and some of their picks. I might just be a pissed off Vermonter but I can honestly say that I'm either getting different tape up here in the north or that you guys are missing someththing.

1.) Of all the mocks I've seen there has only been one with Troy Smith in the first round. I mean come on this guy won the Heisman. I mean yeah he isn't going to produce the cash Russel and Quinn will but he is the next best thing. The one time I did see him in a mock he was taken by Baltimore. This would be a good pick considering that McNair is on in years but it would suck for him because this would be the 2nd year in a row that he would be thrown out of his city by a faster rookie.

2.) Amobi Okoye- I've read some mocks that have him droping into the mid 20's. No chance! If he drops past 15 the Packers will be rich from the earnings of their 16th pick as every team will be giving up whoever they have that has any value to Green Bay (anybody really will help). Okoye is the youth of the draft and he can help any pass rush you put him on.(take the hint)

3.)Who goes to the Browns? I've seen all sorts off answers to it, from QB to D-end and, heck I've seen Laundry taken at 3. OK a first round QB is out of the question unless you give Smith a huge bonus. I think they can do better in free agency then waste their pick on Peterson. I don't know their lines good enough to point out a huge flaw but anything to give their QB more time. I also think giving Frye a year to learn from a veteran like Garcia or Plummer would make him a better Franchise QB. P.S. Laundry won't go 3.

the Old Ball Coach won one too. Ever Looked up Spurriers pro record ? Andre Wares ? Six foot is not nothing. Life is not fair. No P.C. in the NFL. You're talking about multi million dollar contract....I'll just rather endure your
displeasure, let's say. The hieght issue is not nothing. If you're his agent or kin...Tell him not to go to NY for the draft..... He's the ESPN Led Zepplin Green room guy. I gotta feeling going to be a very long day for Troy "Tater Tot " Smith.

Sorry to hear you are not getting the news up in Vermont. Tater Tot is likely to go to the Browns in RD3. The championship game cost him some big bucks and proved the naysayers to be correct. Also he did not do anything to raise his stock at the Senior Bowl.

Jason White - undrafted, tried out by KC (unsigned), eventually signed by Tennessee, retired before ever playing in NFL
Eric Crouch - was drafted as a WR in round 3, never played a down in the NFL, became 4th string QB in CFL
Chris Weinke - 4th round selection by the Panthers, career backup
Danny Wuerffel - 4th round selection by Saints, career backup

Just a sampling of Heisman winning QBs over the last 10 yrs. Only Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart are Heisman winners who were drafted in the 1st round during this time that might have a shot at a decent career in the NFL. Winning the Heisman does not guarantee an illustrious NFL career or warrant a high draft selection, especially at the QB position.

Look i know about all these other guys but Smith is the real deal. he's got the speed of Young and the arm of Leinart, he may not have played good in the championship but he made a huge impact against Mighigan and their defence.

dude, sorry to burst your bubble, but there is no way on Gods green earth is troy smith as fast as vince young...oh and you said he has the arm of leinart; leinart has a suck @$$ arm...why do you think he fell so far in the first round...they questioned his arm strength and accuracy!

yea, but young and leinart:

won national championships
are both 6'5

and smith doesnt even have the running style of young, so his speed argument is moot. he's a pure pocket passer, and an undersized one at that. leinart doesnt even have that strong of an arm. smith has an average NFL arm, with a long windup. so short with an average arm and long windup equals not gonna translate to the NFL. he's not a first round prospect. heisman is overrated. just cuz you win a heisman doesnt give you a free pass at doing well in the NFL. its a college award that doesnt take into pro prospect status into account. so get off his jock; it's time you realize he's not that great.

Heres the real question I need to ask you: How many teams at around picks 25 - 32 truly NEED a QB enough to take Smith where you think he's valued? The reason everyone has him early R2 is because the early drafting teams are the teams that need QBs, not the bottom half!

I like Smith, but I don't love him as an NFL prospect, but I do think he can make it in the NFL. But, ya if he had been set to go in the 1st rd he blew that with his performance against Florida where he was totally outplayed by Chris Leak. Add to that his short stature for a pro QB, his avg arm, and I think we are looking at round 2-3. And as others have said, he is not a running QB. He is a pure pocket passer. Comparing him and VY is not even getting warm. He is closer to Leftwich than Young. With some grooming and good coaching, I think he can be an avg to slightly above avg starter in the NFL, but time will tell.

You forgot Gino Toretta. And Charlie Ward went to the NBA. Gary Beban never amounted to anything, not sure John Huarte did either. And while Vinny's had a long career, he won't go down on the list of all time great quarterbacks either. Andre Ware? Nope. Ty Detmer? Not really. Pat Sullivan? Hmmm. Winning the Heisman as a QB is almost more of a jinx than anything else.

So let's consider all of the great quarterbacks of recent history, who won the Heisman?

Brady - nope
Manning - nope
Favre - nope
Vince - nope :)
Montana- nope
Elway - nope
Steve Young - nope
Aikman - nope

So who are the Heisman winning QB's that have ever amounted to anything?

Roger Staubach - obv
Jim Plunkett - won a Super Bowl
Carson Palmer - looks promising
Matt leinart - we'll see

So please spare me the "he won a heisman, he must be great" speech. Quite the contrary. I think Troy Smith is a second day pick

Wow, you threw Vince in with those names.:drunk: He should retire right now. He'll be a one year hall of famer.:ok:
