Welcome Nick Chubb to Houston

Not sure how I feel about this signing. He isn't what he was, and that doesn't bode well for the backs currently on the roster if we had to sign him.

I'm not overly enthused but I'm assuming it is a minimum dollar deal but it sure doesn't say much for Ogunbawale or Pierce. Only comment I have seen off this message board says Chubb is now running back 2.

It's a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the chance to earn another $2.5 million if he hits certain incentives.

I still

I still think that British Brooks should have gotten a fair chance in training camp to win the back up role at Rb. I don't see him as a FB. I don't want an old RB full of wear and tear who came off of a serious injury.
If not British Brooks any number of young free agent Rb's could have filled the back up role.

I like Nick Chubb, he’s been a good player, but I’m not a fan of the signing. But I’m on board and hopeful he still has some burst/acceleration/cutting ability left. One thing that hasn't been mentioned, is the Browns had consistently strong offensive line play during his time there...and that has not been the case here.

What does this signing say about Mixons health?

As for Pierce/Dare/British Brooks talk, any of those guys are more than welcome to outplay Chubb or Mixon for more time, and £2.5m isn’t a huge risk while £5m is a bargain if he hits milestones that make him a starter.

Mixon was out of training camp all of last season. At this point I’m just assuming he’s in bubble wrap until the season starts.

And like you said, any other RB is more than welcome to outplay Chubb to take a roster spot from him. But bottom line is, last season in the playoffs they only trusted Mixon with the ball. They needed to bring in RBs this offseason and they did that with Woody/Chubb.

I’m not optimistic at all that it will work out but if the risk is simply flushing 2.5 mil down the toilet then so be it. Low risk/medium to high reward.
If there is one thing that I've seen from NC is his willingness to spend "small" money to guarantee he has options. We don't know how Chubb is going to play out, but I think they like the idea of having a vet as the backup, assuming he's healthy enough to make a difference.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them try to find a RB by trade if Chubb is washed.

I don't see how this is not a good signing for the Texans. Joe Mixon is still a very effective RB, Chubb is a complimentary insurance piece. If he's productive this year, good. If he's not we're not worse off than before we signed him.

Even if they release Ogunbowale/Pierce/Beck to make room for him. What's the risk?

Does anyone think that any of the 3 players named in this post is irreplaceable? Is Beck even on the roster at the moment?

It's like paying for a car knowing the tires and engine are bad. I doubt Chubby will make the final roster, and if he does, he won't see much action.

Be nice if I was wrong, but I don't see a pot of gold at the end of this rainbow.
Well.... depending on the car and the price... thats not always a bad thing... some engines deserve replacing and as with condoms run around with bad rubbers you may regret it some day.

Exactly

If Chubb doesn’t make the final roster, I’ll be ecstatic at how great our RB room will be. He’s got some tread left and I’m looking forward to watching him run over defender’s like nothing.

I am most definitely glass 3/4 full on this one. I’m way more optimistic than many of you. He was moving very well in mini-camp by all accounts. I also saw his workout video - ok yes a workout isn’t a game.

Look, I’m not saying he will be 2022 Chubb. That was all-pro level. But I think his floor is high. Unless that knee really acts up, or there is some new injury during camp, I have zero doubt about him making this team.

From there we shall see. His upside is a true tandem mate for Mixon, and a guy that if Mixon goes down…we don’t miss a beat. Worst case, he’s a short yardage and goal line guy who can spell Mixon and give you 5-8 carries per game.

And BTW, I favor the true tandom RB to Mixon idea. If even at 80%, he’s that good. He may not have the same cutting ability anymore, but like Mixon, he can plum run you over. I see nothing but blue skies ahead for Chubb in 2025.

Ya that made no sense to me either. IF CJ doesn't make the final roster, our QB room will be great! Or something like that...

Details of Chubb's one-year deal is a max value $5 million, base value $2.5 million with $1.5M guaranteed: $575K signing bonus, $1.5M base salary, $925K gtd skill, injury, salary cap, plus up to $425K in per game active roster bonuses at $25K rate

Jonathan Alexander of the Houston Chronicle was on Texans All Access last night. He thinks only Mixon is guaranteed a roster spot. I disagree with that. I think Marks is guaranteed one as well by virtue of his rookie draft pick that they traded a future 3rd to get status. . But Mixon/Chubb/Dare will need to win one in camp. And Jordan/JJ Taylor are definite underdogs for an active roster spot but likely PS candidates again.

You dont think Mixon has a spot guaranteed?

Mixon/Chubb/Marks and one of Pierce/Dare.

Pounding table for Chubb, that his elite talent could duplicate Stingley recovery odds and beat Cloak n Dagger curse.
Mixon is still the alpha in room, Marks will factor more in passing game than expected, Pierce remains kick-off returner & depth while Dare is special teams ace and cold conditions FG kicker over Fair Weather Barin.
:snowday:

I agree that the most likely outcome looks to be that, but I do think there’s also a battle between Dare and Marks as they both look to be 3rd down backs primarily with Marks having the potential to be more.
I agree with TheRealJoker. I think Dare stays regardless of the competition--he's the ultimate jack-of-all-trades. Great at special teams (including kicking ;) ), good at pass-blocking, good at receiving the ball, and decent at running the ball (if there's a hole). I look at Marks as having a chance to upgrade the 3rd-down back spot, but having a guy that can fill in at multiple roles is pretty valuable. I think that Chubb vs Pierce is likely where someone can get cut/traded, keeping a third interior runner (and 5 RBs in total) might be too heavy at one position.
