Panthers vs Texans Game 2 Preseason

Why didn’t Howard start today?

That said, I paid special attention to Blake, and I’ve gotta give him his props. Panthers don’t have the best defense for sure, but Blake put in some really nice work.

Hope that injury is very minor. Crossing my fingers that maybe he turned a corner.

Mills looking very pedestrian so far…being kind. He’s reverting back to his normal stiff demeanor and delivery, with no vision, and spotty accuracy. Last week, I though he looked good and was really turning a corner. Today…back to bad Mills. Carriages always turn back into pumpkins.

Is it just me or does anyone else think the Head Ref seems to have an extremely dry upper lip? Every time the camera is on him…..it looks like his lip is hung up high on his teeth. Sort of like Fire Marshall Bill.

Slovis and Mertz time. I just want to see if Mertz can rebound. On the other hand I want to see Slovis start to be a solid #3 so we don’t have to start worrying about that position before the season starts. This might be a really interesting post preseason for NC.

I think we may have a good one in Caley. OL looks physical, picks up pass rush stunts, nice mix of run/pass. All in all, seems like he has focused on detail and execution versus being smarter then everyone. Long overdue. Really liked the OL all first half versus the trash we had last year. Defense was good, lots of people around the ball, good pressure with 4 guys, stuffed a good running game. Second half is less important to me as we get even deeper, now it is about individuals

Have the Texans even targeted the TE’s today?

I’d really like to see what Stover and Lachey could do to help move the chains.
They are making sure they use as little of our play book as possible heading into the regular season. I think come regular season they will showcase our TE's more than what we have seen or will see here in the preseason. I hope that is the case anyhow.

Irv Smith is getting a lot of run today. Top two guys, nothing.

That room is pretty set to me. Dalton, Cade, Irv. That’s it. Lachey to the PS.

Of course, #9 out for the year. Again.

Much like wishes being fishes.... I always make big ones.... if one of them is "granted" you didn't waste it. Same with my hopes.... I hope big.

Go big or go home.

Hopefully zero injuries all season... not realistic... but maybe its a miracle.

Overall enjoyed the game.

One thing I’m really liking is that the O-Line is getting very consistent push on run plays. I can’t remember the last time I saw that happening. It was nice seeing it happen with consistency - as last game the starters had push but the backups were far less consistent. That said I don’t think this Panthers d-line is all that great although their interior was giving the Browns guards the business in their preseason game last week.

Also thought the refs were in preseason form as there were a lot of soft penalties against the DBs.

I also liked KC Ossai. I think Demeco could have another solid developmental LB project on his hands who I imagine should be able to make it onto the PS.

When did we trade for Tunsil? Try anytime before that. I was very confident once we jettisoned him to DC, the run blocking would improve.

Like I said ten million times and will say ten million more - addition by subtraction.

Also liked what I saw from Woody Marks. He has every tool: speed, burst, acceleration, vision, fluidity, pass catching nous, except he lacked arguably the best RB ability in contact balance and ability to power through the first tackle. I saw too many times on his college tape where he went down from regular arm tackles from d-linemen or whoever was first to him. This game he powered through Panthers players and often kept the legs churning for an extra couple yards. If he could add that to his game he could genuinely be an all around complete back.

Panthers LB Nic Scourton did not play today. He left the Texans/Panthers scrimmage Thursday for what the team called heat exhaustion. But his breathing continued to be difficult, and he was taken to the hospital where a chest xray revealed that he had sustained a pneumothorax (collapsed lung). Since in this condition, air travel and high altitudes must be avoided, he returned home in a car. He is being told that return to play is week-to-week. It can be anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 1/2 months before he can safely return, depending on how quickly the lung is able to fully re-expand.
