Welcome to Houston C.J. Gardner-Johnson!!!

CJGJ speaks on why he hasn't been at OTAs. At least this guy speaks his mind and is accountable

This kind of stuff is either a non story when the games start or a big story… just depends on how CJGJ performs. As a new player, especially one presumably wanting a new contract, i’d be at OTAs and make my presence known immediately.

But he’s the vet who just won a Super Bowl. I’m not worried about him not being in camp ready to go when the time comes.

It's great that he is working out but he could have made the OTAs and then gone back to his working out. Handshake with the teammates; you good. Nod to coaches and whisper to Nick that if you have a 2025 similar to last season, you would really appreciate a healthy extension. I'll see him as a good rework of this year if Nick needs cap space in the next couple of months. I'm still hoping somebody releases a offensive guard that we could snap up.

They did already snap up Andrews and there's still a couple of good fa OG out there. I'm thinking they like what they have or they would be signing one of the fa.

Will be interesting seeing CJGJ battling Azeez for the ā€œvillainā€ role on defense this year. He ā€œwonā€ most annoying player last season as voted on by his peers. 14 votes for CJGJ while second place Christian Wilkins got 8.

ā€œ Last season we asked players to name the biggest trash-talker. This year, we broadened the question to most annoying, leaving it to the players’ discretion to decide what qualified as annoying. Well, last year’s biggest trash-talker, Philadelphia Eagles defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson, took the crown again.

ā€œYap yap yap,ā€ one player said of the sixth-year veteran.ā€

CJGJ was also voted biggest trash talker for the 2023 season despite playing only two games. He garnered 24.6% of the vote. Jalen Ramsey came in second with 16.2%.

ā€œ Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who is now with the Detroit Lions after spending last season with the Philadelphia Eagles during their Super Bowl run, tops the list. He did so despite not playing since Week 2, when he injured a pectoral muscle.
ā€œI think that’s just kind of like his schtick,ā€ one player said. ā€œI don’t know if it necessarily works, but it’s what he reverts to.ā€ā€œ

As good a player as CJGJ is, I don’t see him getting a second contract in Houston. I expect him to play well this year, but he’s basically in the same situation here as he was in Philly… Bullock and Lassiter will get priority on extensions and they already paid Stingley. Just hope the vet helps this team win a Super Bowl like he did the Eagles while he is here.

ā€œā€œHowie (Roseman, Eagles GM) made that decision. I was fine with it,ā€ Fangio added.

Gardner-Johnson reposted a graphic featuring the quote to his Instagram story and added text that read, ā€œJust don’t do them young guys like y’all did me.ā€ He also included a 100 emoji and a flexed bicep emoji.ā€œ

Uhhhhhh the Lions wish he was there!

I remember when we expected most experienced players to skip these altogether. Now... panties get wadded up when players enjoy their offseason.

Ah, but he is not a Texans veteran returning for a new season. He's new to the team and his coaches and the playbook. Voluntary or not, I think he should have been there. And when he calls me to ask me what I think, I am going to tell him!

Agree with BB. I want all the healthy guys there getting better, working out, fine tuning…etc. but doubly so for a new guy. Based on what i have seen so far, CJ is already working on getting a one-way ticket out of town. Look at his history. Nuff said.

We talking about OTAs. We talking about voluntary OTAs. Not a game. Not a game. We talking about voluntary OTAs, man.

Why is the football fan so wired about offseason workouts? I couldn’t care less what they’re doing in May and June, and only a little care in July and August.

I thought the CJ7 stuff was overblown, but mostly funny because the Texans basically straight faced lied, but I couldn’t care less who’s at or not at voluntary workouts, and care even less about what they’re doing in shorts with QBs in red protection shirts. If CJGJ is here for mandatory minicamp and training camp, then does any of this missing voluntary OTAs or the misguided perceptions people now have of him for it, matter? The answer is no, by the way.

When the season begins and it very much does matter and we see someone blow a coverage, run a wrong route, not diagnose a coverage or understand the hot route for a blitz it will very much matter.

There’s so little practice time in the NFL these days and when you’re learning a new system you need all the time you can get.

For a rookie, maybe. For a veteran, probably not so much.
Huge overreact from fans. And like I said, as long as you’re there for when you’re required to be there, it will be fine. There’s 6 weeks of training camp for a veteran to get acclimated. And if he can’t, he probably shouldn’t have been signed anyway.

meh.....three or four games into the season and we'll be seeing what's what. Preseason games are only worrisome if they're doing really well, because that means they won't be in the regular season. Playing like trash in the preseason is normal.

Sorry, but gotta disagree. This isn't 1978 with six weeks of highly physical two-a-days in full pads in the hot west Texas sun. You can barely get one practice these days.

