Sexual Assault Suits Against Watson

Tony Buzbee: NFL “doesn’t care” about sexual assault
Posted by Mike Florio on August 18, 2022, 5:25 PM EDT

Attorney Tony Buzbee brought 24 lawsuits against Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, settling all but one of them. Buzbee is not happy that the NFL settled its disciplinary action against Watson.

“By settling this matter the way he has,” Buzbee said in a statement, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, “Roger Goodell has proven one of two things: either his recent rhetoric was utter baloney, or his bark is much worse than his bite. My belief is that he is nothing more than a paper tiger. The message today to all victims is clear, if you believe you have been sexually assaulted by a powerful person, keep your mouth shut and go away. The NFL has certainly demonstrated that its ownership and the organization don’t care.

“To all sexual assault survivors, do not allow this recent ‘punishment’ to deter you. Keep speaking up and speaking out. Your voice matters. You are making a difference. We stand with you.”

The NFL agreed to suspend Watson 11 games, with a fine of $5 million. The league had the power under the Collective Bargaining Agreement and the Personal Conduct Policy to impose a much higher suspension and/or fine. The league, however, either wanted it to be over or hoped to avoid a federal lawsuit challenging the punishment.

************************************************************************************

Comments critical of Buzbee settling all but one known cases, and several unknown cases, are probably not entirely legitimate since this is what was evidently to the advantage of his clients.

BUT

Something I have not yet heard is the criticism I have of Buzbee, which is the timing of the settlements...........just prior to the judge's deliberation and an NFL ruling to come down.............something that no doubt played into consideration for a considerably lesser punishment. The settlements would still no doubt have been there following the final assessment of punishment. Buzbee had to have known what his actions would have on the Watson decision.

Actually the military pays for the flyovers. They basically are just another NFL sponsor. Pilots are required to log regular flight hours anyway, so it kills two birds with one stone.
That’s exactly what I thought but wasn’t sure. Kinda screwed up because you’d think it would be the other way around.

All the sources were wrong. They were guessing and theorizing like everyone not in the nfl offices. That's not to say in the future they won't be right, but they missed it like the message board people. Hell, Florio was about as right as I've ever seen him.

The worst part of all of this is that the suspension was determined based on what the best ratings would be upon Watson's return. So much for looking out for women. Nope, make sure he's back for the Texans game. Think of the ratings!

Where's my proof they did this intentionally? I don't need any. It's on them to go out of their way to avoid any suspicion of the accusation. Instead, they come back with a wonky # of games suspended (11) to get the Texans on the schedule and didn't even try to hide what they were up to.

He dared challenge the NFL's faux patriotism for his beliefs and was permanently punished for it. The NFL pays a lot for those military flyovers before games! And the amount of tribute jerseys and camo gear with team logos on it is BIG BUSINESS.

Watson, on the other hand, is just another perv, and let's face it, probably half the owner are, too.

Man, that game left a mark on my brain! :joker:

They never did except to sell pink gear in October and sell posters of sexy cheerleaders in short shorts. lol

I think the short attention span of the general public will be way beyond this by game 12. Look, a squirrel!
It wouldn't surprise me if the Breast Cancer people pay for the recognition of breast cancer awareness. The nfl is is all about money, plain and simple.

The flight hours are budgeted regardless.. The NFL should pay for the spectacle, but they don't. The Armed services also use it as a recruitment tool (which they also have a budget allowment for). It's no different than paying for a TV ad for them. I do believe the NFL picks up traveling expenses for the color guard you see at games, but that's about it.

That's why I always took any inside info that was posted here with a grain of salt. Keeping a level head. Not that I thought you or other people that are in some way connected in the league were telling us lies, I'm sure the information was passed on as it was received. It's just that in a case like this, with legal aspects, people play guess games or broken telephone sometimes.

So the government pays nfl millions and they pick up travel expense? A recruitment tool? I don't think anyone watched a fly over and at that time decides to go enlist. The nfl is Gotti of sports leagues except they don't want the smoke. They didn't want those documents of the settlement with the cowboy cheerleaders exposed federally. Neither did they want the mess of snyder and who knows what other settlements among owners we don't know about.

Not what most fans would believe.....................

From an older SI article.:

And yet, as with most things NFL, all that glitters is not gold. Though the league continues to urge fans to buy pink merchandise, thereby guiding proceeds to an objectively good cause, it’s been widely reported that only a sliver of what the NFL earns on pink gear actually goes to cancer research:
According to data obtained from the NFL by Darren Rovell of ESPN, the NFL “takes a 25% royalty from the wholesale price (1/2 retail), [and] donates 90% of royalty to American Cancer Society.”
In other words, for every $100 in pink merchandise sold, $12.50 goes to the NFL. Of that, $11.25 goes to the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the NFL keeps the rest. The remaining money is then divided up by the company that makes the merchandise (37.5%) and the company that sells the merchandise (50.0%), which is often the NFL and the individual teams.
Then consider that only 71.2% of money the ACS receives goes towards research and cancer programs. After everyone has taken their cut, only 8.01% of money spent on pink NFL merchandise is actually going towards cancer research (emphasis mine).

Solis is not still pending, she was one of the cases that settled.
Thanks for clarifying as I thought corrosion had said that Solis [who was the first female accuser] case was still pending against Deshaun. I will try to research and find whoever stated that. Also I could be wrong about the name.

