Nick Caserio - New GM

I said this at the time and my sources whom I trust to 100 degrees stated Dallas offered a 2nd, Carsterio wanted a 2nd and a 4th and Dallas take salary. Dallas shot them the middle finger and left.

The only thing missing, how much contract did the Cowboys want the Texans to eat for that RD2 pick?

My guess, probably 12M+ in 2023 and another 10M+ in 2024. That may have been when Caserio gave Jerrah and his boy the finger.

I just listened to Lance and he said it was a 3rd. The deal breaker was the Texans didn’t want to pay more than half. They also wanted a 5th as well. Dallas said pass

This was also before Cooks through his public hissy fit. Maybe he had a private temper tantrum before trade talks began but he did not publicly throw a hissy fit until after the trade deadline had passed and Easterby was fired.

He tried. Dallas said at that time his asking price was too high. Plus I don’t think Caserio wanted to pay a large amount of that contract.
Caserio not wanting to pay a large amount of that contract was a direct result of Caserio's own failures. The master of dead money restructured and renegotiated Cooks contract to the point he could not get a 2nd or 3rd rd pick. In the process, Caserio created $22,000,000 in dead money and depleted Cooks value to 5th and 6th rd draft picks. Master of Dead Money, Master of the FUBAR and SNAFU.

Thorn doesn't call him Casino for nothing. He likes gambling.

.....you forgot to add the "Master of the Crystal Ball". You know, the one that told him Cooks, like Watson, would quit on the team after stating that he had no desire to play anywhere else but in Houston then signing his extension.

The crystal ball had absolutely nothing to do with Caserio restructuring Cook's contract in 2021 and canceling the last year of the contract. Then restructure Cook's contract again in 2022 and extend his contract by adding another year at premium WR prices. If Caserio knew what he was doing the Texans starting salary cap in 2023 should've been closer to $80MM instead of the current $41MM. After seeing how Taylor and Brown signed for $18MM and $16MM a year respectively, and the franchise tag for an LT is $18MM, you have to wonder how in the hell did Gas Mask Tunsil snooker Casino into giving him OVER $25MM a year. Sorry Demeco, with you or without you the Texans are exactly who we have always known them to be. This is exactly what you should expect from a Belichick secretary. Caserio's pattern of behavior and mode of operation is to throw money and draft picks away.

While I don’t disagree with Texian, I do put it into context. Every GM makes mistakes. Every. Single. One. Ever. Howie Roseman with Philly has been blasted many times but his team was in the SB multiple times despite mistakes.

Texian is comparing Nick to perfection which is an impossible achievement. What we should be looking at is how he compares to his contemporaries. I don’t have enough knowledge to stack him up, but that is the pertinent question.

Very hard to take you seriously when you still insist that locking up a top 5 LT for a rookie QB is a bad investment

What matters most is how Caserio has done compared to what Elliot Wolf would have done had he ever been a GM.

Another GM will make his LT or one he’s acquired the highest paid LT in the game soon enough. Then Tunsil is no longer the market setter…..just another pawn in the game of one-up-manship being played by NFL owners. Don’t blame the players or GM’s for getting what they ask for. In the end, it’s the owners who sign the checks.

Sure looks like we are beefing our offense up to support a rookie QB. Tunsil extension, bringing in Shaq Mason, Robert Woods, Singletary, Schultz, to go with stud Pierce. Legit backup with tons of experience in Keenum that can bring rookie QB along but never be a real threat to him. Looks like we are actually going to try to have a plan for a rookie QB to succeed. I think Ryans and Caserio will pick a defender at #12 to try to put a young cornerstone rookie on the defense. Most likely a pass rusher. Wouldn’t be surprised if they jump a few spots and give up one of their 3rds if the pass rushers start to go in front on them. Rounds 2 and on they start going after BPA to ratchet up the talent and competition on the team.

Agree but there are good pass rushers in round two.

I agree, but in my world….DE- Tyree Wilson is the #2 pick. Best “true” 4-3 DE in the draft, and the Cardinals wet dream if the Texans don’t select him.

I believe pick 12 could be played to a 22-31 round one drop while picking up an additional RD2 and maybe RD3.

My first (7) picks could look like this:

RD1- DE- Tyree Wilson
RD1- WR- Jalin Hyatt

RD2- QB- Hendon Hooker
RD2- LB- Jack Campbell

RD3- OC- Ricky Stromberg
RD3- SS- JL Skinner
RD3- RB- David Archane

When has this franchise ever had a GM that could be described this way?

