In my opinion, last year was the perfect opportunity to begin rebuilding the offensive line. There was more and better talented OL prospects than I've seen in a long time. To ignore that fact was a concern for me. I guess that was Casserio's decision.

I think Caserio's opinion would be he did address it with Green and Deculus but other positions needed help also with DBs getting players plus WR.

Green, Cann, Deculus

Moving Howard to his “natural” position

They had Morrisey, who looked like he was being groomed to take over for Britt. But Q came in & I think played much better (than Britt even). Q may turn into a 10 year starter.

True .... but we've been cussing and discussing the pros and cons, of drafting a possible franchise QB. How often are we bad enough to be drafting this early and how often do we have 2 first round picks - in two successive years ? My point is, nothing is guaranteed, I'm sure the odds are against it .... but when will that opportunity present itself again, if ever ? How can you not grab for the ring ? If it doesn't work, we're just a couple of wins worse.... if it does .... Legendary !

They have 23 & 24... It's not a must draft a QB first pick in 23

I agree with most of your post however it seem like the post I originally quoted was saying you wanted more than just left guard addressed with Green. Without knowing who you would have picked for your offensive line Improvement I can only say that I think Caserio made the Right Moves. My thought at draft and now that corner was priority to be filled.

That's a solid thought .... but a CB can't block ! Think back of any super-high scoring game you've ever seen .... I'll guarantee the offensive line was dominating !

Completely agree. If

& I believe we’ve all said as much. The argument now is one guy is saying Stroud is that guy & the Texans should get him. Everyone else is saying let the season play out. Well, one guy is saying all Ohio State QBs are trash. But other than that…

& yeah, it would be nice to manage the cap & draft as well as the Jaguars. But if we don’t, we could draft Tom Brady in his prime & the Jags would still run away from us.

That’s all I’m saying
It's amazing to me that suddenly the Jaguars are the team we want to emulate. They lost more games than the Texans last year and had a disastrous new HC. But, hey, looks like they have a quarterback, so I guess that does help.

The irony of the Jags situation is that we could have a similar salary cap situation where we are flushed with cash and can spend freely. The Jags created controversy by overpaying some of their free agent receivers. Hopefully we don’t do the same.

But just like some of us are saying - there was 2 years that a filler QB played while the Jags bolstered other sides of the ball. Who was that QB? - Gardner Minshew.

And Miami had two years of Fitzpatrick, Chiefs had Alex Smith…other examples as well.
I would overpay to have Christian Kirk in the slot right now.

Only issue with that is that slot WR is the only WR that Caserio has a history of drafting well. To go after one in FA seems a waste when it’s the outside guys who he struggles to identify through the draft.

My thought at this point is that the first 3 games of the season have turned out to be an incredible soft schedule.

Wasn’t expecting whatever the Colts were going through to start the season but losing a close one to Texans and then whitewashed by the Jags, was an easy game.

Denver beat the 49ers by just 1 point, any decent team should have beaten them easily.

The Bears game another easy game against a poor team.

And yet here we are, winless, after facing 3 teams, 2 of which much worse than advertised and the other as devoid of talent as ourselves.

I’m really pleased that our key rookies are all off to a promising start, that’s been a bonus.

The regression of some of last years players has been hard to watch. I’m hoping that the change in scheme is taking Mills some time to adapt to but it isn’t looking good. What’s happened to Roy Lopez? KGH and Kirksey were never ideal starters but they seem to have fallen back. Nico and Cooks not being used as well as I’d like.

The way the QB reads his progressions has changed significantly from Tim Kelly to Pep, fingers crossed its just taking a while for Mills to adapt. As bad as he’s looked at times, Mills being good is still the quickest way to this team being good.

Great teams who have been built out first have won with average QBs…..
Have you noticed who have won superbowls aside from Brady in the last 15 years?
Totally disagree with you.

You don't realize how bad they were

If you can run a business , which obviously you can and had a passion for the draft and put all of your time into it then you could do a better job than Cassserly/RS did. This ain't brain surgery
Mayock was the draft guru. Did you see what happened when his career depended on it? All them picks they got for Mack and Cooper and what did it yield?

The Raiders are my other team, the scuttle butt regarding Mayock was that Gruden had ALOT of say in who they drafted. The Raiders have been the anti Texans with regard to the draft, not great in the first round but pretty good in the later rounds.

I haven’t been impressed with Mills this season and I was really hoping he’d take a big step forward this season. Having said that, I also have NOT been impressed with Pep so far. Maybe Pep is best suited as a QB coach and the pressure of designing an offense and calling plays is too much. We’ve seen this before where great OC/DCs get an opportunity as a HC and the pressure of the step up is too much for them

Most definitely, I don’t think anyone is disputing that known fact. But teams have built successful teams with top notch quarterbacks too. The Texans just can’t get it done either way. That’s why most of us hope Caserio do. So far he’s been pretty good drafting.
Well, to Caserio’s credit and I think this is something to be positive about, he is building what looks to be a good O-line especially with the Kenyon Green pick. Then on the other side it looks like Pitre and Stingley he may have hit on. So like you said he has been solid at drafting. It might take two more draft classes though.

