A reversal of performance is as much on the organization as it is CJ. We've seen what Stroud is capable of. Now, the front office and coaches need to build around that. Mistakes have been made, but I do like the direction taken this offseason in terms of roster building and coaching staff. But there's one thing for certain. Stroud will get a massive extension next offseason.I remain skeptical re. giving Stroud an early extension without seeing a significant reversal of performance to positive.

Houston Texans' Most Important Extension Candidate Is An Obvious One
Who's the most urgent name to extend on the Houston Texans' roster?
Jared Koch | May 25, 2025
Most changes this year have admittedly been to help Stroud. So what happens if this doesn't affect a significantly positive change? Let me make it clear, I hope that this is something that doesn't happen.A reversal of performance is as much on the organization as it is CJ. We've seen what Stroud is capable of. There's always ifs & buts. But there's one thing the Texans can learn from Jerry Jones. Don't make the mistake of stretching out the decision to extend your QB. It's only going to cost the team $$$ and cap flexibility. Most changes this year have admittedly been to help Stroud. So what happens if this doesn't affect a significantly positive change? It is yet to be seen if extending Prescott was a great move at any cost. There's always ifs & buts. But there's one thing the Texans can learn from Jerry Jones. Don't make the mistake of stretching out the decision to extend your QB. It's only going to cost the team $$$ and cap flexibility.
I think the point is that you're going to extend him anyway because there won't be any better options, but it's going to cost you a lot more.It is yet to be seen if extending Prescott was a great move at any cost.
Evidently, over the past year Jerry gave no thought to going in a different direction via FA or the Draft.I think the point is that you're going to extend him anyway because there won't be any better options, but it's going to cost you a lot more.
Jerry is old and stubborn. He hasn't been willing to learn from his own mistakes for a long long time. But the Texans can.Evidently, over the past year Jerry gave no thought to going in a different direction via FA or the Draft.
The unfortunate truth in QBs is that they’re a FAR better team with Prescott than without. It is yet to be seen if extending Prescott was a great move at any cost.
Unfortunately he will get the big extension which will be the beginning of the end of the Texans championship aspirations.A reversal of performance is as much on the organization as it is CJ. Solak's 100 things to know for the 2025 NFL season ... 100 days out
There are 100 days until the 2025 NFL season kicks off. Let's celebrate with 100 big thoughts, predictions, stats and situations to watch.www.espn.com
I'm always hesitant about later branches plucked off coaching trees. The first few Sean McVay assistants probably have the goods, but the fourth, fifth and sixth options were probably in the back of the line for a reason. But Caley, who spent the past two years in the McVay incubator, was a longtime offensive coach for the Patriots before joining the Rams, so he isn't really a continuing chip off a chip off a chip off the block.
No offense was held back more by coaching errors last season than Houston's unit. If Caley is even league average as a Year 1 playcaller, expect the Texans to finally deliver on their 2024 preseason hype.
I didn't realize this until I saw Jaguars reporter Michael DiRocco's note in our full schedule preview: The Jaguars and Texans haven't played since the Azeez Al-Shaair hit that ended Trevor Lawrence's 2024 season and incited a bench-clearing brawl. Well, they'll play in Week 3. Expect some pregame shenanigans and first drive tone-setting.
Entering last season, the Texans' target hierarchy was clear: Nico Collins, then Tank Dell, then Stefon Diggs, then Dalton Schultz. Entering this season, it is anything but clear. Collins and Schultz are still around, but Diggs joined the Patriots and Dell's major knee injury leaves both WR2 and WR3 spots up for grabs.
For the two open battles, the Texans drafted two rookies, both from Iowa State: Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel. They'll compete with Christian Kirk for a suddenly large pile of targets. Houston desperately needs to be able to punish teams that double-cover Collins and must hit on one of those rookies -- or see a big post-injury resurgence from Kirk -- to pull it off.
The Texans have made consecutive AFC divisional rounds, but we don't talk about them like we talk about the Ravens or Bills. I think that's wrong. The Texans' defense can get burned in its aggressive style (see: all games against Lamar Jackson), but over the past two seasons, it has shown up in key postseason moments and against top opponents more often than not. The Texans' offense disappointed last season, but the potential for an immediate bounce-back is there under a new coaching staff.
ESPN BET has the Texans with the sixth-best odds to win the AFC. They're behind the Bengals and Chargers, which just doesn't reflect the reality of those three teams over the past few seasons. I'm buying Houston.
Texans dangerous!
Unfortunately he will get the big extension which will be the beginning of the end of the Texans championship aspirations.
Didn't hear NC say it at the meeting with the fans/season ticket holders (I forgot which one it was)? He said that we're (him and Demeco) aren't worried about the OL, so YOU shouldn't be! Stop worrying and drink this kool-aid that will make you forget that our line looked like they were playing lacrosse and not football.Agreed. This has a minor to fair chance to blow up in their faces and completely derail this season. Nick failed to adequately address offensive line, and the strategy seems to be to play pin the tail on the donkey and hope it all magically works.

