2023 TEXANS DRAFT DISCUSSION

Yes. A successful running scheme has nothing to do with a dual threat QB. Ex: Foster and Tate……
Nevertheless, a dual threat QB can enhance a successful running game ala Ravens.

Edit: I am going to stop here. I think we are talking about the same thing, only I prefer my QB be able to run vs not run like Schaub. Does he need to be able to run in a West coast? No....but I would prefer he be able to. Only makes the offense more dangerous. Memories of Schaub still gets my ulcers acting up.

Clayton Tune's play fakes reportedly are outstanding.

If Young is not there at #2, I'm coming around to going defense at #2 and #12; and going with Tune in a late, third day round. From what I'm reading, he should fit well in a WCO.
I was thinking the same thing again last night re CT. I don't think he is the ultimate answer but the guy I think is is likely going to Carolina.
So now you use that valuable first five picks on BPA and add quality prospects.

Most definitely, even when he had that chump, our running game was better.

Why not also put him on the line with four other guys?
That's what I was referring to when I said you could use him in different positions. During blitz packages, slide him outside our starting DE's where he can have a virtually uncontested run at the QB or RB in the backfield.

Teams have got to figure out how to run when the QB is not under center.

Pistol, zone read... they gots to figure something out.

Nick Bosa: 6’4” 266 33” arms 10 3/4” hands

Will Anderson: 6’ 3 1/2” 253 33 7/8” arms 9 7/8” hands

Anderson is not exactly comparing Bryce Young to other QBs. And he’s got longer arms than Bosa. I am not concerned with his size holding up as a 4-3 DE. I am confident the coaches will figure out a way to make use of Anderson’s skillset.
No comparison to Tyree Wilson?

How many play actions to make up his deficiencies?
What defiencies do you refer to?

His primary weakness is his arm strength on the deep routes. But he has plenty of strength out to the intermediate range, which fits the wco.

He's accurate with fine touch, can hit receivers in stride, reads the field well and works through his progressions, uses his eyes to manipulate safeties, has a quick release and throws a nice spiral, and can use his legs.

Except for his deep passing issue, his other issues are correctable and in our offense could do very well. I think you may be thinking he would be drafted to start.

Arm strength is not only important in deep routes. They are extremely important in throwing into tight windows in intermediate range passes.........tight windows which become much tighter in the NFL.

The report I read says he does have sufficient arm strength to drive the ball through tight windows out to the intermediate range. Are you suggesting otherwise? I think I do recall reading he does have a hesitancy to throw into tight windows and this sometimes leads to sacks. But this is a head problem and should be correctable.

IF I were to take Bryce Young at #2 (and I would not), my next two picks (assuming no trades were available) would be #12 O'Cyrus Torrence (RG) & #33 John Michael Schmitz (C). Those are the two best IOL in this draft & I wouldn't care that we just traded for Mason. The best RG would start. That would at least give Young a fighting chance to survive the NFL. He'd have to live with the current skill position players we have until the next off season. If the Texans take him, they have to protect him.
Miss me on Torrence. From what I've seen, he can't move on a rail.

Enough to finally get it right. If I had my way, C- Michael-Schmitz (Minnesota) would be my first piece. Later in the draft, I’d select C/G- Ricky Stromberg (Arkansas). Both of these guys have been their OL QB’s at Center. They’re both smart and been a big part of OL’s that had dominant running games.

I’d be fine with this investment in the draft…..and could take a flyer on G- Andrew Vorhees (USC) if he’s still on the board late due to his injury. He’d be my 2024 insurance policy if Green doesn’t pan out in 2023.

Investments start in the trenches…..b/c solid trenches make skill players look a lot better.
So 3 1st rd picks under the age of 27 isn't enough?

No, not if those 3 1st rd picks don’t all pan out. You keep picking them until they do.

How many first round picks were on Gibbs and Benton's lines? We can continue to invest 1st round picks into the line, but it won't matter until we finally get good coaching at that position. Players we've deemed as busts have left here only to start and play really well on other teams. I'll know we have a good coach when we can develop late round draft picks and undrafted FAs into quality starters (Chris Myers, Mike Brisiel) instead of failing with 1st round picks. We need to finally hit on a OL coach.

That puts me all the **** out on him.

Everyone knows I want the guy with the undisputed motor and work ethic. Anyone who even has a question of not having their heart in it is completely out for me. Even if it's smokescreen BS, I don't want anyone who'd even be believable as having that issue.

In fact, if anyone has a list of those guys with that concern please share it so I can know if my "interest" is misguided.

I don't want any of those ******* loafs here. Someone who's "hard to coach" and "some people doubt his drive" and the fact that he's got that agent makes me think that this guy runs at the first sign of trouble and is in the business of blaming others and whatnot. No thanks.

Give me JJs. Give me DeMecos.

Until they ran up against a team that wanted to win.

Schaub was perfect for this team when we got him. For what that team was. But when they started getting into the play-offs, he didn't have it.

What kind of revisionist history bullshit is this?

Schaub didn't even play one of those years due to Albert Haynesworth's fat ******* ass.

And in the other, it wasn't even *close* to his fault that we lost to New England. In fact, Schaub's work ethic and drive when we were down big and didn't lay down was what even brought some semblance of intrigue back into the game---however fleeting. If it wasn't for that drop by whoever the hell it was after the huge Manning return to begin the game, the momentum would have completely been different. Then the next play, "admittedly" was Schaub pissed and sailing it past Andre. Unfortunately the Patriots back then were in the "never give them life otherwise they'll kill you."

If they’re not performing……then no, it isn’t enough.

Some underlying issues could be coaching, might be the system, play calling could be a big factor, or the player just doesn’t have the drive to be the best player they can be at the pro level. So many factors play a roll, so there’s no black-eye if teams have to go back to the well.

Texans OL has been performing very well with the known exception in the center of that line. Coaches performing well anywhere on the offense with the possible exception of the RB coach is a different story.

The “exception of the RB coach” invalidated your point. It was Dameon Pearce. Blaming coaching is the easy way out, looking for the quick fix.

I’ve said for years they need to spend a high pick on the OL every single draft, no exceptions. It minimizes the risks of taking a player that doesn’t pan out, and it assures good depth in case of injury.

How long do you give them to pan out?

At least 2 years, minimum. You most certainly cannot evaluate him properly just after his rookie season.

Good post.

Dude made up some false crap and you people took the freaking bait and ran with it.
Now we’re judging players off of what someone else said versus actual facts.

That’s the freaking world we live in. Smh

That's why I said possible exception. Players have to have talent also. No coaching was going to fix Burkhead but Pierce was allowed to shine.
The RB coach was one of the very few that DeMeco felt good enough about to retain

This is probably the most honest and thorough evaluation of Tune which is mostly consistent with my observations. He has developmental potential, but likewise has significant limitations.

I can understand that but as I said, the very fact that someone could posit this smoke and have it be believable is concerning enough. I don't know the guy so I can't get "the facts" as if there's a way to get "facts" on something like this....but combined with the agent situation and stuff, paints a bleak picture on my end.

It's silly season. But that's why we have brains to discern things.

I've seen it mentioned that the Texans could trade pick 1.2 to the Raiders, so I tried that in this mock. What do y'all think?

I think the PFF algorithm for trades is kinda broken. I've done a couple of similar trade backs and the number of picks you end up with are just ridiculous. I did a tradeback with the Colts where they basically gave me their entire draft (and some picks the next couple of years).

I did a Lions one, too.

I'm having entirely too much fun with these.

I'm having too much fun with these too. I've done like 50 of them with PFF. Those are two good drafts. I wouldn't mind either one of them.