Yeah. Pep’s playcalling has left much to be desired. Pierce gets going, then they start calling passes. Or, they call deep passes on 3rd and 1.

QBs with good teams around them lol

2017 Eagles won with a backup QB.

2008 Giants, 5th best defense, two 1,000 yard Rushers in Derrick Ward and Brandon Jacobs (yes I’m calling Eli an average QB, he threw 21 TDs this year lol)

2011 Giants, 12th best defense, 1,000 yard Ahmad Bradshaw, and a very solid receiving group with headlined by Victor Cruz, and they still went 9-7 in the regular season in part because Eli threw 15 interceptions.

2012 Ravens, Ray Rice on O, Ray Lewis on D, Ed Reed, etc. Again, Flacco was an average QB

Hell, even Brady generally had great defenses around him. A good Oline. A built team.

Go back further, 2002 Bucs had a hall of fame defense and won with Brad Johnson at QB. a built team.

2000 Ravens, with Trent Dilfer.

People can get upset but IDC. Aikman has three rings because he played with Smith and Irvin and had a TEAM. However, Aikman was average I mean his numbers are not great.

The Giants did not have the 5th best defense in Eli's first SB.
They were 17th in points allowed and 7th in yards allowed.

Eli threw for 6 TDs against just 1 Int in the playoffs.
Yes, the Giants caught lightning in a bottle that year.
I blame that one on Vegas. :)

On his 2nd SB win, Eli was much better.
He was 5th in yards passing and 6th in TDs.
The Giants offense was 9th in scoring and 8th in yard gained (that means Eli was responsible more for the offense).
In the meantime, the D ranked 25th in points allowed and 27th in yards allowed.

Also, during the playoffs, Eli threw for 9TDs vs. 1 Int.

There's nothing average about that season for him.

Sure, Flacco was down right average during the year, but he had one of the greatest playoff runs any QB ever had.
A ton of yards with 11TDs vs ZERO Int.

The Eagles had great QB play from not just one, but two QBs.

They combined to lead the league in TD passes.

And then Foles took it right into the playoffs.
He averaged more than 300 yards per game and totaled 6TDs vs 1 Int.

There's nothing average about QB play for the Eagles that year.

Gruden was running that show.

I'n telling you that you could do a better job, although I would probably disagree with your philosophy. I believe you look at draft classes in 2 yr windows and make your selections accordingly. In other words you dont reach for a QB this yr if next yrs QB class is better in your estimation.

So Mayock came out the booth as a tv guru to give up his strong points to gruden? In my opinion, Gruden had player types in mind, Mayock found those players, and Gruden probably made the choice. Just like i keep saying about smith and bob. If you draft a player the coach doesn't care for, they're not going to play them. No way Smith drafts pretty much any of those lineman they drafted especially with his dna of west coast offense.

He was, but you don remember the previous 3 years when he was throwing for 50 tds right after Tebow took the team to the playoffs right. He chose Denver because they did have a ready made team, but circumstances forced him off the roster in Indy.

From what I've heard Gruden made the final calls on personnel.

It's not a hard job if a GM understands economics/finances and can look at talent after his scouts find the guys they like that fits the teams system. Then watches film of those 100-120 players religiously. Finds out who the GM likes and has background and medical investigations done on the guys he wants.

Finances come in when you want to re-sign your guys or sign FA's. Again a lot of film needs to be watched before those commitments are made.

Wait a minute. We might be giving Caserio too much credit. They drafted Edelman who had three 1000 yard seasons in 11 years. Wes Welker was in his 4th year when they traded for him and they signed Danny Amendola as a FA.

I might have missed someone. Who else did he draft as a slot WR?

Hadn’t realised they traded for Welker. Am I right in thinking that beats their outside WR drafting during the period by some distance though?

Pierce was a home run pick. Team needs too much talent elsewhere to go QB this next draft. Mills had some misses, though Green completely let Mills get hit that last red zone drive. Team is figuring out what their weaknesses and needs are so, they are in the games. Need to figure out how to win.

Pep, saw some good things, and again saw some bad.

If Pierce and Green is all they got right in the 2022 offseason (including all the coaching changes), I'd say they should be looking for a new General Manager before anything else. Apparently, according to some of the people on this board the entire team is suspect, including (and they have called him out by name) Pitre. I haven't seen much of the team this year, so I have to defer to those who have seen them and it looks like (judging by a large contingency, especially those who seem to think Mills is only a small part of the problem, if he's even a problem) the Texans need to start completely over. Build the team around Mills, I guess.

I’m more confident in Pitre than Stingley. But, they will both take some lumps this year Pitre needs to wrap up better but the talent is there.
