You're on the clock as Texans GM

As Texans GM/HC what do you do with 1.1 in 2023

  • Draft QB Bryce Young with intent of sitting him and trading him 2024 for multiple future draft pick?

I want a full offense draft because the Texans have to be able to put up over 20 pts per game and I don't think Young's the guy that can do that on a consistent basis.

So draft everybody that needs to be drafted to give Young his best chance to succeed. No excuses.
Have you seen the Texans offense? It's offensive!

I worded the statement the way I did for a reason.

We’d invest a RD1-01 for a QB some of us aren’t sold on, then go out and make this an offensive focused draft so the new QB has his best opportunity at success.

Why not make the same investment for Mills and let’s see how this works for him. We could very well find out that Mills had the talent all along…..all he needed was the on-field reps and more talent around him.

I have to disagree. A pass rusher has gone #1 overall 5 times since 2000. No team has ever traded up to take them. QBs have gone #1 overall 16 times in that time span. With only 2 trades to move up for them. Deals for 1.1 rarely happen.
Good info and insight.

I selected other. As I am reading the draft pre-XMAS, I am pretty pessimistic about it the long-term benefits to squad and that has nothing to do with Carstereo, Lovie or GameBoy.

As Lucky posted, the 1st overall pick has been traded twice since the Texans have existed, both times QBs Goff and Vick.

Of the 5 pass rushers drafted 1st overall, none of the teams have developed a SuperBowl level roster even when the player has lived up to the hype. Remember the Texans have tried this twice.

-----------------------------------------------------

The most successful number overall picks have been when there is a clear above average starting QB. That is very questionable in this draft.

In short, low percentage chance of a trade down, the best player does not have a history of developing a quality roster, and the best QBs have legitimate questions.

Looks like I'll be rethinking things.

Of course you still have to bait the hook, but maybe have to scale way back on asking price. Like maybe just a single second rounder. But if no takers, I guess I'd go with Young.

I'd be concerned about Geno Smith turning back into Geno Smith.
Oh me too and in huge way.. is he contract extension playing as some players have done? Is it just fortuitous? Is he just having a crazy good year? Risky but isn't each player we've discussed? I like everything about him except the $ to get him but that is easily doable and I wasn't anticipating spending much in FA so why not. Young or Stroud or a maybe Caleb two drafts away? Pulling a QB from Seattle and perhaps forcing them to trade a significant package to us would be sweet and good for Texans image; plus showing Smith that plan surrounding him with young good talent and an opportunity to go deep in playoffs could cancel the allure of extending with Seahawks.

Everything I project is on understanding we have new coaching if not GM soon. Today all three sports stations saying Lovie/Pep will be terminated.

If Lions make the playoffs....I could see them holding on to Goff and filling other areas of their roster.
I can see it also but rare is the mock or comment that has Lions not going after another QB. I have seen that he remains his last two contract years but Lions still draft a QB which could be ideal for team. As I said when comparing him to Carr, his stats don't take the Lions anywhere-- my issue with Dak also. Seattle most likely extends Geno and uses draft to improve other areas. One mock I think I linked had Seattle trading up to get Anderson.

Trade back and get the suburban load of picks then get QB Caleb Williams from USC in the 24 draft. He has the makings of a secure investment. My thoughts on the first round would have us moving up if necessary to get RB Bijan Robinson which would give us the best backfield in the nfl and Robinson is a very good receiver much like McCaffrey

If Young's the missing link, then draft him RD1-01. The only caveat to that, I'd use the remaining picks on defense. Young should be able to elevate the offense with his talent.
You select a QB then ignore OC, RG, chance that Cooks will be gone or throwing a tantrum, no side kick to help Pearce?

Those three would be nice but I don't think there is anyone worthy of moving up to the #1 spot for.
Would you have traded what we received for DW to get him? It is what the other NFL GMs would do and we constantly see trades being done or at least offered that we would not have done. The Hershel Walker trade that everyone points to stunned the NFL world but it did happen. It is obvious by just reading or listening to all outside of this MB that most have Young and Stroud going high and most at 1. I am not a Jalen Carter fan nor would I draft him but I'd be silly to think an NFL team would not trade up to get him. Same with Anderson.

It appears many of the teams between 1/2 and 1/6 may not have a dire need to draft qb. The Panthers are the one team that almost assuredly will draft qb, unless they sign a fa. This increases the likelihood that teams may be looking at Anderson. Whether the Texans go offense or defense with our first pick, the opportunity for a trade, or multiple trades, may be increased. And if the Texans are eying Young, we could trade down a few spots and worry less about Carolina leapfrogging the Texans. If the draft goes defense at the top of the round, Carolina could just sit pat and let a qb fall to them.

We still have four weeks for the draft order to finalize, but it looks encouraging for an opportunity for the Texans to wheel and deal with the 1/1 selection.
:specnatz::splits: YES SIR!!!

