Welcome to Houston CJ Stroud

Here is good breakdown from Josh McCown who thinks Stroud's skillset is similar to Joe Burrow.

I can sure see why McClain will probably be an OC within 2 years and a HC soon after. Dude knows what he is talking about. I like the Joe Burrow comparison. If CJ is that level we will be ok.

Evaluating Texans QB C.J. Stroud's NFL projection with Buckeyes Wire

When the Houston Texans took quarterback C.J. Stroud with the second-overall pick in April’s draft it signaled a seismic change for the franchise that is sure to affect the team’s trajectory for years to come. Desperately in need of a quarterback, the Texans settled for Stroud after Bryce Young, the purported best signal caller in the class, was taken with the first overall selection.

But to hear Joshua Keatley of Buckeyes Wire tell it, Houston’s fans shouldn’t feel like their beloved Texans settled.

In speaking to Keatley shortly after the draft, it became quickly apparent that Stroud was a premier playmaker at Ohio State, and that his game should translate well to the NFL level early in his career.

“Stroud has elite arm talent that allows him to hit every bit of grass on the field and he will immediately enter the league as one of the most accurate passers, especially when talking about the deep ball,” Keatley explained. “The Houston Texans desperately needed a franchise passer, and they got one in Stroud, who is a prototypical pocket passer who could have been the first selection in most NFL drafts.”

Though he was bullish on the quarterback’s compatibility with the Texans’ new-look offense, Keatley wasn’t so enthusiastic about the quarterback’s draft slot, though he made it clear that the role Stroud will play for the team should outweigh any qualms to that end.

“I don’t want to say Houston got a steal, because it was the second pick in the draft, but Stroud is the ideal fit for Houston, even over a guy like Bryce Young,” Keatley said. “Young may be the better prospect, but Stroud is the better fit for the Texans. Stroud has the higher floor and is much less of an injury risk due to their size difference and obvious difference in play style.

“Stroud has an even-keeled personality that should be well equipped to handle the hardships and rebuilding process ahead. I know there were rumors that the coaching staff was not sold on Stroud, but my assumption is that Stroud is a much more laid back person than the other top tier quarterback prospects, but with the situation bound to be frustrating in Houston for a few years, that should lead to his personality and patience being a huge benefit.”

While some may see Keatley’s assessments of Stroud as a sort of homerism, it seems that the Texans would tend to agree with his thorough assessment of the field general’s skillset and moxie. Time will tell if Stroud can rise to stardom in Houston and help rebuild the ailing franchise, but if Keatley’s breakdown and the Texans’ decision to draft him with the second overall pick is any indication, the team should have a rock-solid rookie slinging the ball in 2023 and for years to come.

2 thing I noticed about this article

1. The coaching staff was not sold on Stroud

2. Keatley failed to mention his lack of brain power

Homerism article, some posters will overlook point #1 due to homerism.

Author (verbatim): I know there were rumors that the coaching staff was not sold on Stroud

Steel: The coaching staff was not sold on Stroud. FACT!
Rumors not facts.

Do you expect somebody in the Texans org to say there opinions on Stroud was divided? Because I know without Cal/Ryans/Caserio saying this, it didn't happen.

Perhaps I misinterpreted the point you made then. It appeared that you were presenting a statement of confirmation, based on your following statement that posters will overlook your first point because of homerism.

Here is a really good analysis regarding how the 49ers use pre-snap motion to help Garoppolo and Purdy be efficient QBs. It also goes into detail on how Stroud performed using pre-snap motion to identify the defenses.

"Stroud, with his ball placement, ability to read the field, and underrated sense of how to attack defenses while on the move, seems like a natural fit. Two of the top five quarterbacks in EPA in the NFL last season with the benefit of pre-snap motion were Purdy and Jimmy Garoppolo, so that’s obviously a San Francisco staple.

Per Sports Info Solutions, Stroud in 2022 completed 98 of 137 passes for 1,233 yards, 632 air yards, 17 touchdowns, one interception, and a passer rating of 135.7 — that passer rating led all FBS quarterbacks."

2 rbs, 1 te, 2 wrs. Is one of those rbs actually an H-back/FB? And the wrs? Collins/Hutchinson and Metchie/Dell? Lots of different combinations for our offense. Looking forward to seeing the results.

I expect a constant barrage of blitzes by every opposing defense we face. That's always the case for rookie qb's but will be more so considering cj's deficiency in college. The end result will be repeated check down passes ala late Carr. Running backs may get more targets than the wr's in his first 3-5 starts.

If the ol can't gel fast, we'll see a lot of max protection. If protections are called by the center, that spot will be crucial. I don't like a rookie tandem at qb AND center. If Juice does start, he'll have to bring it. A batch of young wr's still learning their craft might serve to exacerbate the issue.

