They should make it the Junior-Senior Bowl

GP

Go Texans!
Include the juniors who are coming out. You'd have a game that matches ALL the top talent against each other.

Because, seriously, was it THAT fun to see the Penn State running back (I cannot even remember his name) as the feature back in the game? Yikes. I think I have diarrhea that runs faster than him.

We're always asking the big question: "Just how good are the college players when they go to the NFL and then have to face better opponents than they faced in college?"

When you figure that a lot of the top-rated guys might have faced cream-puff opponents, we always wish that we could see the college players square up against the best of the best.

I don't think that showcasing the seniors is all that great of a deal. Put the top Juniors and Seniors in there and watch the fireworks.

Look at how many juniors are considered to be top-rated picks. It makes sense to put the best against the best.

What do you all think about the idea?

I could see a lot of agents NOT liking the idea because pitting the best against the best can expose a lot of players for not being as great as they are hyped to be.

The way it's set up now, it can't be done logistically. The deadline for juniors to declare was the 15th, with the senior bowl practices beginning on the 22nd. The senior bowl rosters have to be set about a week ahead of time, so their claim right now is that it would be too much of a time crunch. They could fix this by moving the deadline to declare up, but the college bowls now continue into the second week of January, so that might not work. They could also push the senior bowl back, but it would have to be a couple of weeks due to the super bowl being the next weekend. And then you're into February, and the scouting combine is right around the corner.

Also, remember, the high tier prospects wouldn't attend the game if given the option. Hell, the two best senior prospects this year (Quinn,Thomas) pulled out of the game. All the elite guys only perform at on campus pro days. Not the combine. Not the senior bowl.

95% of the rosters are set in December. The NFL prepares extensive portfolios on each player for each NFL team. IF you moved to a later date it would have to be after the Pro Bowl or 2 weeks before the combine and many SRs and Jrs would pass because they are preparing for Indy.

Which is why I would put a higher premium on Mozes (C) who DID play. As a GM or HC, I would give a longer look and more credit towards guys who don't run from the chance to go head-to-head with top talent.

You're right, though, the current fad or trend is to limit the chances of having your draft stock "drop" by having fluffy pro days on your home field.

I have yet to watch the senior bowl from start-to-finish. I plan on watching it in its entirety and attempting to grade the play of guys like Mozes and Levi Brown, etc.

But from the first few minutes of the game, I thought Mozes and Brown were pretty much bulldozing their opposing linemen. Yet you think "But would they be AS impressive against Gaines Adams and Alan Branch?"

So, it's frustrating that they go to the trouble of having a Senior Bowl when its not truly the top talent from top to bottom on the field/on the roster. Know what I mean?

It'd just be awesome to see the BEST talent go head-to-head and play some football.

i think the whole thing is to reward the top players for staying for their senior years, not just for scouting. the whole game would lose its meaning if you were to include all draft eligible players.

It wouldn't matter anyway. The top Juniors who are coming out are ranked as top picks in the draft. The best players don't play anyway (Brady Quinn, Joe Thomas) so even if Juniors were allowed to play, most of them would elect not to.

of course it is. to include juniors just to boost ratings or "make it more fun" or something is absurd. if you wanna come out as a junior, you take that risk of getting no all-star bowl play.