I think you're right. It wasn't clear from my post, but I think that we should definitely be concerned with the 2025 OL. It's not like the Texans have ever shown to be able to fix their OL with the rare exception when we had the line of Brown-Smith-Myers-Brisiel-WinstonMy guess, he wasn’t referencing the 2024 OL, but the teams outlook on he 2025 OL.
On Texans being underrated this offseason:

The teams window will be directly related to how much cap space the QB takes up. They will have a 4-5 year window after CJ signs his new contract. When the McNair’s and Caserio decide it’s time for CJ to get his new contract….it’ll obviously be based on the success he has this season. That’ll mean they plan on remaining viable for the next 8-10 seasons. The NFL will continue to bump the cap as contracts in general get elevated. The Texans will keep their core intact, and reload thru the draft and via inexpensive but sound free agent signings. They won’t need big name/money free agents if they keep their core players in the fold.
That allows us five to six years for a Super Bowl. If we do not have it by then perhaps it's time to break it down and start again? The teams window will be directly related to how much cap space the QB takes up. They will have a 4-5 year window after CJ signs his new contract.
I couldn't agree more unless CJ would take a team friendly deal but even then what young man in his 20's would do that from my experience not many if any at allThat allows us five to six years for a Super Bowl. If we do not have it by then perhaps it's time to break it down and start again?
You're probably right about his injury given his history. I wonder how he hurt his ankle during the off-season. Fortunately he has months to get as healthy as possible for the season. The Texans are being very hush hush about Mixon and his absence from OTAs. In week 2 last season, Mixon suffered a high ankle sprain and missed 3 weeks He later in the season sustained another ankle injury. Both of these injuries were secondary to hip drop tackles. Ever since his week 2 injury, he has not been the YouRB we expected. He now in the offseason has re-injured his ankle and was seen in a boot earlier this month. He is not expected to be active until at least TC, and we will probably see Pierce being RB1. This past injury is most likely another high ankle injury. As much as the Texans are downplaying his ankle injury(ies), to me, this does not bode well for expecting him to stay healthy and consistently perform well for the 2025 season.
I am going to respond here although this post will probably be moved to the correct thread discussing injuries. Like you, I am really hoping Mixon's injury does not derail his season. As with the offensive line, coaches may like our RBs better than many of us. No matter what happens with Mixon, one of Pierce, Dare, Woods or a combo needs to hit .. big.The Texans are being very hush hush about Mixon and his absence from OTAs. I'm very interested in seeing how this year's draft picks pan out. Caserio has got to get it right eventually on drafting a good OL or the Texans will be left trying to pay big time FA OL.When the McNair’s and Caserio decide it’s time for CJ to get his new contract….it’ll obviously be based on the success he has this season. His record on drafting offensive linemen is abysmal. It's funny, because his hit rate on secondary is high, but lineman....dude sucks like a hoover.
If Ersery is a beast, maybe that will break the spell. If Ersery is at least an average, functional, long term answer at tackle...I'd take that right now vs. what's behind door #2.
It wasn’t, unless you like 10-12 wins in the regular season and a good old fashioned barnyard whoopin in the playoffs every year….It is yet to be seen if extending Prescott was a great move at any cost.
Is that really on Prescott? He hasn't played terrible in the playoffs. It wasn’t, unless you like 10-12 wins in the regular season and a good old fashioned barnyard whoopin in the playoffs every year….
He was pretty bad in that game vs the Packers until garbage timeIs that really on Prescott? He hasn't played terrible in the playoffs.
I'm still hearing that it's the high ankle injury that is the main culprit and that required offseason surgery surgery which the Texans are not talking about.Odd they have this article up when apparently Peirce is RB1 going to OTAs. Reason for this is that Mixon has a mild injury and the team is not wanting it to get worse. It's a foot injury.

He was crap against the Packers. My point is, I guess, Dak is ok, but not anywhere near worth the money they threw at him.Is that really on Prescott? He hasn't played terrible in the playoffs.
The problem with that is that the money is the money and Jerry cornered himself with no leverage. The alternative is QB purgatory that you may not get out of for years. He was crap against the Packers. My point is, I guess, Dak is ok, but not anywhere near worth the money they threw at him.
Without thinking it through, I'm surprised that NFL hasn't gone to some sort of a arbitration similar to baseball. The problem with that is that the money is the money and Jerry cornered himself with no leverage. The alternative is QB purgatory that you may not get out of for years.
Edit: For whatever reason starting QB money is the same regardless of actual QB quality and performance. I wish there were tiers, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Purgatory is where the Cowboys are at because of Dak's contract. Better to find a sucker to trade him top and draft your next QB.The problem with that is that the money is the money and Jerry cornered himself with no leverage. The alternative is QB purgatory that you may not get out of for years.

So everything is on Dak, he’s the reason why that suppose to be top notch defense go missing in big games.Purgatory is where the Cowboys are at because of Dak's contract. Better to find a sucker to trade him top and draft your next QB.
Dak was certainly not the only problem the Cowboys may have had. But Dak's contract certainly won't make it easier to bolster their defense. So everything is on Dak, he’s the reason why that suppose to be top notch defense go missing in big games.
