49ers staff to coach Senior Bowl -- again

Mike Nolan and his coaching staff did not expect it, but they are jumping at the chance to coach the South squad at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., later this month. The Senior Bowl is the top college all-star game, and many of the best draft-eligible players use the week of practice and the game as a showcase for their abilities. The game is scheduled to be played Jan. 27.

The 49ers lucked out because most of the teams ahead of them in the draft order are going through coaching changes. The Lions' staff could have gone, but head coach Rod Marinelli was scheduled for hip-replacement surgery today, and will not be up for coaching.

This is the perfect year for the 49ers to coach in the Senior Bowl, because they expect to have eight picks -- including two compensatory picks -- in the first four rounds of the draft.

The 49ers' staff also coached in the game last year. Niners draft picks Manny Lawson, Michael Robinson, Marcus Hudson and Parys Haralson all played in the Senior Bowl last year.

This is weird we got it this year, because teams who draft before us got the chance to do caoch at the Senior Bowl.

Raiders - Don't have a coach
Lions - Marinelli is having surgery
Bucs - Coaching the North squad
Atlanta - Don't have a coach
Miami - Don't have a coach

But that still leaves Cleveland, Washington, Minnesota, and Houston all passed on the chance. Not sure why either.

Anyway, glad that the 49ers staff is coaching the Senior Bowl again :)

Houston has too much to do and shuoldnt be worried about coaching the all-star game. Maybe next year Kubes......for now you keep reviewing the beloved Texans.....

This is weird we got it this year, because teams are given the chance to coach the a Senior Bowl squad in order of the draft. We have the 11th pick, so for whatever reasons some teams passed on the opportunity.

Gruden will fall in love with Joe Thomas....

The last time we coached in the Senior Bowl, we fell in love with Babin and we all know that story.

Gruden isn't smart enough IMO to not fall in love with a QB that isn't ready to play but has good potential.

Yeah that kinda threw me also. So what you guys fixin to do with David Bass ? Inquiring minds want to know.

I'm with ya beerlover. The more QBs go off the board top five the better I like it.

Didn't we draft Joppru for that reason, too? They liked him so much in the Senior Bowl that they had to take him?

Coach Kubiak has appeared to turn down the opportunity to coach some of the top seniors in the 2007 Senior Bowl. Kubiak wasted an opportunity to get to know and coach some of the top players (QBs) in the 2007 draft.

On the bright side my other team, 49ers head coach (Mike Nolan) has accepted the opportunity to coach in the 2007 Senior Bowl. Nolan stated last year whenever he and his staff have the chance to coach in the Senior Bowl they will. Nolan feels like it give him an edge by having the opportunity to coach some of the top players in the up coming draft. Nolan has stated by actually being on the field coaching the players, being around the players in meeting, he gets a better feel of what type of players they are and how they respond to being coached. Mike Nolan and his staffed coached in the Senior Bowl last year as well.

Against Denver Baas got time at center (along with Tony Wragge) for Eric Heitmann since he was injured.

But yeah he is a back-up and IIRC Denver was the only game where he played some O-line.

Dom Capers and staff coached the 2003 Senior Bowl North squad. Babin was in the class of 2004 (not sure if he was in the Senior Bowl). Guys the Texans coached and drafted include Joppru, Wand, & Ragone. Domanick Davis played for the South squad. Interestingly, here are some of the guys the Texans coached in that game that they passed on drafting:

Cato June
Lance Briggs
Eugene Wilson
Dan Koppen
Kevin Curtis
Tully Banta-Cain

that sentence confused me. but i'm guessing you think he'll fall in love with a quinn or someone to that effect. but i doubt that, he doesn't fit gruden's mold for QB's at all. chances are he'll fall in love with someone. last time he coached the senior bowl he drafted several players from the side he coached, including cadillac williams.

If you coach, or you don't coach the senior bowl odds are pretty high that you will draft someone on the roster. These players are the cream of the crop for senior players. That said Gruden did fall in love with the cadillac.
