Slowik and the offense

Listening to Demeco’s press conferences, it’s a case study in how to answer without saying anything. I don’t blame him for that. As for Slowik, even if he did answer without coachspeak, you probably wouldn’t understand it anyway.
It would be cool if they (he) would just come out & say, "Yeah, we've got some issues that we haven't squared away yet. It's a work in progress. We're confident we have the right people in the room & we're going to get it fixed."

But I could imagine the follow up questions.

I wonder how they would take it if the reporters were blunt & direct, "It's been 17 weeks. Shouldn't Shaq be playing better at this point?"

Haven’t you ever heard them say, “Yeah, we got some issues we need to get cleaned up”. Same thing, right?

As far a reporter getting blunt about an individual player’s performance, the response will always be, “we ALL should be playing better”. Throwing someone under the bus would be a ‘lose the locker room’ event.

I thought the OL would workout their issues as the season went along. I was wrong and this late in the season the OL is what it is at point.
Well, I’ve already given my take on what needs to be done with the OL. What’s yours?

Add an impact FA OL. Opp Texan had a great idea of center Ryan Kelly, then draft either Milum or Booker, plus draft the best blocking TE you can get. Draft another OT that can play OG in the 3rd.

Fix the OL with an influx of talent. I consider the TE to be an extension of the OL.

I agree with all that, but those overpaid ones need to be cut. Both Howard and that “pro bowl” Tunsil are in that group. We don’t need the OL to be the highest paid in the league. Draft the kids from the big schools, like Notre Dame, Michigan, and Ohio State.

We also need another big college wide receiver who can stretch the field, but that’s another discussion.

Why do you care about what guys are paid? I could care less about how much somebody is paid. It's about production and Tunsil has played fairly well this year considering that he was coming off of knee surgery and then sprained his ankle. He's finally healthy and playing well, especially since Howard took over at LG. Also Scruggs played well at RG.

At wr I hope they bring Dionte Johnson back and sign Bo Melton in FA, if they don't trade for Garrett Wilson.

I didn't pay attention to the jersey numbers, but the TV had Kenyon G starting at LG. Did Howard come in later? Or maybe did he start?

Unless it's the quarterback making 17% of the teams salary cap.

It's the same principal. If you're overpaying anyone it leaves less money for other players & just like you'd like to rollover as much as possible not over paying leaves more money available at any given time.

It's been proven about the QB.

Jets request interview with Texans OC Bobby Slowik

So the Jets are interviewing HCs without hiring a GM? This is fine.

Moving Howard to OG helped with picking up the stunts. Now that Scuggs has moved to RG I hope that picking up stunts on that side of the OL doesn't become an issue. Fisher/Scruggs are really young players and some mistakes will be made.
Agreed. At least it’ll be easier in the sense you can roll protection their direction and for the most part leave Tunsil/Tytus on an island.

If you were him how transparent would you be?

That's basically why they all have coachspeak. I know we fans want to know, but it's really not any of our business. Were I Slowik the goal would be to handle the problems internally. I'd be open & transparent with my coaches & players, with DeMeco my boss & Nick & Cal if they ask.

But I'm not going to tell the media too much.

Sorry I'm late to the party and didn't see this when you posted it but...

THANK YOU.

Any coach that's dispensing 'good' information in a press conference should be fired immediately.

I would prefer that there were no rules about having to give out accurate health information about the players. All that should be on a need to know basis and the only people who need to know are in that locker room and in that front office.

Every team should be an informational black hole. Every official word should be a smoke screen and a misdirection.

But.

That's just me.

(I also think they should be allowed to take any performance enhancing drugs they want as long as they work with the team medical staff and keep careful track of what they're taking. This would provide some amazing study information and medical breakthroughs. IMO.)

Reporter 1: Demeco, why did you rush seven on that particular play?
Ryans: it was the thing to do. How is your wife and the new baby? Did you get your grass cut?

Reporter 2: Coach, how is Christian Harris coming along?
Demeco: we are closely monitoring. I see you got your new shirt on. I really like it!

