OL Coaching

Saw in a news item that Munchak would like to get back into coaching. I think his preference would be to return to the Titans and he does live in Tennessee, but he's been out of a job now for 3 years and maybe he'd consider coming back to Houston. The article says "Munchak is one of the best line coaches in the league" and to entice him back to Houston, maybe "overpay" with a really nice offer? Did we make him an offer in 2023? I think this would be a popular move.

Longshot...but I'd be super pumped if it happened. He'd get these guys playing to their ability. Love Mike Munchak. That man was a beast for the Oilers. Great lines, and he and Bruce Matthews were the best of the beasts. Man, I miss that kind of offensive line.

This needs to be Cal to Munchak.

If they aren't going to fire Slowik, to even have a shot at fixing the offense, you need to have someone to fill in for the experience he doesn't have. I'm reminded of when the Colts had Tom Moore to be the Senior Offensive Assistant (and I think Assistant Head Coach after that for many years) to help the OC keep the offense on schedule. No matter how brilliant Slowik is supposed to be (the jury is still out on that one) there is no substitute for experience. Slowik needs someone there to challenge his philosophy and tactics as this clearly isn't happening. Coach Ryans doesn't have the offensive experience to do this, so you got to bring someone else in.

Would love to see Munchak in this role or at least there to help the OL and the running game. He definitely could help with their OL evaluation which has been pretty terrible outside of maybe Blake Fisher.

The Titans already have a good OL coach and I doubt their HC would fire him (his dad). As far as here, the OL coach has to align with the OC, would Munchak gel with Slowik if he returns? Here's a name, Aaron Kromer. If Slowik doesn't come back, bring in Kromer to be OC and OL coach. He's done both and at the same time for a bit.

Not that I disagree with you, but this senior offensive assistant tells slow Wick you can't run four screens in a row and Slowik will agree? Maybe but I think it has to be someone like Assistant Head coach or Slow says no.

Also I'm concerned that bringing in an offensive position that is close to head coach in authority could not be received well by Demeco.

OC and Strausser have to go and the sooner the better for me. Let's see what we have in quarterback coach or even the wide receiver coach the rest of this season.

The big thing in the NFL is that the coaching falls outside the salary cap. You can go out and pay Munchak HC money to coach the OL if you wish, you can give Klint Kubiak big money to come in as OC and pay Gary big big money to advise part time.

If Hannah and Cal want it, they can go out and get the crème de la crème to coach their offence and let DeMeco concentrate on his area of expertise.

DeMeco needs to be a HC.

No. More. Kubiaks.

I don’t know where our OL coaches developed their skills but they were hired because they were considered to be qualified for the position. They have been challenged by playing musical chairs with positions, injuries and skill development. Do they need to be replaced or given better talent to work with? It seems to me that a good coach can get better results with our young players than what I’m seeing. I understand it takes several seasons for a OL player to fully develope however a top rated Ol prospect should be able to hold his own during his rookie year and get better as play time increases. I’m very concerned about the near future as bad habits are hard to overcome and the OL needs fixed now.

A lot of very good OL were considered near busts for their first year or two... Jake Matthews, David Baktiari etc...
I don't that that is the problem though

I'd have thought Tunsil, Mason, & Howard should have been enough continuity to allow two young OLmen to develop. I don't really understand why it's been so fugly this season. Even if those three guys weren't as good as I thought, they've played a lot of football with some success.

How the OL coaches can't fix this... is strange. Taking so long to get Kendrick Green or Broecker involved also strange.

Strausser went to some college named Chico State from '85 - '88, but never played football. Somehow he got a coaching position in '89 as a WR/TE coach at Menio(?). In '93 he first started coaching the OL, and from then until now has had 13 different stops, never staying long with any one team. He landed in the NFL in 2017, and has coached with Denver, Indy and now Houston.

Time to push him out the door to move on to his next team.

Sounds

Damn !! First thing he does at every stop is find out where the bodies are hid ! This doesn't remind y'all of somebody ??? A little facework and it's Jack Easterby !

There must be a change in the off-season….and Mike Munchak would be my top target. Heck, I’d even ask him to offer an OL position to Bruce Mathews if he wanted. After mostly 20+ years of OL futility, it’s time for a serious change.

You guys do realize that Munchack has 3 years on his resume as a HC?
He is 63, so maybe he wants more now than position coaching: OC, assistant HC in addition
to OL coach ?

I wonder what his ideas are, or would be, as an offensive coordinator? Or who he would have in mind to be his assistant, while he kept the secondary role as the OL coach.

If he had his eye on a HCing position, it likely wouldn't happen at this time with the Titans.

Edit: Maybe move Jarrod Johnson up as the assistant OC?

I would have no issues with him as asst. HC/OL
That's what they brought Gibbs as his title
Having Munchack as Demeco's OL coach & senior advisor (asst-HC) all sounds too good to be true because it's my impression that Munchack no longer has any professional or personal ties to the area, the city or the Texans' organization, i.e., there very well may be nothing here for him
anymore.

I don’t see it. I mean I’m sure he would accept a promotion but the reality is… all he is is an OL coach. He was terrible as an HC. After his 3 year stint as a HC, he went back to being an OL coach for 8 more years before being fired.
