Panthers vs Texans Game 2 Preseason

Just finished watching. Love the new mentality of the OL. They are attacking and getting push off the LOS. The RBs today complimented that mentality by running physically north/south. Woody Marks in particular impressed me, he had an extra gear compared to Chubb (who also looked good).

Defense played as expected. Bucky Brooks just ranked the Texans with a top 3 DL and secondary. This defense should be elite and they played as such.

I did like seeing the rookie Smith and Damon Arnette come away with picks. Not sure if Arnette will make the 53 but maybe he can hang around on the PS and continue to develop.

Oline starters looked good including Blake Fisher who before injury had 15 drop backs and no pressures allowed! Concerning his injury, I have not looked in the injury thread since the game ended, however one article I saw said that he exited the blue tent and was seen stretching.

There are virtually no significant acute injuries where immediate post injury stretching is advocated.

We are all pretty happy how our offense played yesterday. But let us not be coaxed into blind complacency, ignoring:

It's important to keep in mind that the Panthers' defense was historically bad in 2024, ranking last in several key categories like total defense, rushing defense, and scoring defense. They allowed a record 534 points and were near the bottom in most defensive metrics. Reports that I have received is that not much change is expected this year.

They’re throwing screen passes that actually work because the OL now appears to know how to run one.
Hey Speedy what was your impression of Woody Marks yesterday ?
I'm intreuged by his "Woody" knickname and looked into it, and frankly never heard of the movie "Toy Store" ? Have you ?
Hey listen remember when you gave some advise on contributing to the TexasTalk MB ?
Well I now need some advise about a different subject ?

Toy Story. Tom Hanks was the voice of Woody. There were about 17 sequels that grossed $2 gillion.

But you never heard of it.

Ok my wife just told me of course I've heard of it, but you must have just forgot.
Ok that's it I forgot 'cause apparently it was a very prominent movie.
But I think it's cool that our new RB had such a healthy and wholesome imagination in his childhood.

The most likely injury that Andy Dalton sustained was a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament of the elbow. After coming out of the blue tent, he was seen on the sideline wearing an black elbow sleeve and throwing just a couple of balls. With a partial tear, he would still be able to throw the football, albeit with less velocity and with pain. His return to play would depend on the grade of injury. A Grade I would be ~2-4 weeks. But a Grade II with conservative treatment would not allow him to return before 8 weeks or more. His MRI today will define his injury and prognosis.

Youve never heard of Toy Story? Is this satire or have you lived under a rock the last 30 years?

Yeah I’ve been thinking about it all today that even the o-linemen we know aren’t good still looked good and the fact it may all just be because the Carolina defensive line is absolutely cheeks. Kind of like week 1 of last year where we thought we had a proper run game when it was really just because for 4 or 5 weeks Indy would give up 4-5 yards on the ground to anyone and everyone each play.

Thankfully Detroit is coming to town and while the starters likely won’t play the team on team scrimmage will likely be telling. Hutchinson will be a game wrecker obviously (I’ve already heard about him wrecking the Miami practices) but I’m keen to see how they show against the others out there. Especially when that’s also a team that preaches physicality.

I’m also expecting a few fights. Two scrums at least.

Unfortunately, this 3rd game is mostly for individual evaluation..........and of mostly players on the bubble............very little team evaluation value will come out of it. That makes it that more unfortunate that our 1st team was not pitted against the 1st team of a decent team in this past week's game. This last game leaves me very guard concerning all aspects of our offense in general going into the season.

I’ve yet to catch up with the game replay, and it being pre season I’m unsure if I will, but I heard some positive reviews of Blake Fisher’s play that seem to be at odds with this PFF rating. Wade Smith seemed to think he’d turned a corner compared to what we’ve heard recently.
Let''s keep it real.................Last week against a good defense, he allowed a team high 6 pressures, 1/2 sack, and several quarterback hits.

I felt he held his own when subbing in at LT last season, and that any knock on his performance at RT should be weighed against the performance of Shaq Mason inside of him.

I know he’s had a lot of negative reviews of his plays through camp, and it seemed he’d been knocked down as far as 3rd team, but he started this pre-season game and was graded as doing ok by some, that is a positive to cling to.

While I'm happy our starters looked good, I'm not putting a whole lot of value into it. Last preseason, CJ and the offense also looked good on the one or two drives they had. A nice TD to Tank made us happy just like the nice TD to Nico this time around. I doubt we'll see the starters next week, so we'll just have to see what happens when bodies start flying for real in September.

Hoping Higgins and CJ get some extra time working together, especially in the redzone. Higgins has made some great grabs but feels just a tick out of sync at times. I'm nitpicking only because he looks like another Nico and I'm so excited for it. I think he's already flashed a lot of positives too

Lassiter started the game and played 13 snaps. No stats because he wasn't targeted. Bryce Young said to himself "I'm better off challenging the AllPro."
Awesome , thanks. Someday I’m going to learn players numbers. But wow. That says a LOT about the locksmith!

Yeah the practice is going to be a much bigger portion of analysis rather than the game against Detroit.

Thanks, but the question was concerning our offensive starters against Panthers starting defense and resulting rankings. See post 131

Right. I wasn't clear, but I was saying that the only time I remember seeing any combo of starters against backups was our 1st team defense against their backups for one series...other than that I don't recall any other starters vs backups.

The Texans are heading to Detroit for the practice and the game.
I realized that as I typed it but didn’t bother correcting because it makes no difference. They’re facing Detroit in practice is what’s important, location is not.

On that first play, Im always impressed by big guys that can throw a cut block so effectively. He looked good, and Im a fan...

But the Texans were mostly getting the ball out pretty quick and those edge rushers look pretty bad whoever they are.

I want to emphasize that I dont want to diminish how good he's looked, but I want to see how he does against a good edge player for an entire game. I wouldnt be surprised at all if he rises to the occasion and handles it really well.

Either way, even with this vanilla pre season offense it looks like Caley knows what hes doing and knows how to put guys in favorable situations so im not worried.