Reporter 3: Cap, what what do you expect out of CJ in this next game?

Demeco: he will play until he does not. Hey, are you wearing new shoes? They look good on you!

At the end of the 2023 season, I seen this partial statement by CJ regarding Slowik "Of course, tailored his coaching to what was here at the Texans". I wonder what that consisted of and if player related, was it addressed in FA and the draft. We know there was an upgrade at RB1 and WR2 (short lived).

Where i’m at with Slowik:

The team knew what they were getting into hiring a first year OC without playcalling experience. They could’ve hired a proven playcaller like Kingsbury but opted for Slowik because DeMeco had a previous working relationship with him and they felt like he has high-end upside.

The offense took a step back yes… do you think Slowik will improve?

I am furious with the last 20 plays he called this season (19 passes 1 run and 5 sacks allowed). But I think he can learn from it and be a better coach next season.

Proven offensive coordinators are usually in the head coach conversation, not making lateral moves to OC. The only candidate I could think of is Chip Kelly. And yes, i’d take Kelly over Slowik but I think it’s more likely Kelly and Slowik stay where they are at.

That being said, Kelly could be this team’s Spagnuolo if DeMeco can recruit him (high end coordinator that can’t get a head coaching job anymore).

Slowik needs help. I don’t fully trust his feel for the game’s flow, especially in-game adjustments. It's like the offense tries to execute a pre-determined plan, regardless of how the opposing defense is reacting. That approach works at the start of games with scripted plays, but eventually, you need to be able to recognize what’s working and what’s not. I felt like the team didn’t mix things up enough to exploit defenses’ weaknesses, nor did they adjust the tempo to keep the defense on its toes. The times they did make adjustments, it seemed like it was when they were already trailing.

I’m wondering if it’s a personnel issue, player limitations, or if Slowik is just too green. But, some of this was apparent even in year 1. At the time, I know I was so enamored with the new beginnings (staff and players) that the concerns were overlooked because of the excitement around the wins. So IMO, as mentioned by some, DeMeco needs to consider bringing in an experienced coach to help Slowik, whatever the title is, as long as it works for egos. We just wrapped up year 2, there’s plenty of room for growth but if Slowik returns for year 3, the progress needs to be significant - leaps and bounds compared to the first two years.

I believe Caserio and Ryans have Slowick and Strausser’s replacements in mind. Look forward to seeing who they bring onboard.

My guess as to how this came about….a few of the offensive players came forward and tossed S&S under the bus, b/c it had to be done.

Man, I was adding my post when zshawn10’s post was landing.

A Kubiak & Munchak hiring would be great. The cherry on top would be….convincing Bruce Mathews to join OL staff.

I must admit I was surprised. Not because of performance. The Texans offense underachieved in 2024. Just thought Ryans believed there were extenuating circumstances. The players exit interviews may have played a part. Mixon was upset in multiple games. Stroud was not his usual chipper self. The window for winning is often shorter than you realize. I think Ryans felt a fresh start was the way to go.

Thinking out loud -

What is Klint Kubiak's success story? Other than being around a while and having a familiar last name, what has he accomplished in the NFL? If his name were Klint Kowalski, would he even be mentioned?

Mike Munchak was one of my favorite Oilers. You don't see OGs move like Munchak anymore. But like Klint, what are his success stories? A great player, but was he ever a great or even good coach? Are the Texans hiring a legendary name or an o-line coach that can create a winning unit?

I wanted to see an overhaul of the offensive line from scheme, to coaching, to players. But I would also like to see a history of success. Not just feel-good names.

I agree with your point on Klint Kubiak and would say the same thing about hiring Bruce Matthews. However, Munchak had a reputation for being an outstanding OL coach with the Titans, Broncos and even the Steelers. Based on his reputation, his strengths appear to be the ability to develop young OL who excel at pass blocking.

There are several articles similar to the one below with metrics and results that demonstrates what makes him a good OL coach. I hope the Texans can interview him before the Patriots.