How many of those 16 were teams selecting QB that didn't need one?

2022 there was no QB to trade up for and pass rushers were Walker, Hutchinson and Thibodeaux. Even my guy Jermaine Johnson went late round 1 so why would anyone trade up?

2021 QBs Zac Wilson, Trevor L and Trey Lance with Justin Fields and Mac Jones later in round; four of last five selections were edge rushers so again why trade up?

2020 Burrough, Tag and Herbert with Jordan Love going to GBay late so...

2023 IMO Anderson would be the pass rusher to trade up for although I'd go with others much later but Young and Stroud are considered franchise guys by most outside this microcosm we daily enter.

you guaranteeing Caleb will be where we draft?

How many of those 16 were teams selecting QB that didn't need one?
Do you mean how many teams that had the number 1 pick and traded down didn't think they needed a QB?

One. Tennessee had drafted Marcus Mariotta in the 2015 draft, and traded the #1 pick in 2016 to the Rams, who selected Jared Goff.

Thing is, teams may gamble Texans will take a QB at #1 so why would they need to trade up for Carter or Anderson with us? They may trade for the #2 overall.

First, it's going to depend on which teams are slotted where. Second, it's all about creating uncertainty.

Right now, Seattle has moved into 1/2.

Seattle has had Russell Wilson as their QB for most of the past decade; won one SB and lost another with Wilson. Young would be a perfect fit.

If Houston were to make it known they were shopping #1, Seattle wouldn't know who would trade or who was the target. And, let's say Detroit, would be in the same situation. They wouldn't know who might trade or whether Young or Anderson was the target.

Three, it depends on how desperate a team is to get their man.

I can understand your thought process there, but what you actually said was that if the Texans thought they could and did draft Young then they needed to draft all defense.

Houston has to be able to create doubt about which way they will go. I'd love to see them trade down a time or two and load up on picks

Do you ever see teams doing that? Drafting a player in 2023 to trade in 2024 reduces the value of the drafted player. Instead of trading a 5 year contract, you're trading a 4 year deal. Not to mention the signing bonus and guaranteed $$$ you've already given the #1 overall pick that creates dead money and a cap hit when traded. Reduced cap space and there won't be 3000 draft value points a year later. Either take the player to play him or trade the pick before it is selected.
Jimmy Johnson used a 1st rd pick to draft Steve Walsh because he knew he could trade him for more the next year. And he did, he got 1st, 2nd and 3rd for Walsh.

So in lieu of trading the top pick you go with Bryce Young ? You are that sold on Young, huh ?
BTW you know that icon picture of the guy in the upper right hand corner of this panel - I'm worried about him because based on his expression he needs an enema in the worse kinda way: please help him out please.
I said my first choice is to trade 1.1 and if you’re unable to do that at fair value, then you could draft Young. Working on the avatar, in due time.

No.. 16 teams drafted QB #1 and I'm guessing they needed one so there wouldn't be a trade down.

no but in 24 we would have the picks to trade up for a sure thing
You sure?

Saints1.1 take Caleb.

Panthers picking #2 knowing they screwed up by not trading up with Texans in 2023 take next best QB.

Detroit realize again that Goff isn’t the guy as despite two picks in 2023 has #3 pick and takes best QB left.

Texans with pick 4 offers their own round1, Browns 1st and Texans round but no one will take the massive deal...

I'm going to be honest here. I don't understand what you're saying.
I suggested signing Geno Smith by offering $35m avg plus showing him we will use our current picks plus what we get from trade with his former team Seattle who desperately need QB to build around him. Perhaps bringing his OC as our head coach?

Never happens if we keep Mills, Lovie, Pep and Burkhead. Those are the keys to our success at failure. We are #1 in that scenario.

I think Saints will draft Hooker. Detroit, Seattle and Carolina take Stroud, Young or Levi in some order.

The Colts, ATL and WFT are the dark horse for 2023.

Bears need inside pressure not Anderson and should not trade from 2 as locked into Jalen Carter. If we sign Geno Smith no one will think we take QB at 1.

Seattle at 3 going to hope Lions or Panthers don't jump them to take Young? Stroud is already seeing luster fade and
If Ohio State loses again it could be gone or he could return school to get another crack at Georgia.

My thought is unless by some oddity Ohio State beats Georgia, Young is going to be the guy causing drools with others more than a step behind.

Seattle Will be under even more pressure to recover. If they extend Geno that part of my plan goes out door. So far the teams are lining up in draft order that I wanted.

Or.. Houston could be persuaded not to draft Young if offer is right. Perhaps word is out in April that H'town wants shot at top pick in 24 and will pass in 23.

Things have to be set up just right plus you have to have a GM that Caserio may not be.

Well yeah but Mills of those four only one I expect to be on roster. If you see 1.1 in 2024 with Lovie/Pep don't you think Cal does? He has someone listening to the voices of the fans or momma does.