We can offset these issues with a strong run game, a variety of snap counts, a qb who picks his spots to scramble effectively, and dare I say, a competent screen game.

After watching some film when we drafted him, it became apparent to me cj is super reliant on rhythm in the passing game. If a defense gets him off his clock early, it's going to be hard to watch. If we protect him well, he's going to dice up defenses like a pissed of Gordon Ramsey on an onion.

We'll see.

Yep, Stroud should be successful, no excuses.

Seems like a lot of angst among the crowd here, which is surprising to me.
I think I have said it here before, but I'm of the philosophy of, if you don't have a franchise QB, you try to go get one. The Texans did just that and took one of the top, if not the top, QB in the draft. Does that mean he's going to be the next Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes or any other great QB in the league? No, because he could easily be the next Josh Rosen. However, the rookie wage scale allows for a team to take that chance and it not ruin them for the next 5 years if wrong. Hell, the Texans could suck again this year and they take another QB in 2024. The Cardinals have already shown that can happen.

I'm also not a fan of worrying about things that haven't even happened yet. Will he hold out in 4-5 years? Will he ask for more money? Is he all about getting paid? These questions are completely beside the point right now. ALL players want to get paid, ALL agents want their players to be the highest paid. Worrying about it now is pointless at best.

Now, Stroud...
Being a HUGE Buckeyes fan, I really like Stroud. Here's the thing I have always said about him though. Are you getting Stroud vs. Michigan or Stroud vs. every other team? His stats are still great against Michigan in his two losses to them, but he was rattled. I was at both of those games and he was visibly more nervous. I don't know if it was how big those games are up here and the magnitude of THAT rivalry, but it was there. Happy feet so to speak.

That being said, I think that's an anomaly with him. I think 99% of the time, you get Stroud vs. Georgia and that should be very exciting to Texans fans. I don't care what he thinks about other players, if he loves his momma or goes to church on Sunday. I care if he can win. Can he carry a team and make players around him better. Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson, Jaxon Smith-Njigba and next year will see Marvin Harrison Jr. added to that WR list Stroud had go in the first round of the draft. Someone was throwing those passes to all those guys right? Or are you one of those people that think he can't survive in the NFL, because he won't have four first round WR's to throw to? Burrow had more 1st round talent around him on that LSU team, that it wasn't funny and came to a 2-14 team. He had his knee imploded his rookie year and then came back to take us to the Super Bowl. The past is the past. The Texans have the next man up at a very important position. Just enjoy the ride regardless of how it turns out.

I'm betting he does well and wish him and the Texans all the luck in the world this year.
We are coming to Houston to catch some games this year and we get to see you all in Cincinnati as well !!

We’ll see you in the AFCCG. :winky:

There are two dissenters. Yes, it looks like a lot of "angst" but it's only two dissenters.
Maybe it was just the amount of posts. I didn't really look at who was saying what.
That's good though and I hope the fans get excited about it. Hope springs eternal right?
Or is it, hope sucks? Anyway, watching a new QB taken that high come in and build is fun.
Unless that QB eats it, then disregard...

Oh another comment that I have seen a lot is that Stroud "can't" run the ball well.
That's crap. He simply wasn't asked to do that. When he needs to, he can make plays with his legs.
Give me the solid pocket passer, capable of making plays with his feet, as opposed to the guy that can run for days, but will need time to develop as a passer. Another Ohio State QB I love, Justin Fields is more that guy. Runs like crazy and has had to develop his pro passing game.

That and he will actually be able to see over the heads of his o-linemen.
:laughjump:

Wonderlic not Wunderlich, hence the German joke.

We have a winner! I couldn't resist. Usually, I'm not one to dig on people for spelling. However, if over the next four year, I have to visit this forum and get bombarded with posts calling a player dumb about their Wonderlic or S2 scores, I don't know if I have the self-control to not mention that post and joke. LMAO!

I just want you to know, leading up to the draft I was the only person here that wanted the Texans to draft Stroud. Texanballer, Lucky, Porky...those guys said the last thing they wanted was the Texans to draft Stroud. They were on the Levis train. Good thing none of those guys are the GM.

You must have me confused with someone else. I did briefly back off of him after the S2 release and the agent controversy, but it didn’t take but a day or two for me to simply go back to where I was after the Georgia game. I had Young as 1A and Stroud as 1B… just a tick or two behind Bryce. I am not a fan of Levis and was opposed to the Texans drafting him.

Nice fluff piece, but not sure I agree with this statement:

"I'm just affirming the narrative that Keenum's best asset is his mental game and how he has been a huge aid to young quarterbacks in his career."

As a vet and having been on several teams, he's an asset to have from an experience perspective. But what young QBs has he mentored? Haskins? Mayfield?
