Texans Hire Nick Caley as New OC

If Casino is up to his usual trickery, did DeMeco approve of this hire before or after Caley was hired.

So more John Carroll and Patriots...I am being to see which Nick C. is running the offense
He wasn't running the offense last year, or Caley would've been the OC. I'm really interested to see what the offense looks like since Caserio/Caley/Schuplinski all share the same philosophies when it comes to the offense. They know what types of players they want on the offensive side of the ball. The offense will be on the same page, like Demeco's defense is. Good times are ahead. Hopefully CJ spends the offseason learning the new offense. That will be the key. They're going to add weapons for Stroud to succeed.

He better be a lot better. DeMeco's not going to get many of these "chances."

Demeco is the defensive guru and he got to pick his guy in Slowick to run the other side,
so now Casserio appears to be making the calls on offense and we did need a major change in the offensive leadership/direction.

One thing I liked hearing from Wilson: “Emphasis on running the ball.”

Now I hope that means running effectively. I’d also love to see them effectively rotate their RBs to keep Mixon fresh and at peak efficiency. Like the Pats used to do with their RBs.

This north/south style running game should suit Pierce better, but if he is going to be effective at it, he will also need help from his oline.

I'm wondering if the issue was that Slowik couldn't implement what Caserio wanted.

I absolutely do not have a problem with Nick being the thinktank behind our offense. I personally want a GM with a team vision & I want him to hire the HC & help that HC be successful. That's the way I think it should be done & never liked the "CEO" approach.

Demeco is the HC & he's got the team vision, but he's "obviously" letting Nick have the offense & I'm truly, truly happy about that. If we're going to have a Defensive minded HC, we need someone on the team that isn't going anywhere that steers the direction of the offense. Nick is as good a place for that to lie as any.

Well said T-K !

It doesn't matter which direction you run if the OL isn't opening holes. Pierce has a few hundred runs right up the OL's a$$.

That's kind of where I am. Keeping him has been nice but breaking a big one once a year isn't going to cut it when most of the other runs are executed like the guy is closing his eyes right after the handoff. Pierce just doesn't seem to have much in the way of vision but who knows. Maybe if the line gets it's collective feces together and makes a hole where it's supposed to be Pierce might get it going.

The 3 IOLs we're about to draft. :P

I think Shaq Mason will work better in a gap scheme, Tytus if we play him inside (assuming Blake Fisher comes along), Patterson is big enough to do it, and Kenyon Green probably fits better... though I have him at bust status atm. Really, Juice Scruggs is the only one who I think doesn't work in a gap scheme. I'm really hoping for a FA G, and a draft pick in the top 3 to compete.
Shaq been done. He was done before they traded for him. People were talking about everyone else, but Shaq has been a problem.

To me that would be horrific, I wouldn't want a GM influencing an offense from behind the scenes unless he had specific, successful experience in that area. What has Nick ever shown that says he could do what your preference is?

Good question. I somewhat agree with you. I like Caserio, but not sure what warrants him having total control over the offense.

Our inside OL has shown itself to be suspect. I especially think that Scruggs is not strong enough to handle the middle.
After we drafted him, I worried that the spine injury from his car wreck in 2019 would physically limit his strength. Something like that carries a risk of chronic impingement of a nerve. The reported injury was a fractured vertebra, which can be benign, but I doubt that was the only injury after being ejected from a car.

FIFY. You had a good post going and then you couldn't help yourself. There's no need to hope when your starting argument is a false narrative.

It's about people doing what they are good at. Nick has a lot of experience not only in personnel, but also in practices & game day.

The coach is still the coach, but Nick decides if it's going to be a WCO, Spread, EP, whatever. Drafting players for a coach, especially an offensive coach when you have a defensive HC, you have to start over every time you change OC for whatever reason.

With Nick in charge, you find a coach to fit your players & scheme.

I agree that Pierce seems to lack vision, but, IMHO, the OL main culprit. They don't do anything well except accumulate penalty yards. Is it coaching, talent, or a combination of both? I dunno.

Since he was given the option of conservative nonsurgical treatment, the fracture was most likely a nondisplaced compression fracture. Chronic pain limiting mobility is commonly a long-term problem. Arthritic changes after 5 years are probably in play.

Scruggs had hit a patch of black ice, and the Pontiac G6 he was driving went off the road and rolled over somewhere around Meadville.

Karen [his mother], who was living in Atlanta at the time, hung up with Viglione and started calling people. She received an ominous text message from the mother of one of Juice’s former teammates, a nurse who asked if Juice was in town but could not, due to HIPAA privacy rules, say much else. She got hold of a family friend who knew a state highway patrolman in Erie, who told her there had been an accident but that the lone person involved in the single-car crash was a John Doe – Scruggs had been thrown some 15 feet from the car through the driver’s side window, and his wallet, carrying his identification, flew even farther from the crash scene and wasn’t recovered for several days.

Eventually, they established who Juice Scruggs was, and Karen flew in from Georgia to be with her youngest child. When he came to, doctors informed Scruggs that, though he was lucky to be alive considering the severity of the crash, he had suffered a break of his L3 vertebra. He had two options: surgery to set the break with screws, which even if successful would severely limit the chances he would play football again, or let the break heal on its own for an indeterminate amount of time. After he was drafted, I researched the car accident but did not find much information other than he was injured and it was serious and the location of the fracture. This was interesting and I had not read it. Thanks for posting!

But let’s elevate the assistant train engineer even though his buddy hit a half dozen tractor trailers at train crossings last year. What’s a few dead truck drivers and mangled trucks when it’s just easier to hire the guy you know.

He really had everyone excited about the future in 2022. Maybe that was a peek at what's possible with him if there's even semblance of a hole to run through. I'd like to think so. He's like a damn freight train when he gets going.

The dude definitely runs angry! A 1-2 punch of Mixon & '22 Pierce would be fantastic, especially if the OL gets sorted & improves.