Seattle doesn’t extend Smith? There is zero chance that Detroit goes again with Goff?

I think meals will be the only one on Payroll next year of those 4. If you see Houston at 1.1 in 2024 don't you think Cal does? He or his mother has an ear out to the community no matter what people say here about them.

You might have something with Hooker to New Orleans and no pun intended but saints desperately cornerback.

So .. no way Seattle extends Geno? And Lions stick with Goff?

I have Carolina coming out of this with either Young or Levis one way or another and hopefully Texans will be a part of it.

Evaluators aren't looking at CJ Stroud losing games and determining his draft status off that. They already have their evaluation of him from his body of work. I mean did we not see Peyton Manning lose every big game college? A college winner isn't as important as the overall tools and talent of the qb prospect.

That's what I have been saying. Throw in an even more desperate Carolina who might be willing to make a Cleveland offer for 1.1. Many thought their owner wanted Watson just didn't want to guarantee the contract.

The problem you have with a partial cleaning is this, a quality oc doesn't want to come here with the coach and gm on the brink of being fired. If Texans fire Pep and keep Lovie, that oc know Lovie and maybe the gm is next. That's even true with firing Lovie and keeping Caserio. The new head coach would know Caserio is on thin ice and if he's fired, the new gm is going to want his own guy. The best thing to do in my opinion is keep all 3 or fire all 3. Hire a gm and let him bring his staff and make the picks. That way, you take the uncertainty out of it.

You are not reading the same I am. Also I do not see Stroud having the same spiff as Manning coming out of school plus the Archie Manning thing.

That was 30 yrs ago, it's not the same
How do you know? There is still a sucker born every minute. Desperate people do desperate things. If you end up drafting Caleb Williams what do you care? Worst case scenario you end up with Young. 30 years ago Johnson created his NFL trade value chart and they are still using it today.

Yeah, that was a horrible deal for Dallas. Jimmy took Walsh in the supplemental draft. Could have had the #1 pick the following year and either traded the pick for more, or taken Cortez Kennedy or Junior Seau.

1990. No rookie limitations on contracts. No salary cap. Not the NFL world that exists today. Again, no one does a deal like that because of the reasons I mentioned. If you can't deal 1.1 this year for a bundle of picks, you won't be able to do it the following year with one year less on the contract. Common sense.

Horrible deal? Woulda, coulda, shoulda. They coulda of drafted Jeff George too. They did draft, HOF Emmitt Smith, in that draft. Johnson used the 3rd RD pick to draft Erik Williams in 1991, who played for the Cowboys for 10 years, has 3 Super Bowl rings, 3X All-Pro, and 4X Pro Bowl. If not for injuries suffered in a 94' car crash he would probably be in the HOF. He packaged the 1st and 2nd RD picks to move up to the #1 pick in 1991 (so Johnson still had a 2nd #1 pick in the draft) to pick Russell Maryland, 3 Super Bowl rings and, a pro bowl. So Johnson used the Walsh trade to add an all-pro Offensive and Defensive lineman with 6 Super Bowl rings between them. Not too shabby.

The thing is, regardless of how you try to spin it, you could still do the same trades today and rookie contracts and salary caps would have absolutely no effect on the trades whatsoever. Neither would prevent a similar trade from happening today. Common sense today is if someone desperately needs a QB, odds are they would be more than willing to trade more than 3000 NFL trade value points for a QB.

Seriously, we just watched a desperate owner give up (3) 1st RD picks, (1) 3rd RD pick, and (2) 4th RD picks PLUS the owner fully GTD the 5-year $230 Million contract. I think you can throw common sense out the window. There were two other teams who were willing to trade similar value w/o the GTD contract. I think there is something to be learned from this, a lot more than saying it can't happen because it just did. I think your definition of common sense has been redefined.

You really think with the talent on the Saints, they will be picking 1-1?

The Lions aren't going to be picking in the top 5 this yr, so I doubt they will be picking in the top 5 in 2024 after having two 1sts in the 2023 draft.

The Panthers are getting some decent QB play from Darnold. They're 2 games out of the division lead and play Tampa one more yr this yr.

Is Caserio on thin ice, or is that just the narrative around these parts?

Seems like a lot of hoping around here, from Lovie and staff getting fired. To Caserio getting fired. To drafting an overrated QB that has proven he makes questionable decisions both on and off the field. To drafting a midget.

Some posters (Not directed at you) SMH.

Then one did...

If this is how the Texans would help ensure Young’s success…..why not do this for Mills first.

Mills success has been predicated on making the current offense successful this year and last, but this offense wouldn’t be good enough for the next QB the team invests in, b/c it would hamper his chances of being successful. See what I’m saying?

Again, the good Mills -when seen- has shown the ability to be pretty impressive, even with his limited reps on the field of play since HS. I’ve seen enough good to have no fear in beefing up the offense around him so his good plays become more consistent……this is what a complete rebuild goes through…..growth.
