Texans Hire Nick Caley as New OC

He was good at his job in LA. Also just saw a youtube video that was about his style. He listed the 1st thing as toughness wasn't negotiable. You have it or you don't play here.
He was good as far as we know but if we’re being blunt the Rams were great before he ever showed up and will likely continue to be good after he leaves.

Which isn’t a true reflection of him. I hope he’s good and there’s every chance he is but he wasn’t the reason the Patriots were good and he wasn’t the reason the Rams were good. That’s McVay - and my hope is enough of McVay rubbed off on him.

They can also say all they want during the offseason. I’m waiting to see what happens when it actually matters.

Come on people, we've got a lot of dead season left to take a proper wait and see approach. This is the time for speculation and adamant unprovable opinions!

Agreed. My question is: Will the Texans have the best offense in the league? Or merely the 2nd best offense?

From what I have heard from youtube vides and been reading if nothing else our OL is going to be mean, nasty and tough. Caley said in a presser that "toughness is non-negotiable and if you don't have it you won't be here". IMO, that is a huge plus. As our OL the last few years hasn't always shown a toughness or mean streak. And that single trait is a difference maker. That's players that are going to knock DL and LBs around and try to get them not wanting to have to deal with that come the late 3rd and 4th quarter.

I love to hear it. But even moreso I want to see it.

I'm pretty impressed with him saying that the talent on the roster will determine what the offensive scheme will end up being. I think a good example is that if your offensive line personnel can't run zone, that there are other schemes that they can attempt, as opposed to trying to fit a square peg into a round hole (Yes, I'm thinking of you Slowik.)
There was another guy that used to say we were a "gameplan offense" and "multiple"...how did that work out for us? lol. I kid! I kid!

To be fair, he was pretty good if he was just an OC, but when we made him the GM that was end and the writing was on the wall. Most of the QBs he had were pretty bad and he probably got the most out of them.

He has experience, just not as an OC. He was a coach in NE and worked with Brady (as a QB coach) and Hoodie. Then went to the Rams as a TEs coach with McVay. That is some fine company to learn from. And even Brady, as cerebral as he was was teaching him things. Yes, he could mess the bed. However, I IMO feel he is a better OC than many candidates that are with other teams. We shall see.
I know some people brought this up when he was hired, I know Cody Stoots mentioned it, but he was excited about Caley because he was a position coach that had to teach blocking (as a TE coach) in addition to the other aspects of the offense. IMO Slowik has a good offensive mind, however, he doesn't know the on-the-field in the trenches side of football at this level. I think he was good at concepts, but had a huge blind spot that we saw when he would...I don't know...put a dainty TE like Schultz to block someone like Greenard or pretty much any good Edge player.

I don't think Caley will have these issues. I think we have some talent on offense, and I am optimistic until I'm not about him. The OL may still not be good, but I don't think we're going to see the glaring issues we saw last year.

Slowik had a problem with adjusting. His half time adjustment for the offense was something like "ok we ran right 5 times for 6yrds and left for 10...let's run it up the middle and see if it works and WRs get open faster CJ is getting killed"

Oh trust me, you can find a dozen or so posts from me being nervous about a true multiple-front scheme (which Caley does have experience in). However this last post was more about determining which of the schemes the talent fits into in training camp, and then running that scheme throughout the year. Even that would be different than Slowik's zone-system or bust mindset.

This is where I'm at. Prove it, this includes CJ.

I know this is similar to the "Charlie Brown kicks the football" scenario for Texans fans, but if we actually had either an OC or someone on the staff that could effectively use our talent to adapt to schemes that targeted each team's defense that would be a best case scenario. I think there are reasons to believe that both BoB and Slowik were just blowing hot air (due to the lack of experience coaching different schemes) and couldn't implement a truly "multiple" scheme. I believe there is a glimmer of hope that maybe Caley may have the knowledge to pull it off. He's been a part of several coaching staffs that ran different schemes. Let's hope that Caley is the real deal, until he's not.

Going to be an interesting season regardless of the outcome. And interesting does not always mean "good."

I hope he and the Line put their money where his mouth is!! This line has lacked that trait for as long as I can remember. Give me Antonio "The Ninja" Smith and Cushing attitudes on this Line!

Why I wanted Booker so badly. Total line culture changer. For me in this draft, he’s the big fish that got away. They loved him too, or they wouldn’t have tried to trade to#12 to take him. Meanwhile most on this board would have choked on their wheaties if they traded up that high for booker.

We have VIP coach and offensive coordinator, I sure hope we have VIP players.
The only level I see lacking VIP players, at the moment, is OL. Every other level has at least 1 VIP. I'm really interested to see how Pierce does in TC & preseason at RB.

I assume you're considering TE to be part of the OL

The TE position is really lacking. I'm betting Lachey will be the best blocking TE on the team.
I project Schultz returning to a similar year as he had in 2023. Then Latchey should be the number two with a very good year also. I'm going to say this will be the best tight end year we've had in some time.

I’m thinking Stover, Lachey, and Jordan have a strong enough camp….it makes Schultz trade worthy. This only changes if Schultz has a camp for the ages and proves that he suddenly understands the intricacies of being a blocker.

Love your optimism

A trade of Schultz would give us 11.5 million savings but if he is having a camp for the ages, do we trade him and what could we reasonably expect under those circumstances?

I don
I don’t know about that.

I remember OB sending Lamar Miller on first down routinely for little to no gain. It was his thing.
t don’t think he was decent for us either but yes he absolutely is a decent coach. I mean… he keeps getting hired.

Didn’t the Saints just hire Brandon Staley to be their defensive coordinator?

Does that mean Brandon Staley is a good coach?

Being a bad HC doesn’t mean you’re a bad position coach or coordinator. David Culley is a great example of that. OK, fine, then how about Kubiak? Not that Kubes was a bad HC, just a better OC.

Brandon Staley is bad at both imo. I bet that Saints team gets absolutely wrecked. I’d say Dennis Allen is a proper example of bad head coach but great coordinator.

It really furthers my point. Getting hired doesn’t mean you’re good.
