Preseason Gm 2: the Rams

Keep it Movin!
? I suppose I could ask you and others why all the pie in the sky based on two preseason games.
I see Driskel and even Allen acting like NFL quarterbacks. Sure they're playing with backups but they're also playing against backups. Of course majority of our offense was out but that has nothing to do with evaluating meals regardless of who he's playing against. He needs to play better than he has. Certainly Scharping gave up a play but the guys on the line have given Davis Mills much better protection than I thought they would. He has had time to hit his targets. Collins and Moore are not new.

I give props when I see good play but have no fear of giving criticism when I do not. If he plays better I'll certainly speak on it. If I was watching Mills in a backyard game I wouldn't go oh it's okay just back yard game. He's not my son. He's an NFL player.
He's only been pressured on 9% of his passes which is 41st out of the 44qbs in preseason. Ypa is in the 40 also during preseason. He needs to push the ball more because he has the time. Most of thos throws Saturday were off target. The play to Dorsett play was a good throw and great catch, same with the Collins play. If this team consistently goes 3 and out offensively, they're gonna be in trouble

Not enough field time to compare the 2 at this time. AJ had 7 more CFB games and 8 more year 1 starts with the Texans. I’d like to see NC get another NFL season to see how he continues to develop. Collins has the tools to be pretty special so I’ll enjoy watching the development process.
Your right he has all the tools. Can he put it together?

To the points being made by @leebigeztx and @badboy. I caught a couple of minutes of the 610 show with Stoerner and Hughley. Stoerner likes Mills and is rooting for him. However, after watching practice today, he is starting to get concerned about Mills pushing the ball and his accuracy downfield. During practice, he had open receivers on a couple of routes and he either underthrew the WRs or threw the ball out of bounds.

On similar plays, he said Kyle Allen made the completions and looked better than Mills today. The concern they have is not only is he not pushing the ball, but he seems to hesitate like he's indecisive or not confident with what he's seeing. Take it for what it's worth.

I guess we will know when we know.

To clarify if you have listened to Clint Sterner for any length of time you will know that he has voiced this concern about Davis Mills pushing the ball down field for long time including last season.

I didn't know that. I randomly catch 5-10 minutes of his show. To make sure I didn't butcher what he said, I went back and listened again. If anyone is interested, it starts at the 4:44 PM mark.

Odd, Lovie was talked to before practice the other day and told 2 podcasts that Mills is very good at pushing the ball down field. Also, stated that the team was not really showing much right now on either side of the ball. This was backed up by multiple players saying that the offense in particular was not showing even 1/2 the play book. Mills was also not being allowed to play to his abilities (except in practice)

What dropped ball?
First series Mills threw the ball well. 3-3

Second series 0-1, bad pass or miscommunication between receiver and quarterback.

Third series he went 1-2. Defender did his job and got his hand in there to knock the ball down.

Fourth series he went 1-3, The pass to Moore was too high but he got both hands on it. That’s the drop Opt was probably referring to. He probably heard the footsteps coming and made a business decision. The pass to Collins was terrible and should’ve been picked off. Looks to be another miscommunication.

Fifth series 1-1 pass to Burkhead who ended up fumbling.

Sixth series 3-6
Collins slipped out his break.
Bad pass to Moore. Moore saved it from being picked off.
Camp has to locate the ball. But Mills has to do a better job with his placement there.
Good pass to Dorsett and even better job taking the hit and getting both feet down.
Another great pass, jump ball to your 6’5 receiver.

Going back over the game and I don’t understand the big fuss. He wasn’t that bad.

Do you know what illness he's getting over?
I don't think it was an illness, but the concussion protocol he had to get past. Evidently, he'll get some field time on Friday. By the way, one of the guys working here in France is former Notre Dame OL, Steve Elmer. He was a top tier OL who decided to hang it up and focus on a new career. Talking with him over dinner, he stated he's never missed playing football or regretted his decision b/c he was just happy to have left the field with his mental faculties in tact. He had stories of being rushed back on the field far too soon after getting his bell rung or suffering what could've been a concussion. So, to some degree....I'd like to see Green healthy and ready to go, instead of being rushed.

Reading about getting your bell rung, suffering a concussion, or discussing on a forum is one thing.....getting a face to face perspective directly from a former player is pretty eye-opening.

Coaches use to give us a whiff of this smelly stuff and told us to get back out there. I remember getting a concussion in both middle school and high school. Both times I played the entire game after sniffing that smelly stuff.