Every single rep matters. Mental reps matter. Physical reps matter. Bonding and collaborating with teammates and coaches matter. Literally - it all matters. This is what separates the JJ Watts, who got every single ounce of talent from his body...from the wanna be's. You think JJ would be out somewhere tweeting or in the building working his ass off to max out his talent?

Let me pose this question. Why is it that CJGJ hasn't stuck anywhere in his NFL career? You think it's a coincidence that he gets run out of town on a rail in short order? It's just for cap space?

Sure it is. wink. wink.

What's the over/under on length of stay here. If I give you 1.5 years, are you taking the over or the under?

Huh how in the world did you come to that conclusion?

Attitude. Look at his tweets. Look at not showing up for OTA’s. Not a Meco guy imho. I could see him get another 1 year contract…but its only a matter of time until his sideshow circus pulls up its tents and heads to another town.

Like his talent and i think he will take this secondary to a new level. But history shows he wears out his welcome. Quickly. Are you suggesting history doesnt matter?

It is not about the event but rather the players attitude. Do I think he will not be productive in regular season? No but we all know that team camaraderie means a lot. Players constantly talk about getting together outside of the game so why not at an OTA event?

And it’s late May/early June. When the mandatory stuff comes up and he’s not there for that, then we might have an issue. Until then, much ado about nothing. But because he’s not here for voluntary stuff, people are analyzing his Twitter feed and already have their minds made up about him.

Again, a few get togethers in May and June isn’t going to make any more difference than getting down to business for 6 weeks in camp. I mean it’s not like they’re padding up at all right now.

He’ll show up for mandatory work, he’ll be welcomed by teammates, and that will be that.

Let’s be real though we’ve seen guys come and go who only do the mandatory stuff. They’re talked up and are deemed ā€œgood teammatesā€ but they either don’t get new contracts or they’re the first out the door when it comes to financial cuts.

I have not heard anything bad from the Eagles brass. Have you and if you did can you post it on here.

Its not what they say. Teams generally dont throw guys under the bus. Watch what they do. They needed some cap releif, and the first guy they were going to cut is CJGJ. Texans made the trade instead, but he was about to be cut…again.

Why are you ignoring his history. Where has this guy stuck? Do i need to post his tenure length at each stop?

He is like David Banner in the old Incredible Hulk. Might be before your time. In each episode, he would land in a new town, ingratiate himself with the locals…and fit right in…until something made him mad. Thats when Lou Ferrigno as the Hulk would show up, destroy the place…and once he turned back to Banner…he would pack up, amd hit the road with his thumb out, looking for a new town.

As i said…hes a talented player. I am looking forward to seeing him elevate this secondary but he wont be a long term amswer. Hes already slowly…but surely…rubbing people the wrong way. Talking **** about the Eagles isnt helping either. Its like when your new GF cant shut up about her old one and how annoying they were, and ya i cheated on him..i mean he deserved it. How long you going to be with that woman?

HISTORY MATTERS

I read an article yesterday that said he did not always follow the play scheme and found himself out of position. Led me to believe that he believes in himself over what coaches wanted. His productivity kept him out of doghouse..until Philly let him go twice. Article had him saying he was the guinea pig to see if the system would work. He said was it the system or was it his skills?

Sure. So we just assume that’s the way it plays out for everybody at all times?

Look, I’m not saying dude is going to be an exemplary teammate, nor am I saying he’s going to be a cancer. I’m just saying that in late May/early June voluntary workouts, that the peanut gallery is overblowing it and already have etched in stone in their brains of how it’s going to be.

Remember that time that really cool kid donated his 1st NFL paycheck to cafeteria workers affected by a hurricane and everybody loved him and then he turned out to be the biggest douche bag to ever walk the face of the earth? Cool history.

Picking one incident out of his entire history. Nice. Where’d you get those comebacks from?

He's still a dawg, and stuff like this is why he never gets a long erm contract.

With this said, I'm confident he will be ready for the season and play really well in a loaded secondary. If the Texans defense stays healthy (particularly at the CB position) the Texans will probably have the top defense in the NFL. This defense is absolutely loaded. If CJ can have an avg yr and not turn the ball over it really bodes well for the Texans playoff chances. IMHO

I expect this to be CGJ's fate and I'm fine with this.

I also expect CGJ to play very well this season. Adding another play maker that can play/deep/slot CB or in the box is invaluable and something the Texans defense was really missing last yr.

& there's nothing they are allowed to do in camp, even less in OTAs to prevent that. This team, just like every team with high turnover, is going to struggle the first 4 weeks of the season.

That's the NFL we have today. They took away a preseason game because nobody did anything the 4th preseason game. They absorbed it into the regular season, extending the season.

Now teams do in the 3rd preseason game what they used to do in the 4th... it's now just as worthless as the 4th preseason game was.

The whole offseason is a joke.
