Who should Caserio target as the next HC?

I like in no particular order;

Steichen and Gannon, both coordinators with the Eagles
Jerrod Mayo
Ryans
Kafka

Probably lean towards Mayo or Kafka.
For me in no order

Demeco Ryans DC 49ers
Kellen Moore OC Cowboys
Mike Kafka OC Giants
Byron Leftwich OC Bucs

Two guys who interest me but not sure they are ready
Shane Steichen OC Eagles
Shane Waldron OC Seahawks

I forgot about Greg Roman. Add him to the list above.

A guy whom I'm keeping an eye on is Vikings OC Wes Phillips. Phillips has been under Sean McVay, Jay Gruden, and Jason Garrett. Coached QBs, O-Line, and TEs. Wes is young (43), but not too young. I love the bloodline, as well.

Here's a quote from Vikings HC Kevin O'Connell on Phillips coaching ability.

"A really, really good mind from a standpoint of how we want to throw the football and marry it with the running game on early downs," O'Connell said. "But more importantly how to go score. He's been a huge part of building every offensive red zone plan I've had working alongside him over the past few years both in Los Angeles and in Washington.
"I've seen him develop and take good players and make them great and take young players and turn them into really high-quality, starting-caliber players when not a lot of people in the building may have thought that was possible. What does that tell me? He can develop. He can teach. He can lead. He can obviously motivate," O'Connell continued.

I believe it was Brian Daboll. Both were in KC in 2012, and Daboll left to join the Pats in 2013. Daboll recommended Easterby to Belichick, as the Pats were going thru the Aaron Hernandez thing.
In 2012 the Chiefs had just gone thru the Jovan Belcher murder-suicide at Arrowhead Stadium and Easterly was the team Chaplain. Would make sense for Daboll to recommend Easterly to Pats after Hernandez was arrested in 2013 for murder. The timeline fits perfectly.

Love this idea! Former QB. And tons of experience SUCCESSFULLY coaching TEs.

Texans marketing department would love having grandson of Bum in the building. And possibly coax Wade into making appearances to get the fans excited about Houston football.

To top it all off he comes from the coaching tree that has been quite successful in today’s NFL. I would not be concerned with the Texans developing their franchise QB with this guy.

A prime OC candidate for his staff would be Jay Gruden I suspect. Or some other Mcvay connection.

I didn't even know that son of Bum of son of Bum was an OC. I knew he was coaching somewhere, but thought he was a position coach. Shows what I know! I don't know much about his resume and overall qualifications, but gotta love the bloodlines, the connection to the city, etc. And I generally like the coaching tree as well. Certainly worth keeping an eye on this under-the-radar guy. He'll have instant credibility with the fanbase and city even though 95% of us probably have little intel on him. But he'd be a popular pick just due to his family tree.

As a TE coach, he got the best years out of talented but injury prone Jordan Reed in Washington. Along with Vernon Davis.

And with the Rams, he helped Tyler Higbee take his next step in production. Along with Gerald Everett.

The Vikings added TJ Hockenson at the deadline and he has been productive for them while Phillips has been OC.

He has had a solid track record at the position.

And as passing game coordinator for the Rams last season he helped elevate Cooper Kupp’s play to record setting territory. Leading the NFL in the receiving triple crown.

Fast forward to this season with the Vikings and it appears Justin Jefferson might just do the same thing.
What's really weird is it's Bum Phillips' bloodline. Can you imagine Bum having a pass happy offense?

This really seems like there is some truth to the story of Caserio recommending Gannon but Cal wanting to keep Lovie as DC.

Gannon said no and Cal said let’s just make Lovie the HC. Caserio played the long game and said let’s see how long this plays out.

Now Caserio has Gannon back on the menu.

TK will never believe this post, even if Gannon becomes the next HC.

But Gannon can't be approached until Philly exits the playoffs? Correct? What if the Texans lose out to another teams offer? Will the Texans second, or third, choices still be available?

Remember all the talk before Gannon that Nick wanted control of the coaching staff. Don't forget we debated that very topic here.

