Welcome to Houston C.J. Gardner-Johnson!!!

Philly is in shock over this move. CJ is a very legit, borderline pro-bowl-type strong safety who definitely feels like SWARM to me. This isn't JAG. He's a clear upgrade over Murray...who got overpaid by the Jags, while I view CJ as a decent bargain. Two years left on the current contract.

Now we need one stud at DT, a LB who can cover, and a third corner who can play, and you've got a top-five D cooking up.

Really good trade if he's healthy.

Caserio/Ryans signed Rankins thinking he would be the DT you're talking about. I do expect another DT to be drafted but not as high as some might think. They're hoping Harris can stay healthy and become the LB you're looking for.

Murray's been my bane for years... but last year he played well, for the 4th/5th safety.

Where does CJGJ fit?

Ward, Bullock, Pitre, CDGJ
or
Ward, CDGJ, Pitre, Bullock?

Well, there goes another couple buildings up in flames.

How did Nick pull this one off?

He got a young, borderline all-pro safety, with two years left on a team friendly contract, for someone we were going to cut.

Huge flowers to Nick on this one.

I'm hoping it's Gardener-Johnson, Bullock, Pitre, then Ward. But this move gives DeMeco all sorts of flexibility when matching up with teams so the 'numbered positions' don't really matter. It's way to early to say it out loud (so I'll type it), but this will likely be the best secondary the Texans have ever put on the field. :winky:

Yup.give me a 3rd legit corner, whether FA or draft and we are cooking with butane. QB’s will be holding the ball…and that’s when the real fun starts.

I’m guessing he can man cover because that’s what Demeco has wanted from the safety position.

I know he’s well regarded but I can’t help but remember when during the season he was getting clowned a lot for really running his mouth and then getting burned for what felt like 5 games in a row for TDs.

Happy about the move, seems like a good fit and from what I recall about trades basically risk free as the contract isn’t huge and pretty sure he can be cut at zero dead cap cost. That said I’ve heard he may be angling for a new contract so who knows.

The Philadelphia Eagles made an unpopular decision to trade C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans on Tuesday morning. In exchange for CJGJ, the Birds acquired 2022 first-round pick Kenyon Green.

Let’s learn more about the Eagles’ newest offensive lineman by getting a Texans perspective on him. Here’s what Scott Barzilla of Battle Red Blog had to say about Green through answers to my questions.

1) How would you recap his time with the Texans?

I’m seeing visions of the Hindenburg, Titanic, and maybe a SpaceX rocket or eight dancing in my head. Green came in out of shape in his rookie season, took a year off to get in shape during his second season, and was benched mid game in the middle of the season last year because he was getting beat like a New York mugging victim. He finally went down for the season with an injury. I don’t know a single Texans fan that is sad to see him go.

2) Green was one of the very worst guards graded by Pro Football Focus in 2022 and 2024. Do you think there’s any hope for him to turn it around in a new environment or is he just a lost cause?

That’s an interesting question. He was a first round pick, so there must have been something there. I think if any organization can get anything out of him it is Philly. You guys probably have the best OL coach in the business. I’m not sure what the breakdown here was. I’m sure part of it was simply missing on the prospect. Some of it was a lack of preparation on his part. Yet, I can’t help but think he just didn’t get the coaching he needed. Maybe he gets it in Philly.

3) What are his strengths?

He actually has been a strong run blocker when he is at his best. If you ask him to simply hit the hell out of the guy in front of him, he can actually do that well.

The Eagles GM, a Jewish guy from Brooklyn with a law degree, probably barely knows the difference between a cut block and a chop block but he's got one of the best Oline coachs in the business, fella named Jim Stoutland, who does and also knows everything else about Oline play will very likely make a posiitve contributor to the Ol of Green, but we sure as hell couldn't so this deal is a winner for us.

I'm hoping that with the flexibility in coverage that Gardner-Johnson brings to the group, DeMeco is able to scheme up some schemes that takes the other teams best player out of the game. That seemed to be a flaw in the defense last year, and I'm sure everyone remembers Justin Jefferson and Kelce getting wide open, despite the fact that were clearly the number 1 targets. At some point you have to commit to locking out the #1 option.

I would argue we had a top 5 defense last year. We just couldn’t score in the second half of games or the offense would just have short time of possession. That gassed the defense.

I also would argue with these additions and if we remain healthy, we should have the top defense or be near second.
I get the gassed defense argument & I think we had a championship level defense. But, they should be able to make anybody 1 dimensional.

This season i don't think we'll be using the "gassed" excuse regardless how the offense stumbles through the season.

I would settle for a stud at DT/NT

Give me Jacob Parrish CB, Kansas St. A great athlete perfect slot CB and although small his game reminds mea lot of Sainistil's. Of course I'm terrible at evaluating DB's.

More like, if the Eagles O-line coach fixes Green, it will cement the Texans reputation of being unable to develop players.

You can bet I will be watching.

Sometimes the glass is half full.

I'm starting to think this trade was too lopsided, there's got to be a handshake deal that is going to surprise us on draft day. Like, Philly can invoke a trade for 25 if player they want is available. That trade is going to look lopsided from our side, but will even this one out.

Interesting… You think NFL GM’s have that much trust in each other?

Eagles wanted to get rid of CJGJ due to financial concerns. Green is a flyer. It's unlikely to work but it's not out of the question that he becomes at least a decent backup for them.

Nick did a great job getting a good piece for the defense. I view CJGJ as a second round value, so in essence pick 15 becomes a second round safety.

Howie Roseman: Hard decision to trade C.J. Gardner-Johnson, but have to consider whole picture

The Eagles made the Super Bowl with safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson in the lineup in 2022 and they won it after bringing him back in 2024, but those results didn’t stop the team from trading Gardner-Johnson to the Texans this month.

General Manager Howie Roseman had his first chance to discuss the trade, which included a pick swap and sent guard Kenyon Green to Philly, when he spoke to reporters at the league meetings on Monday. Roseman said that Gardner-Johnson did a great job for the team, but that he had to look at the number of young starters that are on the roster and coming up on new contracts when making decisions about retaining veterans.

“Every dollar that you spend is a dollar less that you can spend on some of these younger players that maybe you want to retain,” Roseman said, via Dave Zangaro of NBCSportsPhiladelphia.com. “Getting out in front of it was important to us. And again, hard decisions. Not asking anyone to agree with them but that’s part of our job.”

Roseman’s success in the draft is a big reason why the Eagles are the current Super Bowl champions, but it comes with a price and it comes with making the kind of tough calls that lead to the departures of good players because of what’s coming down the road.

The challenge is that DeMeco seems to like to bring in players that ride the line between slightly crazy, hot-headed, and productive. (So much for the old choirboy argument.) He'll have to tamp down some of CJGJ's social media blurbs and (some of the) smack talk on and off the field. But getting another ball-hawk on defense that plays with aggression seems like a perfect fit, so long his mouth fits into the locker room.

I'm looking at it as a 15th pick that should not have been selected and cannot play; broke down with injuries that morphed into a starting free safety! I still giggle a little bit when I think about that trade.
