My biggest problem with Lovie's defense is that he knows Kirksey is not the 2nd coming of Urlacher.

He needs to drop early... forget about the run. Especially when the opponent comes out exploiting the deep middle. Especially on 3rd & long.

Fix the run defense by fixing the tackling problem & gap integrity. 12 weeks & those are still the main problems on defense.

The game has passed him by, and he has absolutely NOTHING to offer as a HC! Cal needs to sit his ass down and let the grown ups run the organization because the board room style of running the organization has been an absolutely failure!

Fire Pep as well…
As much as I detest the systems both Lovie and Pep's have implemented, it makes no sense to fire them right now. #1 overall is basically secured, but you never know what some interim coach might achieve. You want to wait until the end of the season to look for a long term solution to conduct a thorough evaluation. Would Lovie and Pep's dead money count against the cap or is that just for the players?

I'm not against firing both Lovie and Pep. My only concern is "then What"?
Elevate the assistants until the season is over, perhaps? I don’t know. I’m sure Cal is scared sh*t less at the thought of losing not only the locker room, but also the fan base. I wish the McNairs would just sell the team to Jeff Bezos. That guy would not only hire the right people, but would also stay out of their way.

we went from Kubiak to O’Brien to Culley to Lovie

Acknowledging this trend, do we really want to move on?
Facts, moving on usually ends up with the Texans making an even worse move than the last. Kubiak still stands as the best HC the Texans have ever had. I thought we didn’t have anywhere to go but up after he was let go. Boy was I embarrassingly wrong…

Other than an interim basis, I'm not in favor of elevating coaches from within the Texans organization. It seems to be a culture of losing. However, there is 1 coach on the current staff I might consider as future head coaching material - special teams coordinator Frank Ross. I don't think he is ready just yet, but he could be a serious candidate in a couple of years. Remember, John Harbaugh was never more than a special teams coordinator before becoming HC of the Ravens.

Not long ago someone was waxing poetically about Saleh, McDaniels, Shanahan, & McConnel. They were here in our other culture of losing.

Somehow we’re going to have to establish continuity. The culture won’t change if we keep changing

Well, they should have just kept Culley honestly, not sure if they expected to compete or have significant improvement this year. But there are too many holes on this team in a second year of a rebuild.

The players have quit on them let it ride out and finish the tank. You can start fresh with a new coach next year, but I still wouldn't be shocked if they brought Lovie back just because Cal is losing fans every minute and paying 3 coaches next year might not be an option.

You get rid of everybody, Lovie, Pep and Caserio. With 4 1st RD picks in the next 2 years you can attract a high profile successful winning coach. You meet all his demands, give him an ironclad contract and then get the hell out of his way.
Fk a coach, you can attract a quality GM candidate like Elliot Wolfe, tell the McNairs what to think & build a real football team.

Culley/Lovie don't really matter. It's the same thing. Lovie's defense is exactly as it would have been had Culley stayed.

Pep would have been promoted. Supposedly Culley was fired because he didn't want to be the one to fire Kelly, but Kelly was getting fired regardless.

Give the Saints whatever compensation necessary to get Sean Payton.
If he wants it, make him GM and HC.
If he doesn't want to GM, Cal should let him pick his GM.

Letting the HC pick the GM is probably not a great idea. But it's a vastly better idea that Cal picking the GM. Plus I'm just plain sick of this bullshit.

Cal should then proceed to fade into the background with the exception of the occasional bbq for the fans where he can play the nice guy

I don't know. I think you've got to get the loser mentality out of the building as fast as you can. What do you do in the interim? That I don't have an answer for. I just know Lovie was waving the white flag in the very 1st game of the season when he decided to play for the tie and not even try to win.

People talk about the optics of firing a HC 3 years in a row, or firing 2 black HCs after 1 year each, but shit man, what the hell does it matter what people think when you're 1-9-1?

They can't hit the damn reset button on this rebuild until they get the damn coaching figured out. What a clusterfuck of an organization.

If there is any chance in the world that we could get Sean Payton to take over the Texans in 2023, please let us offer him the sun and the moon and the stars tomorrow morning at 8 am and give him a couple of months to put together a staff, and if he wants GM and Head Coach, fine with me. Or if he wants to pick a new GM that's OK, too.

I mean, that could turn this team on a dime for next year.

Replacements for Lovie Smith? Jim Harbaugh, Rich Bisaccia (Raiders interim HC last year. I thought he did a great job.), Demeco Ryans (Mike Vrabel 2.0), Eagles OC Shane Steichen, Dallas OC Kellen Moore, Cowboys DC Dan Quinn, Denver DC Ejiro Evero, Lions DC Aaron Glenn, Bucs OC Byron Leftwich.
Let the current staff finish the season and secure the #1 overall pick, then clean out the coaching staff and let Caserio lead the search for the new HC. I would try to keep Frank Ross around.

Why get rid of Caserio? He's done a good job in the draft, with the exception of Stingley Jr. (looking at you, Lovie Smith). I'd rather have ownership stay out of the football operations and let Caserio do his thing.

Give the sAints the draft compensation that would be the only incentive for Payton to come here? That's the perfect way to sabotage Payton's ability to build a talented roster.
Payton has been very clear on what kind of team he wants to be the HC for.

If you have read any of my posts then you would know how adamant I've been about how Nick Caserio as GM is completely clueless and has no idea what he is doing. If you need more info you can read the Nick Caserio thread. Every Nick Caserio FUBAR and SNAFU has been spelled out there.

100% correct. Casserio is part of the problem and isn’t even a real GM. He is a highly paid errand boy and has screwed up various items, to include contract mgmt, poor drafting, completely botched coaching searches et al. He gets some credit for the Watson trade, but even then, there was some chaos and some poor decisions. He gets a d+ from me. It’s not good enough, and we need the Easterby stink off this team completely and a totally new start from the top down.

Great list

I would add Kalka/Gannon and LaFluer to this list

1. Is a GM supposed to work together to draft/acquire players that fit the HC's scheme? You must've enjoyed the dysfunction of the RS/BOB yrs, or not learned from them. Same as some (Not you) not learning from drafting a QB with so little talent around the rookie QB.

2. Contract mgmt- do the Texans currently have top 5-7 (I haven't looked it up) amount of cap space in the NFL, not that this offseason top tier FA's will want to sign with the Texans anyways.

3. Do you really believe Caserio wanted to hire Culley/Lovie? He wanted to hire Gannon before Cal shot that down. Just another case of inept ownership.

4. The fact that Caserio made the 2nd best trade in NFL history for trading a single player speaks volumes.

5. You think giving a new GM 1 and 1/2 drafts to fix a talent deficient team is giving any GM enough time to build his team?

Calm down people. You have seen three years of suck. You can handle another year.

I want us to have 1.1 in 2024 to have a shot at Caleb Williams.

Keep everything the same.

You will thank me later.
I feel this year's 2023 QB class was overhyped to a great degree. Not sure what 2024 will bring, but Williams does look pretty damn electric. However, it will be difficult not to grab some QB this year. Just not sure it we should reach @ #1