History matters. It might not repeat itself but it does rhyme.

You’ve been around here since practically day one, right? This forum, every single year, has always had at least 4 or 5 keyboard warriors that insist they are better at being a GM, year after year after year. The names change, but the numbers remain the same.

Yep. Lather, rinse, repeat ∞

It seems (to me) like an exercise in futility to compare any of the Texans GMs to any other GM when the McNairs have never allowed their GM to have unilateral power over personnel and football operations in general.

But, folks got nothing better to do and that's why Texans Talk is here. :user:

Other than probably insisting on a decent QB, I don't think the McNairs have had much input roster wise with NC. I think they trust him.
He has done a pretty good job since he came here. Sure, very few of us agree with everything he has done, but I think he is definitely working hard behind the scenes.
I doubt the naysayers can point to more than 3 or 4 other GMs that have been perfect.
If they do, I am sure some of us could point out a ? mark on a deal or two.

The McNairs were directly responsible for Jack Easterby, who they continued to let meddle until Lovie finally had enough. Then they fired him after one season. lol

I have no idea of the extent of their meddling ways at this point, but based on history, I do not give them the benefit of the doubt any more. They don't deserve it.

We do know that Caserio, like every other previous Texans GM, does not have unilateral power like other NFL GMs. They're still running a boardroom model on Kirby, and the GM is just another seat at that table.

And I would not be shocked if QB by owner decree at 1.2 is reality, regardless if the scouts/GM/HC has another player rated higher *cough*WillAndersonJr.*cough*

You could still take WA, and move up again from #12 to get a top tier QB. How aggressive they want to be will be revealed on draft day and going by what they have done so far, nothing would surprise.
I think Casino got the memo.

Gotta hand it to Tricky Nicky. He started off FA like a backfiring 1947 Jalopy that looked like Jethro's truck in the Beverly Hillbilly's, but he's traded that in for an entry-level used Lexus.

He's not tooling around in a Maserati, but dude is now fashionable in his lightly used 2020 Lexus with Pavarotti belting out the operatic tunes.

If you think about it, he's now hit every single position group on both offense and defense in FA with a player that at worst will strengthen depth in the short-term, and a small handful will be upgraded starters vs. 2022 starters. QB to Secondary, dude has hit his targets like a finally tuned bombing run. My remaining concern is those two little words "short term".

His plan has to start including some 3 and 4 year deals on some of these guys next year. You can't churn the roster this much year after year. Yes, football has more natural churn than other major sports but not this much churn. He's going to end up churning over half the team in one off-season. He's signing roughly 15 FA, 10 Draft picks, and at least 1 or 2 UDFA's make the final 53. That's basically half the team. That's either brilliant or bullship.

It could be worse, we could be the Cowboys with an owner acting as the GM.
But I really doubt the McNair's have ever forced their will on Nick, the one lone exception may be the hiring of Lovie when all the Flores/Racist crap was going down, and I could very well be wrong on that too.

A couple of good days in a row for Nick.
Sounds like Slowik and the staff have been busy.

Has anyone done a wellness check on Texian?
Surely you jest. Akins graded higher than Schultz and Brown's paid him 1/3 of what Texans paid Schultz. Deiter did not play last year and was beat out as a starter in Miami. Singletary is an adequate compliment to Pierce, but he does have short arms, small hands (prone to fumble), and is slow. Singletary excels as a blocker and IMO that is why Slowik signed him. If you liked 2021 you're going to love 2023.

When has an OC negotiated with players and got them to sign contracts? That is some serious ladder jumping to jump ahead of the HC and GM of a team and have the owner agree to a player contract.

Brain fog is a little thick today, huh?

If Slowik and his offensive staff decide on the players they want for the offense, then it is up to Demeco and Nick. DeMeco gave Caserio the green light to make it happen in that order.

LOL. The bullship wasn't a typo. I say that sometimes in mixed company or if I'm trying to beat the censors lol.

You can get past the "censors". Although it's probably not a good idea to do it to often here. I've had a few posts "edited". LOL

I think Doc @CloakNNNdagger and a few others on the board know some people with the Texans. Why don't you print out some of your posts, put them in a binder, give them to one of them, and have them submit you for the GM job?
