Houston Texans: Danielle Hunter

The draftsperts are telling us that the depth DEs go into 3rd if not 4th round this year. I would be tempted to get one this year assuming the more pressing WR, DT, IOL positions are handled in some combination of free agency, trades, other draft picks. The guy could be rotation guy this year with the idea he could step up in 2026.
J T Tuimoloau from Ohio State 6'4 270 . 61 tackle 2 for loss, 12.5 sacks and 3 passes defended screams 'Nick's guy ' but so does his coworker Jack Sawyer.

Given the money constraints and his age…I don’t see it. They need to draft his replacement on day 1 or 2 next off-season. Let him play out the contract this year, and bid him a fair Adieu. Barnett should be the 3rd guy. I like him and he’s great value…but he isn’t special as a pass rusher. Let’s find the next Hunter next off-season.

I think DT/DE- Ty Robinson (Nebraska / 6-6 @ 305 lbs) would be my target in RD5. He should be there and would fit the bill as a backup to Hunter.

Please hold my coffee. DE- Ty Robinson has measured out at 6-5 @ 288 lbs…..he just ran the 40 in 4.83!!!!! He’s my Texans new DE in training. He’s going to move up from RD5 I think.

Top DE’s are often early picks in the draft, but with a year behind Hunter & Anderson and then moving into a starting role with Anderson across from him, DeMeco as DC, surely it’s the perfect situation to develop a later round pick for the role.

It’ll be interesting to see what we do with the DL, Edwards, Fatukasi and Barnett have all been great, but likely get a decent pay rise if retained via FA. Autry seems like a cut/trade candidate but was a constant threat when available to sub in. Can DeMeco consistently pick truffles at the back end of FA who will look that good or did they strike gold and need to keep hold of those pieces?

Ty Robinson (Nebraska) is my choice. He has some major upside. Measurables are like Watt.

Only if Hunter is traded do we need to replace this year. Edge rushers are deep in this draft so I'm unconcerned about a replacement for 2025.

If edge rushers are deep in this draft, then draft one this year to replace Hunter next year.
Usually, I would agree however I think we need to address other positions through round five. If needed and I'm not sure we will replace Hunter, we can get a replacement by the end of day two that could start. Anyone playing opposite of Anderson would look pretty good. And of course we would have hopefully Derek Bennett to start opposite if needed.

I was surprised how Dylan Horton performed post cancer diagnosis. I didn’t even expect him to be on the field last season and he was a solid rotational DL.

I am hopeful that Horton has fully beaten cancer and can focus on developing as a DL with starter potential like the team drafted him to be in the 4th round two seasons ago.

Even the great ones tend to have relatively quiet rookie seasons, Anderson & JJ Watt both had good rookie seasons before looking like the real deal 2nd year.

You need Antonio Smith across from your great DE, best to draft later from a deep class and develop, and hopefully learn from a great role model in Hunter.

I also like that they are different characters, Will Anderson is an amped up exciteable type of fellow while Hunter is the quiet professional type who does nasty things between the snap and the whistle. Both are great role models for a different type of work ethic that is equally effective when done right.

Get the production line running when you have a strength, is my way of looking at it.

Better than what you have going on on the OL where you have all the talent in the world who seem to know exaclty what the minimum effort required to get themselves paid is, is see this as being a holdover problem from the D Hop/Watson/Tunsil era that’s been allowed to thrive under O’Brien. Hopefully you won’t always be drafting perennially in the top 5/top 10 or giving up multiple 1st round draft picks to trade for those players. Keep with the work ethic while you have it in the building.

The Hunter deal tells me how this team plans to be constructed.

Personally, with a defensive head coach who has a track record developing players and having them play above their contract, i’d rather build defense through the draft. Let the coaches develop players.

But it appears this team will pay to “strengthen a strength”. No arguments against the player. Hunter is a top 10 edge and has been for around a decade.

But this team is choosing to rely on the offensive staff to develop players through the draft and finding bargain FAs while spending to build a bully on defense.

I hope they are right.