That Nick wanted control of the coaching staff

Don't forget we talked about Nick wanting control of the coaching staff led to hiring Culley with Lovie Smith waiting to be his DC

Nick wanted control of the coaching staff, don't forget that. That's the only way to make sense of Josh McCown to get three interviews, more than Gannon

Remember Pep was here last year. The thinking was that Nick hired him to supplant Kelly when the time comes. Nick retained the OC, Tim Kelly, before Culley was selected as HC.

Caserio wanting control of the coaching staff ordered the HC to fire the OC & presumably promote Pep.

Pep is our OC because Nick wants control of the coaching staff

It's ridiculous to now say Cal wanted say over who the DC is going to be.

I’m thinking they immediately interview Demeco and the Lions OC.

Read the article, there's nothing substantial in it.

Lovie hasn't been fired it would be irresponsible for the Texans to express interest in anything right now

The Eagles are getting ready for the playoffs, it would be irresponsible for Gannon to express any interest in anything right now

Click bait speculation. Read the article & provide evidence to show me I'm wrong.

If they get a bye week going into the playoffs then he can be interviewed with permission from the Eagles. That is my understanding.

That’s not how I remember it. From the time Lovie was hired it was believed that Cal wanted Lovie on the staff.

McCown was wanted by Easterby. Janice/Cal wanted him too.

That’s why Caserio was trying to bring in Gannon and have a say over staff. Cal wanting Lovie and Easterby wanting McCown. That’s why Gannon withdrew.

You said multiple times that Caserio wanted control of the coaching staff but you fail to point out the reason he wanted control: McNairs.

And to go back to Culley: Caserio was trying to appease Watson. That’s why Culley and TK had a job. Culley was always a gap coach. Until he realized he had a way out and still get paid.

Point is Nick Caserio wanted control of the coaching staff way before Gannon was an issue.

This was talked about before Culley was hired

That's why I'm saying it's funny to all of a sudden put it on Cal.

To start the 2022 coaching search we were being told candidates were asked about keeping Lovie, or keeping Pep... way before Gannon was the last guy left

I remember bringing up Tomlin & the Steelers & being told we're not the Steelers & Lovie is not Lebeau

You still are missing the point why Caserio wanted control of the coaching staff:

McNairs.

It isn’t all of sudden. It has been said since the time Lovie was hired.

No. That's not the way the McNairs have ever done it.

That's the Patriots way

Tell Kubiak that when Wade Phillips was brought in.
BIG difference. Bum showed up at practice and convinced Bob McNair to hire Wade. If Bum doesn't show up Wade probably doesn't get hired. It was clear that Kubiak's 5 years of the buddy plan was a complete failure. Speaking of Bum and Wade, hire Wes Phillips. At this point, it might be the only thing I can get excited about.

Thanks for adding details to the my point. I can always count on you for a good story.

End of the day - McNair stepped in and hired Wade and not Gary.

Owner hiring coach. Not coach hiring coach.

Which is exactly what I am saying Texan’s owners have done and @thunderkyss says the Texan’s owners don’t do.

After the Flores lawsuit, Lovie was Cal's guy. I understand this, Lovie is a lovable kinda guy.

I would definitely be targeting an offensive minded coach. If somehow a miracle happens and this franchise can finally find a QB who can throw the ball AND keep his towel over his junk, then the last thing we want is to be rebuilding the offensive gameplan every couple of years as we lose OCs to HC opportunities.

The only way I’d hire a defensive coach as HC is if I thought that coach was pretty damn special and was head and shoulders above the other candidates.

How much is Kafka and how much is Daboll?
Dont know,

However Kalfa is from the Reid tree and he's really helped Danny Dimes become a better player. If a QB has to be the pick at 1-2 then my HC wiosh list looks like this. But you really cant go wrong with anybody on this list. A refreshing change from the last couple of yrs lists.

1. Payton (Probably wont happen)
2. Kalfka
3. Gannon if Reich is the OC.
4. Stiechen
5. Johnson
