2023 Draft Random thoughts thread.

Texansphan

Football connoisseur
Just a landing spot for anything draft related.
I am pretty excited with the Edge class this go round with plenty of excellent prospects so Texans have an excellent chance to upgrade their edge and pass rush with two high quality guys. Yes two.
Here is a list of names to study:-
Will Anderson
Myles Murphy
Tyree Wilson
Isaiah Foskey
Andre Carter
Nolan Smith
Zach Harrison
BJ Okulari
Jared Verse
There are several others in that top group but these are likely standouts with the bottom few probably still on the board around the 50 range.
One name I am very high on is Laiatu Latu and Drafttek has him listed at #149 but I would be shocked if he falls out of the 3rd round - I think we have a pick around #84 and if he is there, I run to the podium.
This is a decent WR class as well with talent generously sprinkled through all 7 rounds.
Add your thoughts.

What's the difference between edge and pass rush guys?
IMHO, pass rushers can be rush specialists while edge can be edge set specialists.
Yes Edge should be able to do both well a la JJ, but those that can do both equally at a high level are less common.
Raises the question of the difference between edge and OLB.

An Edge rusher is as described. He plays/rushes from the outside. Be it a 3 point stance or stand up position. There are designated pass rushers that come in to rush from the interior. Usually to replace the big run stuffing DTs.

As you said, edge rushers are deep in this class. Center is also a position depth. I think there will be CBs available into the 3rd day.

I'm not as high on the WR class as you. The OT depth is particularly weak. LBs are thin. As far as I'm concerned, it's a 2 QB class for starters.

Okay, but I think all the guys you mentioned are listed as edge rushers on the draft databases

Yes, but none of the guys he listed are IDL, they are all edge guys

It is also one of the deepest drafts in decades for RBs. One pundit said some outside the top ten in this draft would have been top five in last year's.

I'm thinking anything under 250 should be OLB?
The point I was trying to make was that you listed all edge guys and no pass rush specialists. So there was no difference in your original post. Edge are either 3-4 OLB or 4-3 DE, but not all of either

So you think Anderson is an OLB?

I'm thinking Caserio sits at 32 and picks an edge. Thoughts on Zach Harrison? Uber athletic and really improved this year.
WA plays edge very well. I guess I am a traditionalist - DEs should be over 250, around 275 is proto typical but then again, Watt was 295, but he was an outlier and played all over the DL.
Harrison is freaky fast for such a big dude and has the wing span of a freaking albatross - I can see him knocking a lot of passes down.
Decent on pass pro with a nice rush too.
Would make a great addition to any team.
Two other guys I like outside of the first are Tui Tuipulotu and Jared Verse.
TT plays all over the line like a baby Watt. Versatility is a valued asset in today's league.
Verse may go in the first.
This is an exciting DL draft and Texans need to take advantage of it and grab a couple.
And RBs. Jamyhr Gibbs has been compared to Alvin Kamara and Blake Corum has been compared to MJD. I hope we get one of those two.
With so much talent in this draft, a trade is a smart way to go but only if you can get more picks in this draft - especially so for a team in rebuild.
While the QB class doesn't excite, you can really stock up on some other strong positions.

You missed DE- Tyree Wilson (Texas Tech) and RB- Zach Charbonnet (UCLA) as very solid pieces.

That's his position with Alabama. His playing weight is listed as 243. He's too light for DE.
So? Do you think this franchise is married to Lovie's defense? Anderson or any other 1st round pick will outlast this coaching staff. This staff may not be around by the draft.

If a defense cannot incorporate a talent like Will Anderson, that defense is worthless. Ya know, like the Texans defense is.