The name won't be found yet. The court filings have not shown any of the last 4 suits filed as officially dismissed. Until the 3 that supposedly were going to be dismissed are filed with the court, the remaining active lawsuit cannot be identified.

Thanks for the clarification. At the end of the day, the NFL is a business and not a soup kitchen. They put on the face and I'm sure there are other avenues in which they donate. I wouldn't except you to give free surgeries no more than I move freight for free. This whole thing been jacked up from the beginning honestly. Once they got into the settlement part, it got even more weird. When the news came out about Watson willing to take 8 games and 5m fine, I knew something was up. I, like most didn't know , but knew something. The whole negotiating after Sue Robinson sounded odd.

Yep, no lies detected.

Yep, when the schedulers put the Browns to open up against Baker week 1, people wrote it off as a coincidence (as did I). This crap (isn't even a round # of games, which almost never happens) that has him back just in time for the game against Houston...
🤔 WWE doesn't even write this ****. 11 games isn't even what they offered in the original settlement?

If it makes anyone feel better remember he is now going to play in one of the toughest, meanest divisions in the league. He went from playing the Drags and Tits multiple times to playing the Ravens and Steelers. Two teams that traditionally have had violent defenses that love hurting Browns QBs. Steelers in particular are motivated because they had to listen to Browns heckle Big Ben about his misdeeds for 10+ years.

Texans have been bad no question but Watson has never played in a division where all 3 other teams are real contenders and in the hunt. The AFCS has every year only had one team that actually might have a chance, which team changes year to year, and the rest were bottom feeders.

As @Earl34 said outside of Cleveland, and judging by their forums even some parts of Cleveland, he is a pariah and will always have this hanging over his head no matter what he achieves on the field.

There remains one lawsuit so I got name wrong. I wonder how that case will impact the NFL's compromise? Or if any other women decide what the heck and file a civil suit. I would think Goodell and his attorneys would have thought of that.

Ironic you should mention WWE, and no not because of the Vince deal, because people forget that the NFL is registered under the same group as WWE as sports entertainment. This means if they want they can legally fix games or control things like the WWE does. It has long been the primary source behind the belief that the NFL is rigged.

This does have all the hallmarks of a wrestlers attacking a ref and being placed on suspension and get to return just in time for the pay per view doesn’t it.

Over the years, I could have probably retired on the charity surgeries I have performed. I have no doubt the NFL could afford much more charitable donations. Theirs would be entirely written off. My surgeries are not. The NFL puts virtually nothing back into the pot that they are not forced to.

Technically they don't pay them millions, it's money already spent. It's more of a convenient agreement. NFL has eyes/exposure, those pilots and jets have to fly regardless whether they fly over stadiums or not. Just to lift them off the ground cost a lot of money.

Also it is a amazing recruitment tool. That's the entire reason why the Navy even does air shows.. it may not work for everyone or even you, but if it didn't work in their recruitment they wouldn't do it.

The roof is never open here, we play in basically zero big games.. we're not seeing flyovers here, but they do their work.

So if I'm reading it correctly the net profit to the NFL is not enough they actually get another more or less 1% on top of the net profit.

Looks like there was some negotiation going on that was insisted could not be going on while the New Jersey attorney general made his decision.

I still am working on my anger and disgust over this but hopefully I'm going to stop posting in this thread and concentrate on a less controversial subject of Davis Mills being our future.

Hey man...

I remember you. Yeah, you booked my sister for a massage. Bet you thought I forgot about your nastyaz

I've been saying the NFL has been rigged for yrs. People are starting to see the light.

The fact that some of these older players who played before the huge contracts and TV money are struggling with health issues and they basically have to beg the NFL for healthcare tells you all you need to know about charitable nature of the NFL.

It doesn't matter except for your roster. Baker and the Browns skulldrug the Steelers in 2020 at Hines field or whatever they call it. The Browns like it or not have a top 10 roster in the entire nfl. Even with Watson missing 11 games, with a similar roster, Brissett was almost .500 with the Colts a few years back. The best thing to do as Texans fans is hope Caserio knock it out of the park with those extra 1st rd picks.

2020 was a long time ago in the NFL and the Browns have had a top 10 roster on paper for several years now and it’s gotten them no where. Also “with a similar roster, Brissett was almost .500” so you are saying with a top roster Brissett almost didn’t have a losing season? In a weak division like the AFCS? I’m not sure what argument you are trying to make here.

Do agree we can only hope Caserio hits it out of the park but then that’s what every team hopes their GM does so nothing new there.

Its not rigged, but they know how to build up anticipation amongst viewers. There is no way you could get everyone involved to stay quiet and be on the same page about anything.

You don’t have to get everyone involved just the right people at the right time. I did find it odd that Rams had zero fan base in LA but the NFL was desperate to turn that city into a duel team market like NY so all of a sudden as soon as they move to LA they are Super Bowl champions? What amazedly good timing for the NFL.

Like I said you don’t have to rig everything, even WWE doesn’t do that, you just have to know what ending you want and move the right piece at the right time to get there.

Anyone familiar with any "rehab" knows that there can be no success with deniability of wrong doing going into it, and don't feel you need to be there to begin with. You don't just miraculously "learn" accountability in rehab..........for someone llke Watson, you just learn "how to play the game" that much better by the time you get out.

Good job, NFL!
Or they don't let you complete. In that case his suspension would be longer wouldn't it?
